Feature point location coding:

    • Objectives: to improve efficiency of the compression for feature point locations.

    • CE conditions:

      • Usage of TM;

      • Input data: unquantized feature locations and their matchings;

      • Pairwise matching on all the data categories.

      • TP, FP, nbits/sample, and localization on 1a for all operating points (to be further discussed).

During the planning of the CEs, some participants raised the issue that architectural implications of certain descriptors, such as amount of memory required, should be carefully taken into consideration. This could be clarified in that it was emphasized that the main purpose of a CE would be to thoroughly investigate how algorithms or certain parts of an algorithm perform, and to set constraints on size, speed, memory, etc. where necessary. In terms of the memory requirement, the issue was identified to be viewed differently by software-oriented and hardware-oriented implementers. It was again emphasized that a standardized definition should support as many implementation architectures as possible, and if necessary, compromises should be made to achieve this.

Discussion was held regarding the availability of source code. Whereas it is clear that anything implemented in the test model is to be made available by a source code implementation, no consensus was reached to establish such a practice in these CEs. The video subgroup issued a resolution expressing that the availability of source code among participants in the CDVS CEs would be beneficial for the investigation of technology and is therefore highly encouraged.
One contribution was received on a potential licensing problem (M23564). This would affect the local feature descriptor currently in the test model, as well as various alternatives that have been proposed or are being investigated. The seriousness of the IPR issue, as well as the feature extraction process, requires further investigation by the ISO authorities. However, the group is aware of the problem and is prepared to also look for potential alternatives if necessary.
It was suggested that CDVS should become a self-contained standard rather than being included within ISO/IEC 15938-3. Therefore, a request for subdivision for MPEG-7 part 13 was issued.
An AHG was appointed (N12756, as recorded in N12629) to conduct further work until the 101st meeting.
