AB - ABSTRACT: Using a recently-developed method for determining the carbon isotopic composition of atmospheric carbon dioxide directly from C3 vascular plant tissue, we report on the delta (super 13) C analysis of terrestrial carbon from sediments of Barremian-Aptian (early Cretaceous) age, Colombia, South America. From delta (super 13) C measurements made on bulk organic carbon and components specific to vascular land plants (vitrinite and cuticle) we construct a record of delta (super 13) C in atmospheric carbon dioxide for the Early Cretaceous that shows a striking negative excursion (= -7 %) in atmospheric carbon dioxide delta (super 13) C value in the mid-Aptian, followed by a rapid positive compensation (= +6 %) during the late Aptian. These trends are correlated by delta (super 13) C values measured for marine carbonates, which demonstrate a much less dramatic, but apparent, negative excursion and positive return indicated in the marine record during the middle-to-late Aptian. Simple source-mixing analysis suggests that modulation of photosynthetically fixed carbon is the most reasonable mechanism for explaining the mid-Aptian delta (super 13) C excursion of atmospheric carbon dioxide observed, which supports previously established climate-change hypotheses for this period involving changing global biomass productivity.

AB - ABSTRACT: The modeling and analysis of recent block structure of Earth's crust allow much room for a use of the neotectonic investigations in oil exploration and earthquake prediction. In this paper, we will illustrate it by the examples of the Andes and California. A hierarchical model of the recent block structure includes the following main components: 1) homogenous areas-blocks; 2) linear zones between blocks-morphostructural lineaments; 3) areas of intersection of the morphostructural lineaments-morphostructural knots. The most important feature of the development of the regional model (morphostructural zoning) is the establishment of hierarchy of blocks and of morphostructural lineaments dividing them. In our approach the prime element of morphostructure is a block. The position of the lineaments (the borders of the blocks) are determined not locally but as a part of a broad pattern. This increases the reliability of the lineaments as treks of the recent tectonic life. The morphostructural zoning was applied to the oil exploration problem in Andes of South America. We found that of 17 main oil and gas fields in the region 16 proved to coincide with morphostructural knots. We applied computer pattern recognition for recognizing knots which contain (or can contain) giant oil fields. As a result we found 11 knots which should contain giant oil fields but had not been developed yet (the prediction was published in 1986). The field test results will be presented: since 1986 only three new giant oil/gas fields were found in the Andes (South America)--Cano Limon, Cusiana-Cupiagua (Colombia) and Camisea (Peru). All three are located in predicted sites. There are four more sites in that region recognized as highly perspective and which are sites of special interest for future drilling. Morphostructural zoning was also applied to the problem of forecasting sites where strong earthquakes (E) will occur in the future. The prognostic map of California was published in 1976. Since that time 14 strong E (magnitude >6.0) occurred in California. 13 epicenters were located in the predicted areas and 4 out of them in new areas, where strong E were not known (for example, vicinity of Los Angeles).

AB - ABSTRACT: Direct evidence of permafrost rock occurrence on the highest summits of equatorial and subequatorial geographic belts are extremely scarce. But there are rather strong grounds to support their presence. The structure of geocryologic zonation of equatorial mountains is two-membered and that of subequatorial mountains is three-membered.

AB - ABSTRACT: Paleotectonic and paleogeographic reconstructions for Early Jurassic through Early Cretaceous time suggest an equivalent tectonic evolution of the Magdalena Valley and Cordillera Oriental of Colombia and southwestern New Mexico and southeastern Arizona, preceding and during the breakup of Pangaea. This equivalence is supported by a broad similarity in lithology and age of correlative strata for these now widely separated regions of South and North America. Early to Middle Jurassic continental arc magmatism, related to subduction along the western margin of Pangaea, is recorded by thick intermediate volcanic and coeval intrusive rocks in both Colombia and southern Arizona. These volcanic, hypabyssal and intrusive rocks have been interpreted as products of stratovolcanoes and caldera complexes. Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous marine, continental and mafic volcanic deposits in southern New Mexico and Arizona record a system of extensional basins, the Borderland rift system (= McCoy, Bisbee, and Chihuahua basins) associated with the opening of the Gulf of Mexico. A similar succession of Upper Jurassic continental deposits and Lower Cretaceous marine strata with some mafic intrusions is present in the Middle Magdalena and Cocuy basins of Colombia. Abrupt local changes in thickness of correlative Lower Cretaceous units indicate normal fault control of sedimentation. Volcanism abruptly decreased and extension concluded during late Early Cretaceous time in both areas. We infer that the Borderland rift and extensional basins of the Magdalena Valley and Cordillera Oriental formed as a once-contiguous rift system coordinate with opening of the Gulf of Mexico and proto-Caribbean basins. The north-trending rifts failed, whereas the Gulf of Mexico and proto-Caribbean opened, ultimately to form oceanic lithosphere in latest Jurassic and earliest Cretaceous time.

AB - ABSTRACT: In samples of slate from the Fomeque Formation near Bogota, Colombia, pyrophyllite was found to occur together with mixed-layered illite-smectite, chlorite and illite. Other minerals were quartz, K-feldspar, dolomite and pyrite. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed that the mixed-layer represents an R1 ordered rectorite with 80-90% illite layers. The microfabric is developed as a closely spaced cleavage in the phyllosilicate-rich rocks, and grades into a fracture cleavage with coarsening of the grain size. No cleavage was observed in the interbedded siltstones. It is suggested that the microfrabrics developed in these rocks correspond to high diagenetic to anchizonal conditions. The illite crystallinity from the slate has been measured on glycolated samples and ranges from 0.47 to 0.55 degrees Delta 2theta , with a mean of 0.52 degrees Delta 2theta . Based on the stability of R1 ordered rectorite, the illite crystallinity and the microfabric development, it is proposed that the rocks have been subjected to a temperature of approximately 200 degrees C at low pressure. At this temperature, pyrophyllite can only be stabilized at the expense of kaolinite and quartz if alpha H (sub 2) O<<1.

AB - ABSTRACT: Multichannel seismic reflection profiles reveal the tectonic and stratigraphic complexity of the Caribbean province. A smooth reflector B" forms the top of widespread Cretaceous volcanic flows drilled during DSDP Leg 15 and ODP Leg 165. In addition we also show other seismic evidence of volcanism (sills and dipping horizons). The southern parts of the Venezuela and Colombia basins are underlain by rough basement that shows many characteristics of oceanic crust. Several thick volcanic plateaus separated by deep basins with thin crust comprise the Caribbean volcanic province. In the Venezuela basin only normal oceanic crust is present, but in other basins this crust is underlain by underplated volcanic material. The crust of the Venezuela basin is less than 5 km thick and was probably formed in the Pacific during the Jurassic. Refraction data indicate that a thin layer, 2V, is formed by original oceanic crust overlain by a thin volcanic layer. An intra basement reflection (sub-B") marks the top of original oceanic crust that is sandwiched between an upper volcanic layer and lower underplated material. This underplated layer forms a very thick layer, 3V, beneath the Beata and Nicaragua volcanic plateaus. The upper part of layer 3V is gabbroic and outcrops on the Beata ridge. The thickening occurs mainly in the high-velocity lower part of layer 3V and is attributed to the presence of magnesian rocks (picrites or ultramafic cumulates). A highly reflective horizon (R) is located at the top of this layer. We present a model where the Galapagos plume is 2500 km wide but has narrow heads that formed the Caribbean volcanic plateaus separated by deep basins. The Caribbean igneous province is compared to similar volcanic features in the Indian Ocean (Kerguelen plateau) and in the Western Pacific Ocean (Ontong Java plateau, Nauru and Pigafetta basins. The thick plateaus of the Caribbean province resemble the Kerguelen and Ontong Java plateaus, whereas the deep basins present some similarities with the Nauru and Pigafetta basins. The Caribbean igneous province is younger (90-75 Ma) than the Indian and Pacific plateaus (110-130 Ma); however, several geological evidences from land and geophysical offshore observations indicate that the onset of volcanic activity in the Caribbean province could be as old as 115 Ma.

AB - ABSTRACT: Quadrupolar mass-spectrometric study of fluids trapped in inclusions and channels is used to characterize the qualitative and quantitative composition of fluids within emeralds from 10 deposits located on the eastern and western margins of the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia. Fluids in channels and in fluid inclusions have the same qualitative composition. The bulk composition of the fluid phase is: H (sub 2) O (80 to 92 mol%), N (sub 2) (3 to 10%), CO (sub 2) (2.5 to 5%), H (sub 2) (1 to 5%), CO (0.1 to 1.5%), CH (sub 4) (<0.5%), organic compounds (<0.05%), and inert gases. Hydrogen and carbon monoxide in large part come from water and carbon dioxide reduction. Fluids trapped during emerald growth belong to an aquo-carbonic fluid phase with CO (sub 2) /N (sub 2) ratios near 1 (0.8 to 0.84 in fluid inclusions, 1 to 1.3 in channels). Fluid contents in channels are higher by approximately 20% in emeralds from the western group compared to those in the eastern deposits. The concentration of H (sub 2) O in channels in emeralds from the eastern group is lower (1.35
