The tour to the area between the Orange and the Vaal lasted about three months. The work includes notes on the Bushmen, Corannas, Basutos, Bechuanas, Griquas and Zulus, amongst others; as well as chapters on botanical, geological, hunting and literary matters. Mendelssohn highlights the full account of the Zulu army, and the cruel treatment of the Bushmen by the Dutch settlers, which is severely condemned. See vol. 1, p. 49-50.

Fraenkel was the first Jewish medical practitioner recorded at the Cape, having trained in Europe. He was a founder of both the South African College (later the University of Cape Town) and the first Hebrew congregation in southern Africa in 1842.

Margaret, Lady Herschel, was the wife of Sir John Herschel, celebrated astronomer at the Cape. During his four year surveillance of the southern skies, she accompanied him on short trips away from the Cape and produced a series of elegant flower paintings and numerous letters to her relations.

Only named the "Heerengracht" in the middle of the 18th century, the link between Van Riebeeck's Castle and the Company's vegetable garden was the "walk" taken by the gentlemen of the Dutch East India Company whilst conducting their business and social activities, and the town was built along this route.

During the last decades of the 19th century, Paarl became the centre of the wagon making industry in South Africa. Two of the biggest firms were owned by "Ryk Koos" Retief and P.B. de Ville. In 1895 these two firms amalgamated. This was their first joint catalogue. Vehicles offered include various "Spiders", the Gent's Buggy, a Passengers' Cart, transport wagons, hearses, a travelling home & a street watering cart.

The Tower was completed in 1796 and is one of the earliest built in the British Empire. It was restored in the 1970s.
