- m. 10/18/1802, Buffalo, Wash. Co., PA, Sarah McKibben STEWART - 33

- m. 10/21/1819, Mary "Polly" Parker (b. 5/5/1781) no children

William Stewart was born at Meeting House Springs, near Carlisle, in East Pennsboro twp., Cumberland Co., Pa. William, a blacksmith, followed his brothers , Benjamin and Galbraith, west to Washington Co, where he met Sarah McKibben at Buffalo, Pa. (HIR)

The family moved to Clarion Co. about 1808 and located about three miles west of Callensburg. A few years later he moved to the vicinity of Dutch Hill and located on what is now known as the Andrew Bowser farm (1912), where he remained until his death in 1825, age 46. He was a blacksmith by trade and tradition pictures him as a very large man of unususl physical strength. (Peter Snyder, 1912)

Sarah was the daughter of Thomas McKibben. Thomas McKibben came from Washington Co. about the same time as the Stewarts and was an early elder in the Concord Presbyterian church. (P. Snyder, 1912).

"I have heard the story of Mr. Stewart's death but cannot verify it. The story goes that he and Mrs. Stewart were making a trip on horseback, when not far from home he was taken so ill that they stopped and dismounted where he died under a tree somewhere near the top of Gates Hill." (P. Snyder, 1912)

William and both wives are buried in the lower cemetery at the Corcord Presbyterian church. Wm. Stewart's Bible was in the possession of Mrs. Lydia Slaugenhaupt, Sligo, PA, in 1968. A letter in that Bible reads: "This is to certify that the bearer, William Stuart is a member in full communion in the Church -- That Sarah Stuart his wife has enjoyed this privelege with him of Baptism for their children and that they are both free from Church censure or cause therefor know to us. Given at Buffalo April 8th. 1806. By order of Sexton. John Anderson"

This letter from Robert Stewart to his brother Galbraith tells of the death of William Stewart. James Anderson is the husband of Mary Stewart, their sister:
