This project is part of an international multicentre trial evaluating the postmarketing safety of the MRI contrast agent Gadovist.

2008–

MRI Contrast Agent Safety Study

Prospective non-randomized (pharmacoepidemiologic) cohort study (open-label, multicenter) to assess the magnitude of potential risk with the administration of Primovist® in patients with moderate to severe renal impairment for the development of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) based on diagnostically specific clinical and histopathologic information

Radiology, Westmead Hospital, Australia

This project is part of an international multicentre trial evaluating the postmarketing safety of the MRI contrast agent Primovist

2008–2010

Segmentation, structural modelling and simulation of the aorta and liver for clinical decision-making and treatment planning

Diagnostic Radiology, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, School of Computing, National University of Singapore and Institute for Infocomms Research, Singapore

This project aims to develop practical automated methods for computerised segmentation of the liver and aorta for interventional and surgical planning, using CT datasets

2004-2009

Nanoparticle-based Imaging Agents for MRI

Diagnostic Radiology, National University of Singapore

The project is directed at development, characterization and use of paramagnetic and superparamagnetic PLGA-encapsulated nanoparticles for in vivo imaging of cells, tissues and organs

2004-2008

Advanced Medical Image Segmentation and Quantitation

Diagnostic Radiology, National University of Singapore

Collaborators: Ashraf Kassim, Electrical and Computer Engineering & Leow Wee Keng, School of Computing, National University of Singapore

This project is aimed at the development of automated software tools for segmentation and volumetric quantitation of medical imaging 3D datasets in order to monitor disease and therapy and to assist with surgical planning more accurately than is possible with routine cross-sectional imaging

2003-2006

Biological Aggression of DCIS

Diagnostic Radiology, National University of Singapore

The project aimed to develop a library of MR spectroscopy spectra from a variety of needle biopsy samples from women with both benign and malignant breast lesions. A subset of 30 women with DCIS with be fully studied to evaluate for markers of biological aggression using contrast-enhanced breast MRI, MR spectroscopy of the DCIS specimens, histological evaluation of angiogenesis and gene expression analysis for various angiogenic factors.

2003-2008

Asian Bone Age Atlas.

Diagnostic Radiology, National University of Singapore

The project aims to x-ray 2000+ children of both sexes and three Asian races from the ages of 5 to 18 in order to develop a new comprehensive bone age atlas of Asian children.

2003-2006

Nonrigid Registration of Contrast-enhanced MR Mammography

Diagnostic Radiology, National University of Singapore

Electrical & Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore

This project developed a novel optimized rapid 3D nonrigid registration algorithm for improved registration of breast MR images. A patent application has been submitted and the initial paper submitted for publication.

1999-2000

Pseudo-DVT: Non-thrombotic Causes of the Swollen and/or Painful Calf

Department of Diagnostic Imaging, National University Hospital

Prospective study of the range of findings detected on specific musculoskeletal ultrasound examination of the calf in patients who present for Duplex Doppler study to exclude deep vein thrombosis of the lower limb.

1995-1997

The Effects of Total Biliary Obstruction in Guinea Pigs on the Hepatic uptake of Gd-DTPA, a New Organ-Specific MRI Contrast Agent

Radiology Department, Royal North Shore Hospital

Assessment of the normal characteristics of contrast enhancement with a new liver-specific MRI agent in normal guinea pigs and guinea pigs that have acute and chronic total bile duct occlusion.

1994-1997

Evaluation of the Accuracy, Efficacy and Impact of Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced MRI of the Breast on the Pre-operative Assessment of Breast Pathology

Radiology Department, Royal North Shore Hospital

Investigation of the utility of contrast enhanced MRI of the breast for pre-operative intramammary staging of breast carcinoma and pre-operative assessment of indeterminate breast disease.

1988-1995

Determination of tissue gadolinium concentration from MRI image intensity values.

Contrast Media Lab, Dept. Of Radiology, University of California San Francisco

I performed this work initially at the Radiologic Imaging Laboratory and the Contrast Media Laboratory at UCSF in San Francisco. Using X-ray fluorescence analysis to determine tissue gadolinium concentrations, an effort to quantify the relationship between tissue signal intensity and [Gd] was made.

On my return to Australia, I worked with a group investigating the in vitro and in vivo relaxivity of various Gadolinium-based MR contrast agents.

1988

Experiments with newly synthesized paramagnetic MRI contrast media.

Contrast Media Laboratory, University of California, San Francisco.

  1. Utility of various macromolecular MR agents for the visualization of tissue blood volume, vascular mapping and possibly perfusion in normals and pathology such as ischemia and neoplasm;

  2. Assessment of field-dependent changes in image intensity and contrast with MR contrast agents;

  3. Investigation of an iron-based hepatobiliary MR contrast agents

  4. Investigation of a new low-osmolar Gd-DTPA derivative for MR imaging of normal and pathologic tissues.

1987

MR imaging characteristics of a rabbit brain abscess model with Gd-DTPA.

Department of Radiology, Royal North Shore Hospital

This study involved the implantation and serial imaging of intracerebral bacterial abscesses to determine the efficacy of contrast enhancement with Gd-DTPA for assessing abscess size and progress, as well as meningeal and adjacent brain involvement.

1979

Cyclosporin-A: Some aspects of clinical usage and stability in human biological samples as determined by assay using high pressure liquid chromatography.

Renal Unit, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, NSW Australia

Supervisor: Dr. G. Duggin.

This work was performed as a final year Medical student. It involved refinement of the Sandoz assay for the then-new immunosuppressive agent, Cyclosporin-A. This was then applied to study the drug's stability in human plasma.

1977

Thesis for Bachelor of Science (Medical):

Dept. of Anatomy, University of Sydney, Sydney, NSW Australia.

Supervisor: Dr. M. Girgis

Thesis Title: “A Stereotaxic Atlas of the Rabbit Brain and Some studies on Its Cholinergic Activity”

A new anatomical atlas of the rabbit brain using gelatin-embedded cryomicrotomy was devised. Experiments performed on rabbits using stereotactic placement of cerebral electrodes, neurochemical and electrical stimulation of the temporal lobe (particularly the basal amygdaloid nucleus) and histochemical distribution of acetylcholinesterase within the telencephalon. This remains the latest atlas of this type
