ONOMASTIC UNITS IN THE CLASSICAL AZERBAIJANIAN 

LITERARY LANGUAGE OF THE XV – 

 AT THE BEGINNING XVI CENTURIES 

 

S u m m a r y 

 

The article deals with onomastic units – toponyms, cosmonyms – used 

in the classical Azerbaijanian literary language. 

The article consists of two parts: 1 – toponyms; 2 – cosmonyms. In the 

first  part  are  examined:  a)  horonyms  –  names  of  the  continents,  countries, 

states;  b)  astionyms  –  names  of  cities.  In  the  second  part  are  studied 

cosmonyms  –  names  of  celestial  bodies  (planets,  stars)  with  their  Arabic-

Persian  synonyms,  poetical  and  stylistic  peculiarities  of  toponyms  and 

cosmonyms,  their  functions  in  fiction  and  poetry  on  the  basis  of  the  rich 

factual material.  

The  research  makes  it  possible  to  come  to  the  following  conclusion: 

onomastic  units  that  indicate  geographical  names  are  used  in  fiction  and 

poetry  with  poetical  purpose  and  serve  figurative,  expressive,  emotional 

expression of ideas.
