research of Interest: Ecofreindly Pest and Disease management and Bionanoparticles

My research centre is directed towards two areas of interest: 1) ecofriendly pest and disease management, and 2) synthesis, characterization of bioreduced nanoparticles and utilize for agricutlrure purpose. My primary research interests are in the interactions that occur between reduviid predators and their hosts.  I mastered all aspects of biological control strategies using Biopesticides, microbial agents, predators especially for lepidotperan, hemipteran and dipteran pests of economic importance. Specifically, I study the biochemistry of reduviid salivary venom and its biochemical, cellular impacts on their host insects.

For the past 30-years, my attention has been focused on five areas: 1) mass production strategy for reduviid predators with their natural as well as factitious hosts or developing suitable artificial diets, 2) chemical as well as molecular interaction of reduviids and their hosts, 3) acquisition of cold and heat tolerance in reduviid predators, particularly in relation to the influence of host species, 4) biochemical and molecular analysis of reduviid salivary venom and finding out their  mode of action of reduviid venoms, and 5) utility value of botanicals (terrestrial and marine weeds) and microbial pathogens (including their nanomaterials) and their silver and goald nanaomarterial for insect pests and phytopathogens.

A new direction for my research laboratory has been investigations of development of botanical (terrestrial as marine plants) formulations; record their efficacy, popularize them among farmers and bring them out to the market.  Presently, I am synthesizing silver nanomaterials, characterizing them and finding out their possible impacts on insect pests and phytopathogens.  My lab is aiming to minimize synthetic insecticides by incorporating botanical oils at different proportions.

Dr. Sahayaraj has operated thirteen research projects funded by national (DST, DBT, CSIR, MOEs, MEFs) and international (IFS) funding agencies. He has also received grants on several occasions for conducting farmers’ and students’ training programmes and international conference on Biopesticides and international travel grant from TWAS, CSIR, DST, TNSCST, MES, ICMR, ICAR and UGC. He has guided and supervised 19 Ph.D. scholars and supervising four researchers. He has been regularly transferring the laboratory finding to the neighborhood farmers and offering guidance to them on BIPM. For a better understanding and pursuance by farmers, he brought out 05 manuals/books in his regional language.
