AB - ABSTRACT: Early Maastrichtian to Early Paleocene accretion of a subduction complex to the west side of the Colombian Central Cordillera produced both the extinction of a Cretaceous extensional basin and the beginning of a foreland basin that dominates the Tertiary of the Colombia basin. The Maastrichtian-Paleocene sedimentary succession is characterized by a major shift of depositional systems from marine to coastal plain and continental environments that is closely related to the reorganization of the basin. This succession is bounded both at base and top by regional unconformities. The lower unconformity is related to the accretion of the subduction complex in the early Maastrichtian and onset of the transition extensional to foreland basin. The accretion of the Western Cordillera and the regional uplift of the Central Cordillera produced the Late Paleocene-Eocene unconformity at the top. Deposits above this unconformity record the growth of a foreland basin during the later Tertiary. The sandstone composition of the Maastrichtian-Paleocene succession changes progressively upsection from quartzarenite to litharenite, indicating the uplift of Precambrian Quetame and Santander-Floresta massifs, as well as local uplifts in the Central Cordillera. Some structures bounding these massifs coincide with older faults dating from the extensional phase of the basin. These uplifts segmented the formerly continuous Cretaceous extensional basin into two depositional sub-basins, the eastern and the western basins. In the western basin the thickness increases northward, whereas the eastern is more condensed, decreasing in thickness eastward. Maximum subsidence was reached in an elongate depocenter located between the Quetame and Floresta massifs, and its axis was parallel to older north-south normal faults. The basin transition also produced a regional change in the polarity of the shoreline and associated coastal-fluvial deposits from east-west during the Late Cretaceous, to south-north in the late Maastrichtian.

AB - ABSTRACT: Three well-defined structural styles have been identified in this 700 km long by 100 km wide region that follows the eastern border of the mountain chains. In the central-northern part of the Cordillera Oriental there are both thin-skin and high-angle, basement involved tectonics. In the southern Andes de Merida and northern Cordillera oriental there are emergent imbricate high-angle faults involving basement. These two structural domains have opposite vergences and they are separated by a left-lateral transfer zone. Finally, the structural style of the northern portion of the Andes de Merida is controlled by the Caribbean allochthonous rocks, which override sedimentary sequences of the continental domain.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Eocene Mirador Formation is an important reservoir unit in the Llanos Basin of Colombia. A Northern Llanos composite standard, graphic correlation study of the Mirador in the Cano Caranal Block shows a hiatus within the Mirador spanning approximately 2.16 million years. The unit identified as Mirador in the Centellas-1 well is late Middle Eocene but older than in the remaining wells, possibly because of a wrench fault between them. Composite standard, graphic correlation analysis allows the quantification of missing time and the recognition of stratal architecture.

AB - ABSTRACT: The upheaval of the northern Andes in Miocene and Pliocene time changed the drainage system in northern South America significantly and caused the present-day rain forest areas of Choco and the Lower Magdalena Valley became separated from Amazonas. Plant diversity may have reached the highest level in the Miocene or Pliocene, and excessive present-day phytodiversity may be regarded as a legacy of the Tertiary, rather than an evolutionary product of the Quaternary. In the Quaternary strong temperature oscillations, related to the series of ice-ages, were superposed on the Late Tertiary forest dynamics, which included river displacement and latitudinal migrations of the equatorial rain belt (caloric equator) with the rhythm of the precession cycle of orbital climate forcing. The hypothesis that claims a permanent rain forest cover all over the Amazon basin during the last glacial is in contrast with the "forest refugia hypothesis", which accepts replacement of rain forest by savanna, or savanna forest, during dry climatic intervals. Both scenarios have been evidenced by pollen records. In this paper, it is suggested that both hypotheses are not necessarily conflicting and apparently did occur in different parts of the Amazon basin, and in different periods, depending on the climatological constraints. A compilation of the most important literature concerning the vegetational, climatic, and environmental history of the rain forest areas of Amazonas and Choco, and surrounding dry ecosystems has been included.

AB - ABSTRACT: For the first time on the Atlantic insular shelf, megaripple fields, present in coarse to very coarse sands and in gravels, have been recognized by side-scan sonar between 20 and 60 m depth. Similar sedimentary structures have been already spotted on the shelves of Guadeloupe and Colombia. Megaripple characteristics indicate the sedimentary structure origin (cyclonic waves rather than tidal or wind-driven currents) and the motion processes. We can propose a correlation between these wave structures and the two last and most intense hurricanes: David (1979) and Allen (1980).

AB - ABSTRACT: In the last two decades, the exploration industry has been encouraged, as well as the local governments, to reach high levels of production, with minimal environmental impact over working areas. In the Latin American industry, a well-known document called Environment Impact Study (EIS), which includes an Environmental Management Plan (EMP), states the main rules to follow over all the project exploration phases, avoiding and mitigating several impacts generated locally. For seismic crews in jungle areas, there are 3 particular topics, in which their proper control system is mandatory for our operations: Social Impact (Inhabitants and Indigene Communities interactivity), Vegetation Impact (Working on Reservation Areas) and Animal Impact (Bio-diversity control). Explaining GAPS particular cases, in the Peruvian northern forest we assisted a 3-D seismic crew, where the Corrientes River flows across the project area. In this program, we were to construct at least 50 helipads and another 50 drop-zones for logistic purposes. Due to the fact that the EMP recommended just 40 helipads, we selected 6 zones utilized previously for helipad construction, and 32 Primary Forest zones as well, in which the deforestation was minimal, around an ecosystem comprised of a local palm tree known as Aguaje. Approximately 0.06% of the project zone was deforested. Our Safety and Environmental Advisors were closely supervising this job, obtaining good results in helipads and drop zones. Furthermore, a detailed forest inventory was undertaken to control cut-off species. From the former inventories, we calculated statistically the deforested areas and species, broadly fulfilling the EMP requirements. Therefore, it was necessary to build a plant house, sowing seeds and local native plants during the last 3 months of this project. In other GAPS projects, the forest areas have restricted the control of plants. Nevertheless, we used to re-forest using local trees for planting, acquired through industrial plant houses. Moreover, we have considered that the GAPS HSE Department, which has been closely involved with every seismic crew, has a better understanding of the local impact generated. For this reason, we help in the reforestation and demobilization plan from the beginning of the project. For the example shown above, the plant house had 2 objectives: Take local species that have grown up properly, sow them across the helipads closer to the Base Camp, and evaluate their behavior due to stress provoked by some transplantations. This allowed us to take some branches from the sowed helipads and re-sow them immediately, mostly aided by a local botanic expert. The personnel in charge of the reforestation plan walked down the area in several crews, carrying out other tasks such as: camps recovery, sanitary fill-in pits closure, septic wells closure, waste classification for final disposal, shot-points and counter-holes closures, staking and picking-up cable. Based on the clear and operative structure in HSE (Health, Safety and Environment management), joined with the invaluable collaboration of local inhabitants at each work area, has allowed us to achieve the development of exploration projects with a minimal environmental impact.
