4.1 Services offered by FTTH Worldwide At this time FTTH services are not available widely worldwide. At most of the places the
FTTH networks are in planning or construction phase and at some places trials are under
progress. USA and Japan are two places where a lot of work is going on in this field. The
number of residences with actual FTTH connection is increasing at the rate of 200%
annually since July 2001 onwards. At this time in US, all the homes served with FTTH
are offering high speed Internet, about 75% are offered video, 67% are offered voice and
about 60% are offered all three services.
In the city of Palo Alto (U.S.A) the services offered via FTTH network are 3 X standard
telephone lines, high speed Ethernet data connection for Internet with 4.5 Mbps uplink
and 7 Mbps downlink and 100 Mbps to the Intranet, CATV connection for TV broadcast
and DBS (Direct Broadcast Satellite) connector for satellite television so that high quality
TV services are available without installing a satellite dish receiver.
NTT has already started FTTH commercial service in some areas of Japan. The monthly
charges are as low as 2850 yen (~ 25 US$ @ 116.10 yen = 1 US$) per month. At the
same time some of the experiments are in progress. In one of the experiments NTT is
providing 100 Mbps Internet access with multi-channel (500 channels) high quality
digital video.
At the same time the 100 Mbps Internet access via FTTH network is available in parts of
Tokyo and Osaka. The plans are to extend this service to all cities with population of at
least 300,000 people with penetration aim of 20% household and 25% enterprises in the
initial phase.
4.2 Benefits of Services Offered by FTTH Services offered by FTTH network have tremendous advantages. These benefits are due
to the advantages that optical fiber offers. The tremendous bandwidth available at much
longer distances is a real advantage that fiber has and no other media can match. In this
way the services that need a real broadband access can be offered by FTTH network.
