Appendix 5—Consultancy services

Summary of the department’s policy on the selection and engagement of consultants

Selection and engagement of consultants is undertaken in line with the Commonwealth Procurement Guidelines (December 2008).

Selection procedures include an evaluation of the technical merits of proposals received, to assess whether a proposal will achieve value for money.

The main categories of purposes for which consultants were engaged were environmental research, risk assessment and recommendations on the treatment of specific proposals, analysis for input to policy development, and reviews and recommendations on the effectiveness of government programs.
