m28880 JNB comments on Range Extensions of HEVC ISO/IEC 23008-2 [JNB of WG 11]

The following were requested:

• 
  Profiles / levels should be defined in DAM.
  
• 
  HEVC supports at least the same capability of the existing standards. (AVC supports up to 4:4:4 14 bit)
  
• 
  There are emerging video format superior to 14 bit, e.g. medical imaging. Considering such emerging technology, HEVC should also support such video format, e.g. 16 bit video.

For medical imaging, the following features were suggested to be necessary:

• 
  Up to 16 bit per component
  
• 
  4:0:0 monochrome coding support
  
• 
  All-intra coding and still picture support
  

16 bits needs technical work, although this seems agreed in principle. This needs further study and test sequence content. (See JCTVC-M0191 / m28644), more being actively sought.
