2MPEG-DASH

The Systems subgroup runs core experiments extending the scope of DASH. Delivering DASH over protocols other than http as well as hybrid delivery are considered. Requirements and use cases need to be updated.

3MPEG-H

MPEG-H will be the new umbrella for the High Efficiency Video Coding and the related Systems and Audio standards. The vision for MPEG-H was defined at the 99th meeting in N12312 Context and Objectives of MPEG-H.
MPEG foresees the initial standards of MPEG-H to include video coding (HEVC), advanced 3D audio coding and MPEG Media Transport. The Definition of graphics and user interfaces will come later.
3.1MPEG-H Part 2: HEVC

Still Picture Coding

HEVC-Intra coding might be useful as the Advanced Image Coder that JPEG requires. The capabilities of HEVC-Intra coding were discussed. In order to better understand HEVC capabilities, JPEG requirements and potential extensions to HEVC in order to cater to JPEG requirements (bit depth, meta data, formats), the AdHoc group N13438 AHG on Still Picture Coding using HEVC was established. In N13424 Draft requirements for still image coding using HEVC requirements are captured. It is still too early to define a 10bit still image profile within HEVC. JPEG was informed and invited to join this activity N13430 Liaison statement to WG1 on HEVC Still Picture Coding.

Profiles

Discussions on Multiview and related profiles concluded in defining just one profile which supports display of stereo formats. Compared to HEVC monocular video, only high-level syntax changes are required.

A 10bit profile is to be defined later.
Interlace

At this point, HEVC is capable of coding interlaced material. SEI-messages allow for signalling of interlaced material. Experiments show that the coding gains compared to AVC can be further enhanced for some sequences. Before arriving at any conclusion, further optimization of the HEVC encoder for interlaced material is required. Work continues in the N13437 AHG on Study of interlace coding in HEVC. The requirements are provided in N13423 Requirements and Use Cases on Interlaced Video under Consideration. Liaison statements N13432 Liaison statement to ITU-R SG6 on HEVC Coding of Interlaced Video and N13431 Liaison statement to SCTE on HEVC Coding of Interlaced Video were sent.

Subjectively Lossless Screen Content Coding

Some companies search for an efficient way to transport the contents of a computer screen to a remote display. In order to keep the quality of the display, subjectively lossless coding is required. Some contributions show that bit rate savings of 50% should be possible for this application. N13436 AHG on Subjectively Lossless Screen Content Coding is charged with gathering test material and evidence.

3.2MPEG-H Part 3: 3D Audio

The work area for the audio group are coding of channel-based and object-based audio as well as coding of higher order ambisonics signals. A Call for Proposals with a return date prior to the 105th meeting was issued.

4Explorations

4.1User description

Adhoc group N13434 AHG on MPEG-UD looks into user description in order to broaden the participation and focus of this challenge. Especially for social networks, this will be a relevant activity. An ontology and schemas need to be standardized. Information for user description includes attributes, activities, interests, status, history, medical, etc. User Descriptions are used in MPEG-7, MPEG-21, MPEG-M, and MPEG-V.
Draft requirements and use cases like Scalable User Description, User-Customized Contents and User’s Emotions are available in N13425 Draft Requirements on MPEG User Descriptions and N13426 Draft Use Cases for MPEG User Description. There seems to be a need for dynamic user descriptions as well as User descriptions that are particularly suited for machines. A draft CfP N13427 Draft Call for Proposals on MPEG User Descriptions was prepared.
As in previous meetings, MPEG defined an updated architecture that shows the scope and interfaces of MPEG User descriptions (Figure 1). If requirements and use cases become sufficiently mature until the next meetings, a CfP might be issued at the 104th meeting.
