JOPM (BERDO)

- JOPM as a programme integrated a gender mainstreaming strategy, pays attention to the collections of sex disaggregated data and by asking counterparts to involve beneficiaries of both sexes in their programmes

- BERDO: no specific action so far, but there is a sensitivity. They succeeded to engage a relatively high number of male HBC volunteers as compared to some AIDS service organisations!!.

NISAA

- Women organisations: awareness building of young people taking into account gender roles and addressing date rapes, empowerment of women (learn to say yes or no), delivery of PEP (through referrals to clinics), legal support, legal literacy, challenging men’s responsibilities for wife and family

Small enterprise Foundation

- the pilot project is specific on mainstreaming a gender awareness and HIV/AIDS education training component into the existing TCP program. The training curriculum is built around the link between gender based violence and HIV/AIDS. Subjects such as gender roles, domestic violence, HIV/AIDS prevention, condom negotiation and VCT are covered. Also leadership skills training for women.

NESA

Gender and HIV/AIDS are two of the 9 sectors NESA is working in. They also made the link between gender and HIV/AIDS. As they are a network, no information is available on the implementation by the member organisations.

APSA

- gender sensitivity: centre and services are open for girls and boys. Both are involved in the daily organisation of the centre, challenging the gender division of work

Remark: Gender was not discussed with the Plan India office because of the limited time spend at this office.
All counterparts responded in a rather classical way to the specific needs of women (and men). All counterparts do collect sex disaggregated data. All counterparts, offering HIV/AIDS related services, secure access of women to these services (such as information on HIV/AIDS, care and support), but are at the same time being confronted with the fact that men are underrepresented in the care and support systems (two organisation are challenging this bottleneck like BERDO and ASHA). Some of them invest in the strengthening of women’s organisations (SCLC, Jekesa Pfungwa, SEF, NESA). Four counterparts linked explicitly gender to HIV/AIDS: SWEAT, PCRD, NISAA and SEF (mostly focussing on gender based violence), all organisations based in South Africa.
