This course is primarily concerned with the application of international law in the context of the protection of human rights and the development of democracy with special reference to cases in Asia. Bearing in mind that any type of law, including international law, can only effectively function and be genuinely meaningful insofar as it can be applied to real cases for constructive resolution, this course will consider areas such as human rights and democracy against the backdrop of Asia. For this purpose, this course will examine the international legal foundations for human rights and democracy upon which difficult and complex cases in Asia will be seriously investigated. In particular, this course will focus on important current issues of international law in North Korea, South Korea, Japan and China. Through this course, students will have unique opportunities to broaden their academic horizons in the field of international law by examining and understanding how it can be practically presented and effectively applied in terms of resolving difficult problems.
