4.3CE3: Chroma interpolation filter

4.3.1Summary

4.3.1.1.1.1.1.1.1JCTVC-H0033 CE3: Summary of Core Experiment on Chroma Interpolation Filter [T. Chujoh, E. Alshina]

In this CE report, test results of interpolation filters for chroma are reported. One proposal (JCTVC-H0494) had been registered in CE3 and two half-pel interpolation filters had been evaluated using the common conditions (with cross-verification).

Related non-CE contributions were noted to include JCTVC-H0180, JCTVC-H0610, JCTVC-H0569, JCTVC-H0207, and JCTVC-H0304 (which was not available).

The current half-pel chroma filter of HM5.0 is {-4, 36, 36, -4}. CE3 tested the following two filters in comparison to HM5.0.

  • Variant A: {-7, 39, 39, -7}

  • Variant B: {-5, 37, 37, -5}

Both variant A and B have a wider pass-band than the current half-pel chroma filter.

Variant A has wider pass-band than variant B.

The following comments had been concluded at this moment.

  • Variant A with 0.1% gain and variant B with 0.2% gain for chroma on average had been tested.

  • Both variants provide no performance change in terms of Luma BD bit rate.

  • In several sequences on LC-LP when SAO is off, variant A causes loss of coding efficiency; however they are improved if SAO is on.

  • Regarding subjective quality assessment, the differences between the proposals and anchor are negligible or very small.

When SAO is on and ALF is off, there was more gain. However, it was noted that there were also some cases with loss when SAO is off – e.g. a BQSquare case.

No action taken.
