The incidence of congenital neural tube defects in Tanzania is not known. Reports from some sub Saharan countries show that spinal dysraphism is not uncommon. Clinical experience in our practice indicates that these abnormalities are not uncommon. This preliminary study was designed to provide a working estimate on the incidence and the pattern of neural tube defects at the Muhimbili National Hospital.
