ā āndhradeśaparyanta_

A, B, C: kautakī...; L: kautaki

Cara_avyūhabhā_ya (Chaukhambha edn., p. 33): śā_khāyanī; Ayachit edn. (p. 47): sā_khyāyanī

A, B: ...sa_game; C: ...sa_gamai. C miscopies from A, where a descending lower part of from the line above can at first glance make one read sa_gamai. Cara_avyūhabhā_ya (Chaukhambha edn., p. 33): āndhrādidak_igneyī godā sāgara āvadhi

A, C: hyopastambī

Cara_avyūhabhā_ya (Chaukhambha edn., p. 34): yajurvedas tu taittirya āpastambī prati__hitā; Ayachit edn. (p. 47): yajurvedas taittirīya āpastambī prati__hitā

This reading from L agrees with the Cara_avyūhabhā_ya. However, all our mss read: sahyādi-parvatārambhān nair_tyā_ tu sāgarāt

Cara_avyūhabhā_ya (Chaukhambha edn., p. 34): c parśurāmasya sannidhau; also Ayachit edn. p. 48. The reading paraśurāmasya violates the meter, and the reading parśurāmasya probably represents the actual pronunciation.

Printed edn. reads: vyāptavāyavyadeśe tu. Both editions of the Cara_avyūhabhā_ya (Chaukhambha edn. p. 34, Ayachit edn., p. 48) read: vyāptā vāyavyadeśāt tu

Cara_avyūhabhā_ya (Chaukhambha edn. p. 34, Ayachit edn., p. 48) reads: ...kali_gaśca kānīno

L adds this verse. It is missing in our mss, though it is found in the Cara_avyūhabhā_ya and seems to be presupposed by the subsequent verse, as well as by the subsequent discussion in our text.

A, C: sarvadeve_u; B: sarvavede_u; L: sarvadeśe_u

A, C: ...saneyī...

Lele reads: kā__a... The ms reads kā_vasa_j–ateti. Cf. Cara_avyūhabhā_ya: kā_vasa–j–akā (Chaukhambha edn., p. 34), kā_vasa_j–akā (Ayachit edn. p. 48).

A, B, C: bahudhāyana...

A, B, C: ...rā_āyaya...; L: rā_āyanīya...

A, C: sapa__ito...; B: sa_pī_ito...; L: sa_pi__ito...

B: ...dinī iti padena

A, C: kā_vapi

A, B, C: anyad_ju; L: anyadyaju_. Lele leaves the phrase anyadyaju_ untranslated.

A, B, C: kautakī...; L: kautaki...

A, C: kautaki...; B: kautakī; L: kautaki...

A, B, C: tadāgneyādi...; L: tathāgneyādi...

A, B, C: ...nika_asthasamudra...; L: ...nika_asamudra...

A, C: hira_yakeśī...; B, L: hira_yakeśi...

A, B, C: ...vāyavī_ diśa_; L: ...vāyavyadiśa_

A, B, C: maitrāya...; L: maitrāyaya...

This sentence relates to verse 9 of the Mahār_ava passage quoted earlier. This makes it more likely that the verse was present in the original text, though it is missing in A, B, and C.

A, C: pravartateti

A, B, C: tadanyasyārthāmapi; B corrects to tadanyasyālpatvam api arthāt siddham; L: tadanyasyārthādalpatvamapi

A, B, C: śākhānāmapi; L: śākhānāmapīti

A, B, C: svasvaśākhā...; L: svaśākhā...

L: yathāśāstre; A, B, C: yathāśāstra_

A, C: śīk_aya eva

A, C: ...vāsastatacā__ālādi...

A, B, C: ...kalpādau; L: ...kalyā_ādau. Lele’s Marathi translation assumes kalpādau.

A, B, C: sarvayaju_sāmādi...; L: sarva_gyaju_sāmādi...

A, B, C: pratipadya etad ...; L: pratipadyata etad...

L: itīti

The italicized text is missing in L.

A, C: pra_avagatānām kārokāramakāra_ā_

A, C: p_vyakāra_

The original passage in the N_si_hapūrvatāpanīyopani_ad, 2, N_si_hottaratāpanīyopani_ad 3, actually goes further and speaks of the 4th half-mātrā and identifies it with the Atharvaveda. Our pandit, while ostensibly citing from an âtharva_a source, leaves out the reference to the Atharvaveda, and highlights only the three Vedas.

A, C: sarvā_i sarvā_i par_ā_

A, C: sa_t__eti

A, B, C: ...sad_śā_ / āvayavā_

L: pra_avādevakārasyaiva; A, B, C: pra_avāderakārasyaiva

A, B, C: _co ak_are parame vyoman samāsata iti

A, C: careti /

A, C: ...myomiccityetad...

A, C: adhini_adu_ / adhika...

B: ...sānatvamuktam

The N_si_hottaratāpanīyopani_ad, kha__as 3-4, contain a related discussion, though I have not found a passage with identical wording.

A, C: k__ī

A, B, C: dyamānā_; L: paridyamānā_

A: samyagavati te

Jābālopani_ad in the volume Upani_adā_ Samuccaha_ (p. 290) reads: ...dattātreya...

A, C: ityekāk_ara_ brahma gatim.

A, C: bhūtasyā

Cited in Śa_kara’s Bhā_ya on Brahmasūtra 1.1.3.

Cited in Śa_kara’s Bhā_ya on Brahmasūtra 1.1.4.

A, C: kar_akadvayena

A, B, C: ...śākhayā; L: śākhāyā

A, B, C: ...sapta...; L: ...samasta

A, B, C: ...śirasaśca; L: śirasa_. This passage seems to refers to the recitation of the Gāyatrī mantra preceded by the recitation of the seven Vyāh_tis and followed by the cited segment: bhū_ bhuva_ sva_ maha_ jana_ tapa_ satyam / tat savitur vare_ya_ bhargo devasya dhīmahi / dhiyo yo na_ pracodayāt // āpo jyotī raso ‘m_ta_ brahma bhūr bhuva_ svar // This mode of recitation is part of the performance of the ritual of Sandhyā.

A, C: ...svadhākāha_ta...

B: _ksāmavyatiriktānā_

A, C: prāśastaittirīya...

A, C: ...vedapek_atvāt

B: maitrāyanā_

L: somādarvāg... Here the term arvāk is equivalent of prāk, cf. the section titled prāk-soma in the Mānava-śrauta-sūtra. Beginning with the Soma sacrifice, the Taittirīyas do need mantras from other sources, but upto this sacrifice, they have a complete set of mantras in the TS. I would like to thank Dr. T.N. Dharmadhikari for his help in interpreting this passage.

L: sāmātharvavedinām

C: ...mantrabhāvāt

A, C: ...rāmnāta_ tathāpi

A, C: sāvināciketādicitayopi //

B: ...vākyānyānhikāni

A, C, L: pāk_ikāni; B: pāk_ikā_i

No repetition in B.

A, C: pāk_itva_

The term yāvajjīvaśruti refers to the passage yāvajjīva_ darśapūr_amāsābhyā_ yajeta. This passage is cited by Śabara on Mīmā_sāsūtra 2.4.1 as coming from the Bahv_ca-Brāhma_a, and is not traced to any extent text. D.V. Garge (1952, p. 125) says that Kumārila’s remarks on this passage (namely, bahv_cabrāhma_e ’dhvaryubrāhma_e vā śrūyate iti nātīvābhinive__avyam) indicate that he had no access to this Brāhma_a text. Ganga Nath Jha’s translation of the passage in Kumārila’s Tantra-vārttika (p. 890) reads: ÒThough the sentences in question are found both in the Bahv_ca-Brāhma_a and the Adhvaryu-Brāhma_a, yet the name of only one of these is mentioned in the Bhā_ya; but it does not matter in which particular Brāhma_a the sentence is found.Ó The original passage in Kumārila seems to say that the passage may be found in a _gvedic Brāhma_a or in a Yajurvedic Brāhma_a, but that should not be of any great concern. What matters to Kumārila is just the fact that this is a Vedic citation. Its specific source is of little concern to him. This kind of yāvajjīvaśruti for Darśapūr_amāsa is indeed assumed by the âpastambaśrautasūtra (3.14.8 and 3.14.10): svargakāmo darśapūr_amāsau, ... tābhyā_ yāvajjīva_ yajeta.

A, B, C: ārtavā_yapi; L: ārtavānyapi
