Integrated AIDS Work




SWEAT

Distribution of female condom, empowerment of women (negotiating skills), building up self esteem, train nurses at public hospitals to the specific needs of CSW, combating stigmatisation, working on men’s responsibility (limited to truckers), legal literacy

The Black Sash

- Cooperation with clinics that follow up pregnant women (research on the link between social grants and HIV/AIDS) , facilitating access to social grants

- Activities not differentiated to the specific needs of women and men



Project Conflict Resolution and Development

- School survey addresses also rape and sexual harassment

- Intention to integrate lessons learned on HIV/AIDS education into the existing gender training manual (support of community based organisations)

Southern Cape Land Committee

- Strengthening of local women’s groups

- no specific link between gender and HIV/AIDS.

Jekesa Pfungwa

- Women support and women led organisation

- Women are encouraged to take up political leadership, building up self esteem and confidence to talk in community meetings



Mulanje hospital

- no apparent action.

- More women accessing VCT, ARV and support groups. No action taken to engage men.



ASHA

- HIV/AIDS education in maternal health programmes, women accessing VCT and HBC. Difficulties to reach out men and boys. Men’s awareness programme elaborated in 2004 to train men as care givers and counsellors.

INSA

- mostly female staff

- no specifc actions related to gender and HIV/AIDS
