Low complexity video coding might be potentially relevant especially for mobile and UHDTV devices. Spatial random access is a functionality currently not provided by standardized solutions.
MPEG received two video sequences from fastVDO that are high-quality, high-bit depth and high-rate 4:4:4. Members are encouraged to provide further test material. Especially sequences with Bayer-like patterns are sought.
At this point, three companies are interested in this activity. At the 97th meeting, viewing of the sequences, anchors and evaluation of evidence that there is room for standardization given existing technology, is planned. A potential call is not expected in 2011. Evidence is expected at the 98th or 99th meeting the latest. Work is carried out within the adhoc group N12033 AHG on Low Complexity Video Coding.
