Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is composed of three phosphates. The breaking of the bond between the second and third phosphates releases the energy that is used to power virtually all cellular processes in your body. ATP provides the energy needed for cell growth, immune system regulation, brain and neuron function, DNA repair, and hormone production. Amazingly, we all generate enough metabolic energy to produce our own body weight in ATP every day just to function! ATP is at the core of a healthy functioning cell because it is the source of energy for the cell. ATP to a cell is like gasoline to your car because it provides the energy the cell needs to work!
People commonly associate the word energy with caffeine, coffee, 5 Hour Energy®, and the long list of energy drinks. While caffeine is a stimulant to the body, true cellular energy comes from manufacturing more ATP and by creating more factories that make ATP in the first place.
There are mitochondria inside of all your cells. These mitochondria are the manufacturers of ATP. Elite athletes have been shown to have a lot more mitochondria than the average person. Conversely, sick people and those who are chronically inflamed at the cellular level have less mitochondria than the average person. Research has shown that low ATP production leads to an increase of inflammation. The more inflammation increases, the more the NO/ONOO cycle increases. This leads to an increase is NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate). The NO/ONOO cycle is an inflammation positive feedback loop that Martin Pall, a brilliant biochemist, discovered. In this complicated cycle, chronic inflammation is driven by toxins, infections, or stress of any kind. This stimulates nasty free radicals that can easily regenerate and spread, perpetuating a cycle that literally feeds itself. If this cycle is not controlled, the person becomes chronically sick with many unexplainable symptoms (like multiple chemical sensitivities) and nothing seems to be able to fix the problem.269
ATP is not only needed to shut off the NO/ONOO cycle and decrease inflammation, but is also needed to manufacture glutathione (a powerful antioxidant that works as a detoxifier). In fact, it takes 3 ATP to create 1 glutathione. Supporting the mitochondria increases the amount of energy your body can produce and therefore boosts your body’s ability to rebuild and maintain optimal health.

Disease: Chronic inflammation destroys eNRG by Systemic Formulas is a staple in any protocol. eNRG not only helps to increase the number of ATP produced by mitochondria (fuel for mitochondria), but it also supports mitochondrial biogenesis, which is a fancy way of saying that it increases the number of mitochondria. This means it helps the body to increase the number of ATP producing factories! A typical dose is 1 capsule twice a day with or without food (1 bottle contains 60 capsules, which is a 1 month supply).
I discuss mitochondrial health in this section about the brain because the brain contains the most mitochondria in the body (the liver and musculoskeletal system come in second and third).

There is a great herbal energetic formula called B (Brain) by Systemic Formulas. It improves thinking and memory because it's a neuron junction stimulator and also supplies the essential nutrients to help bridge the left and right hemispheres of the brain.
Curcumin is a powerful antioxidant that has been shown to decrease inflammation, and even has anti-cancer benefits. Curcumin is a great natural substitute for those of you who take ibuprofen for pain. I’m discussing this antioxidant in the brain section of this book because it crosses the bloodbrain barrier and research shows that it directly binds to amyloid plaque.272
However, you cannot rebuild your brain until you remove the source of the problems. Leaky gut, heavy metals like mercury and aluminum, and biotoxins like Lyme disease and mold are all major causes of brain disorders.
Avoid Soda Pop!
It’s now widely accepted that regular soda is bad for your health, but it’s unbelievable to me how many people still drink diet soda thinking that it is healthier for them. It’s not! Here are my main issues with both regular and diet soda:
• It has a pH of 2.5. Sodas are 50,000 times more acidic than neutral liquids. You would have to drink 30 glasses of clean water to balance out just ONE can of soda. Why is this important? All diseases (including cancer) thrive in acidic environments.
• Regular soda contains high fructose corn syrup. This highly processed sweetener significantly raises insulin levels and has been linked to diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome. Plus, the majority of high fructose corn syrup is derived from genetically modified corn. Most troubling, recent studies show that 50% of high fructose corn syrup contains mercury, which is the second most toxic substance on the planet.273
• Much of the soda pop that is consumed comes in an aluminum can. Aluminum is a heavy metal that has an affinity for brain tissue. I discussed the dangers of aluminum at length earlier in this book.
What Happens to Your Body Within an Hour of Drinking a Regular Coke®?
• Within the first 10 minutes, 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. This is 100 percent of your recommended daily intake, and the only reason you don’t vomit as a result of the overwhelming sweetness is because the phosphoric acid they add to it cuts the flavor.
• Within 20 minutes, your blood sugar spikes, and your liver responds to the resulting insulin burst by turning massive amounts of sugar into fat.
• Within 40 minutes, caffeine absorption is complete. Your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, and your liver dumps more sugar into your bloodstream.
• Around 45 minutes, your body increases dopamine production, which stimulates the pleasure centers of your brain. By the way, this is physically identical to the response people get from heroin.

All artificial sweeteners are just that - artificial. They are the result of a chemical process that produces dangerous neurotoxic compounds. Aspartame has been linked to brain tumors, headaches (including migraines), epileptic seizures, depression, and autoimmune diseases. Aspartame contains methanol, which converts to formaldehyde and formic acid when the temperature exceeds 86° Fahrenheit.274 The average person’s body temperature exceeds that! Yes, fruits and vegetables have methanol, but they also have a large amount of ethanol which neutralizes the methanol. Aspartame does not have any buffer.
Sucrolose (Splenda®) falls into the same category. While its manufacturer tells everyone that Splenda™ is made from sugar, they neglect to tell you they insert chlorine into the sugar molecule. Chlorine is a dangerous carcinogenic, cancer causing agent. As Dr. Joseph Mercola has said, “Chemically, Splenda® is actually more similar to DDT than sugar.”275
Sucrose is a disaccharide molecule that contains two single sugars bound together, i.e. glucose and fructose). Sucralose begins as a sugar molecule, but that's where its connection to natural sugar ends. In a five-step patented process, three chlorine molecules are added to the sucrose (sugar) molecule. This process converts the sugar molecule to a fructo-galactose molecule. This type of sugar molecule does not occur in nature, and therefore your body is not able to properly metabolize it. As a result of this “unique” biochemical make-up, its manufacturer claims that Splenda® is not digested or metabolized by the body, and therefore has no calories.
However, if you look at the research you will find that an average of 15% of sucralose is absorbed into your digestive system, and ultimately is stored in your body. Sucralose was first discovered in 1976 when scientists were attempting to create a pesticide and noticed it tasted sweet.276
Some health experts like JJ Virgin say that sucralose (Splenda®) feeds SIBO and bad bacteria in the digestive tract.277 This causes your body to extract more calories from food, store more fat, and is toxic to the thyroid. As of 2015, there are six “highintensity” sweeteners on the market.
Aspartame, sucralose, n e o t a m e , a c e s u l f a m e potassium, saccharin, and now the newest addition, advantame. Similar to aspartame, advantame contains phenylalanine and people who can’t metabolize phenylalanine should definitely stay away from this fake sweetener. As of today, advantame does not yet have a brand name so you must look at nutritional labels carefully.278 I recommend stevia, birchwood, xylitol, monk fruit (luo han guo), or erythritol.

Redox
In 1998, Robert F. Furchogott, Louis J. Ignarro, and Ferid Murad were awarded the Nobel prize for their discoveries concerning nitric oxide as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system. In 2001, a new journal emerged called Antioxidants and Redox Signaling (ARS). Since its inception there have been more than 11,000 studies on redox signaling in peer-reviewed scientific and medical journals.
Nobel laureate James D. Watson, Ph.D., stated that he regards redox “Among my most important work since the double helix.” Watson’s hypothesis is featured as the cover story in the U.S. print edition of The Lancet Journal (March 1-7, 2014). In it, Watson suggests that diabetes, dementias, cardiovascular disease, and some cancers are linked to a failure to generate sufficient biological oxidants, called reactive oxygen species (ROS). He also argues the case for a better understanding of the role of exercise in helping to remedy this deficiency.279
What is Redox?
Redox is derived from REDuction/OXidation and refers to redox signaling molecules. It is also known as Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) in scientific literature. The old and simplistic view of oxidants being bad and antioxidants being good is incorrect. Oxidants and antioxidants work in harmony and you can’t just have one or the other.
The energy source of the cell, the mitochondria, use the kreb’s cycle to produce ATP (energy). In this process a few molecules are cast off. Scientists once thought they were waste products but it is now understood that these molecules are redox signaling molecules (aka ROS). These redox signaling molecules protect, detect, repair, and replace other molecules. They direct cell communication and are essentially like traffic cops who work to prevent collisions by activating antioxidants such as glutathione, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase.
Our bodies naturally make these redox signaling molecules. A healthy baby has 100% cell efficiency. As we age, our cells become less efficient. It takes longer to heal, we have less energy, and we have less of these redox signaling molecules. Recently there was a scientific breakthrough made by Dr. Gary Samuelson, a medical atomic physicist, who for the first time in history stabilized these redox signaling molecules. The process took many years to perfect and takes about three days to be completed. These stabilized redox molecules last for 1 year when manufactured and has a half-life of 2 years. The end product is strictly redox signaling molecules, meaning it’s a native substance to the body. While most substances in creation have a toxicity point, these redox molecules do not. Testing has shown that they are 100% nontoxic and therefore safe for the body. So even super sensitive people see amazing results when using this product.
The importance of this breakthrough cannot be overstated. It is one of the biggest natural product breakthroughs in a long time! This product is very effective in the athletic world, as research has shown that ingesting it for 7-10 days before performing increases VO2max in athletes by 10% and the ventilatory threshold by 12%.280 Likewise, research in mice has shown a 29% increase in endurance with redox signaling molecules and a sparing of glycogen by 33%.281
What really excites me is that redox signaling molecules improve the function of glutathione by 500%. This means it activates glutathione that is already in the cell! Think of it as flipping a switch or hitting a button to turn a light bulb on. The light bulb, light fixture, and wiring are all there but the light won’t turn on until you activate it. Similarly, until you tell glutathione to do something, it just sits there. Redox signaling molecules also increase the production of glutathione and SOD without any inflammatory triggers that normally come from antioxidant production.282
How to Take Redox
Redox signaling molecules are consumed orally by itself, at least ten minutes before or after eating or drinking. Swish it around your mouth for a minute before swallowing. They are not to be mixed with anything (not even water). Do not drink directly from the bottle, otherwise the enzymes in your saliva could start breaking down the redox signaling molecules. I typically recommend my adult clients consume two ounces twice a day. Personally, I like to increase the dosage at the beginning until symptoms are noted and then reduce that amount slightly and take that dosage for a month. Typical symptoms would include headaches, nausea, rash, or fatigue. These symptoms usually pass within 1-3 days.
I think of taking these stabilized redox molecules as refilling the empty reservoir of redox signaling molecules in my body. For instance severely challenged people can consume four ounces four times a day. I recommend only increasing the dosage beyond four ounces a day under the supervision of a qualified health professional.
For clients with lung issues, I like to have them nebulize with the redox signaling molecules. I have them nebulize 0.5 to 1 ounce for about 15 minutes. This is my clinical recommendation, and is not promoted by the manufacturer of the redox signaling molecules.
Taste Note
Some people have said that stabilized redox molecules smell like pool water. I can tell you, that it’s not pool water that’s been put into a bottle. Clinically, it seems that the stronger you smell the “pool water” scent, the more you need the molecules. Over time, this decreases and you won’t smell it as much. This is not a super juice drink, antioxidant formula, or structured water, it is literally a bottle of trillions of redox signaling molecules and nothing more.
Adrenals
To support your adrenal glands, I suggest taking an adrenal herbal formula and adding a biocommand about a month later. Biocommands keep your body from adapting to the formula and shorten the time needed to repair your adrenals. As an added bonus, herbal thyroid formulas typically work best when taken in the morning with an adrenal formula.
Increasing Vitamin C and unrefined salt (such as Himalayan salt) also help to rebuild the adrenal glands. Likewise, phosphatidylserine strengthens the adrenal glands, decreases cortisol, and helps your cells work better with more effective communication and metabolism.283
Skin
Do you have skin problems? Your digestive tract might be to blame. I have had sensitive skin since the day I was born. I also had terrible acne because of the “standard American diet” that I followed. Cleaning up my diet and fixing my digestive tract has transformed my skin and greatly improved my complexion. The takeaway point is that skin conditions need to be taken care of internally.
Many people use Botox® at a cost between $200-$600 per session to smooth their skin. Botox® is a neurotoxin, which I recommend you stay away from. 100% shea butter or coconut oil is great for dry skin, but remember to always look at what is going on inside your body to cause your outward symptoms.
My favorite product for topically treating the skin is the redox signaling molecules that have been stabilized into a gel so they can be applied to the skin. Redox signaling molecules are only available as a liquid or gel. Research done with this from Dermatest®, gave it 5 stars after it found the following results after just 28 days of use:
• 21% average decrease in eye wrinkle depth
• 23% improvement in overall wrinkles
• 22% improvement in facial skin texture
• 23% improvement in the smoothness of skin
• 20% increase in elasticity
• 11% average increase in skin moisture
Couple this with the information we discussed about the benefits of consuming redox signaling molecules, and you can see why this is such an exciting area of research in the natural health world!
Male & Female Hormones
Did you know that hormones? Hormone downstream issue, meaning that they’re not the real source of the problem. You can’t fix someone by giving them a bioidentical hormone (adding more hormones won’t solve the problem). I’m not saying that bioidentical hormones are bad (I believe they can be a good crutch to use as your body heals). However, to actually fix the problem, you must heal the hormone receptor.

problems are almost always a Hormone replacement therapy, such as Evista®, Premarin®, and Estratab® deplete Vitamin B2, B6, B12, C, folate, magnesium and zinc from your body. The only time to take a bioidentical hormone is after being given a 24-hour hormone urine test to ensure you’re not pushing a hormone further out of balance.
My wife’s grandmother, a retired nurse, had a heart attack at the age of 55 after undergoing hormone replacement therapy. After she stopped the hormone replacement therapy she didn’t get any more blood clots. I do not think this is a coincidence. Later, when she was 66 years old her doctor put her on Fosamax® to improve her bone density. That caused her skin to become thin and leathery. Heather and I could literally see the change the drug made in her appearance. The late Dr. John Lee stated that Fosamax® is actually from the same chemical you use to clean the dead skin cells off the edge of your bathtub.284
Decreased testosterone causes the following: decreased libido, decreased muscle mass, decreased bone density, slow beard growth, thinning body hair, increased central body fat, increased fatigue, cognitive impairment, and depressive moods. N o w t h a t f e m a l e h o r m o n e replacement is an accepted form of treatment in the traditional medical world, the new craze is testosterone replacement therapy. Testosterone replacement therapy is rising at an exceptional rate in America. Over two million men take testosterone and the sales of these drugs rose from $18 million to $400 million in just four years (1998-2002)!285 Estimated sales in 2011 were $1.8 billion and it is estimated sales will reach $5 billion by 2017!286 There were ten times more testosterone prescriptions in 2011 than in 2000.287

We know that plastics decrease testosterone. Increased urinary levels of endocrine-disrupting phthalates, found in flexible plastic and some personal-care products, are associated with significant declines in testosterone levels not just in men, but in women and children as well.288 Moreover, research has shown a connection between insulin resistance and high testosterone levels in women.289
Prostate and Gonads are the organs that support testosterone. Prostate herbal formulas and anti-fungal herbal formulas are great for the prostate. I have found that specifically detoxifying the pituitary gland and hypothalamus ultimately have a long term positive effect on those suffering from hormone problems. Supplement recommendations depend on testing results.
If someone has too much 5-alpha reductase (male or female) there are some fantastic natural products that will female) there are some fantastic natural products that will alpha-reductase inhibitor often given in traditional medical circles, which can cause the body to convert regular testosterone into the more toxic forms of testosterone.
If a man has an aromatization issue, this causes an excessive conversion of testosterone into estrogen. Excessive tissue in a man’s chest points to the need to reduce aromatase. The most important thing to control is their level of insulin. I also like to give those men 100-200mg of diindolylmethane (DIM). The typical dose is 200mg for the first three months and than 100mg after.
Ovaries are the female organs that are responsible for estrogen and progesterone production in females. If women have low progesterone, there are steps that need to be taken before treatment. You need to make sure your DHEA and testosterone levels are not too high because progesterone will drive these more out of balance.
Many of the things I have discussed in this book have a big impact on hormones including methylation, increasing good fats, redox, and other protocols. Remember complete hormone testing is very important when working with hormone dysfunction and going upstream to find the source of the hormone issue must be the priority.
