1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.40m36361 4x4 Blocksize Inter Prediction for Internet Video Coding [Jae-Yung Lee, Anna Yang, Jong-Ki Han, Jae-Gon Kim]

The block sizes of 16x16, 16x8, 8x16, and 8x8 are allowed in inter prediction in the ITM 12.0. 4x4 may be effective in inter prediction, especially in more complex regions. This document presents the implementation of 4x4 block-based inter predictive coding in ITM 12.0, which results in the extension of variable block sizes including 4x4, 8x4, and 4x8 for inter prediction. In the preliminary experimental results, no average bit saving over the anchor of ITM 12.0 was achieved, although some bit savings were obtained in some classes of test sequences.

BoG recommendation: Further improvement and refinement are necessary for obtaining overall coding gain for 4x4 inter predictive coding. Further study is needed, and no immediate action was taken.

In the previous MPEG meeting, a chroma enhancement technique was adopted as an encoding technique for the ITV test model (ITM) encoder. The previous method that changed the DC value of quantized coefficients increased the compression performance of the chroma components significantly, but decreased the performance of the luma component. Preventing coding loss on luma component, this contribution proposes a modified encoding technique that is applied only to intra predicted block.
