AB - ABSTRACT: The Southernmost Middle Magdalena Valley Basin of Colombia (Honda Sub-Basin) is an oil province bounded West and East by the Central and Eastern Andean Cordilleras respectively. We have studied the Late Cretaceous-Cenozoic changing basin configuration of this region through the study of facies, provenance, and synorogenic stratal geometries. Structural interpretation of subsurface data combined with fission track and Ar/Ar geochronology is used to determine the timing of deformation. Shown by this work is the strong effect of synsedimentary deformation of source and basinal areas on the architecture of the sedimentary fill. Maastrichtian unroofing of the Central Cordillera sourced a series of conglomeratic fan- and braided-deltas, which interfingered with calcareous marine sediments. These reservoir facies are exploration targets in this region. Continental alluvial plain sedimentation occurred during the Paleocene prior. to eastward building of Eocene (?) alluvial fans. Initial deformation of the Eastern Cordillera caused diversion of braided and sinuous streams towards the north during the rest of the Paleogene and is expressed in synorogenic geometries. Conversion to an intermontane basin continued during the Neogene. Miocene fluvial sedimentation was partially contemporaneous with volcanism in the Central Cordillera between 10.92+ or -0.11 Ma and 7.5+ or -0.6 Ma. Improved correlation of rocks and events with neighboring basins follows from these new data. Our results provide tools for exploration of untapped reserves and for understanding burial and oil-generation histories.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Piedemonte gas condensate fields are located in a structural triangle zone in the foothills of the Eastern Cordillera. After the discovery of the giant Cusiana (1991) and Cupiagua (1992) fields in the southern part of the trend, BP continued to explore to the Northwest and discovered the Piedemonte accumulations; Volcanera (1993), Pauto (1995), Florena (1995) and Dele (1996). The initial interpretation of the area had large simple frontal structures formed during the Andean orogeny ( approximately 5 million years ago) by the inversion of a Cretaceous rift basin. Continued acquisition of seismic and well data indicated more structural and stratigraphic complexity. The structures were then interpreted as an in-sequence, thin-skinned, imbricate thrust stack with a climbing detachment. All the imbricates were interpreted to have long, trailing back-limbs that returned to regional elevation, providing a large source kitchen in communication with the anticlinal traps, and a low probability of reservoir communication between thrust sheets. The current interpretation is based on integration of; reprocessed 2D seismic, a larger well data base, surface geology, apatite fission track analysis, cut-off and branch-line maps, and the construction of balanced sections. This analysis indicates that the triangle zone evolved through multiple phases of deformation beginning more than 15 million years ago. The key differences in this model are that, imbricates have a common regional detachment in the Lower-Middle Cretaceous, and short back-limbs ending in footwall synclines. This geometry provides a higher potential for communication between structures and a reduced source kitchen area within each imbricate.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Llanos Basin of Colombia is a proven petroleum province in a fold and thrust belt/foreland basin setting. With three giant fields on production the question now is, where is the remaining potential of the basin, and will more giant fields be found? The static elements of the Llanos petroleum systems; source, reservoir and seal, are generally understood. Less well understood are the dynamic aspects such as migration pathways, timing of migration, and the resultant distribution of petroleum volume, quality and phase. Integration of new geochemical analysis with our most recent work on timing of hydrocarbon generation with respect to structuring allows us to identify both new plays and the remaining potential of proven plays in the Llanos Basin. Two of the giant discoveries, Cusiana and Cupiagua, are anticlinal traps in the foothills trend. Considerable potential still remains in this fold and thrust belt, including three undrilled regional structural culminations visible on the surface. These are currently interpreted as stacked anticlinal thrust sheets, each containing the main regional reservoirs. In contrast to the foothills, structures in the foreland are subtle. The third giant field, Cano Limon, lies in this structural province. Two plays have been successfully pursued in the foreland-the Cano Limon transpressional play and a normal fault play just east of the foothills. A sequence stratigraphic and structural interpretation of the basin, coupled with an understanding of the dynamic hydrocarbon system, provides the basis for new play concepts in the largely underexplored foreland.

AB - ABSTRACT: Since the reactivation of Galeras volcano in 1988 its seismic activity has been dominated by a variety of LP waveforms and tremor events. Some of these signals occurred as a response to volcanic activity. Among them, two kinds of tremor deserve special attention, Flute tremor and Spasmodic tremor. Flute tremor has a spectrum of equally spaced peaks and is associated with a quasi-steady degassing process at the top of the lava dome. It is accompanied by a flute-like sound. Its spectral features and the correlation with field observations are consistent with a model generation indicating that a crack or set of cracks are excited to resonance by the release and flow of gas through the lava dome. Spasmodic tremor is composed of several distinct LP-like events joined together by a continuous signal with lower amplitudes. Two types of spasmodic tremor may be distinguished on the basis of their spectral characteristics and field observations. Spasmodic tremor type I is apparently dominated by a mix of P, SH and Rayleigh waves as determined from preliminary polarization analysis. The source appears to be located, in a region west of the active crater. As a first approximation, Spasmodic tremor type I could be associated with magmatic intrusion process occurred in 1989-1991.

AB - ABSTRACT: Long-duration events have been recorded at several active, andesitic volcanoes. Their main characteristics are a single, sharp frequency peak, and an exceptionally long coda. Because their seismograms resemble a screw, these signals are called "tornillos" in Colombia. These events have been recorded during different stages of volcanic activity at various volcanoes worldwide. Tornillos have occurred for example, as a short-term precursor to eruptions at Galeras volcano, Colombia (1992-1993); and at Asama volcano, Japan, (1983). At Tokachi volcano, Japan, they were recorded after an eruption (1989). The Tornillo's dominant frequency appears to be related to the time of occurrence during an eruption cycle. It is independent of epicentral distance, azimuth, travel time, and lapse time, indicating that it is a source characteristic. Damping coefficients for the tornillo's coda range between 0.002 and 0.02. In contrast, damping coefficients for normal long-period events lies between 0.010 and 0.025 and for volcano-tectonic events between 0.010 and 0.040. In March 1996, the Galeras seismic network, which consists of short period, single-component seismometers, was augmented with a broadband, three-component station. This station, installed 1.5 km south of Galeras active cone, recorded a series of six tornillos. Narrowband and broadband tornillo records have similar characteristics in the time and frequency domains.

AB - ABSTRACT: Many of the recent ash eruptions of Galeras volcano (Colombia) have been preceded by tornillos. These unusual seismic events of unknown origin have screw-like profiles on seismograms and can last up to several minutes. In March, 1996, a broadband, three-component seismometer station was installed 1.6 km south of Cono, Galeras' active vent. With high quality recordings acquired by this system, and methods which work well with narrow band signals, we investigate the frequency content and polarization properties of two tornillos. They have slighty different predominant frequencies, 3.0420 Hz and 3.0595 Hz which remain highly stable for the entire tornillo duration. The polarization analysis shows that the polarization for the two events also differs slightly but remains constant. Most of their energy is linearly polarized and lies in the horizontal plane. If these waves are taken to be SH waves, the remaining energy is confined to the beginning of the tornillo during its initiation or excitation. The remainder of the tornillo is characterized by exponential decay. These observations provide parameters for the classification of tornillos and constraints for source models.

AB - ABSTRACT: The emerald deposits of Muzo and Coscuez hosted within the western flank of the Colombian Eastern Cordillera formed during thrust tectonics affecting series of lower Cretaceous black shales. An unusual polygenetic breccia fills opened fractures and dilatant sites within thrusts and tear faults. Detailed field and petrographic studies show that the breccia formed during a fluidization process in which a hydrothermal pulp was injected into dilatant sites. Fluidization is synchronous with fault propagation. Multistage brecciation is observed and appears to correspond to successive faulting-fluid flow pulses. The opening of dilatant sites during compressive tectonics and the combination of fluidization and hydraulic fracturing suggests that these pulses may be related to successive build-up and drop of the fluid pressure.
