AB - ABSTRACT: The Sub-Andean (SA) fold-thrust belt and associated foreland basins, from eastern Venezuela to the southern tip of Argentina, represent one of the world's most prolific hydrocarbon provinces. Common to SA hydrocarbon systems is late Tertiary deformation which is responsible for structural traps, migration pathways and the tectonic load which drove subsidence and source maturation. Classic asymmetric foreland basins trapped large volumes of hydrocarbons expelled from the fold-thrust belt. Foreland deformation was controlled by inherited basement fabric, late Tertiary stress orientation and the geometry of the subducted slab. The local Paleozoic/Mesozoic tectonic histories of the South American continent were important in defining the hydrocarbon systems of the SA. The passive margin setting which developed over a Jurassic to Early Cretaceous rifted margin allowed deposition of oil-prone, Upper Cretaceous source rocks from Venezuela to northern Peru. The central SA segment developed over a west-facing Paleozoic passive margin and foreland basin which accommodated source rocks responsible for large gas-condensate accumulations. Opening of the South Atlantic created half-grabens in the southern segment of the SA in which important Mesozoic lacustrine and marine source rocks were deposited. SA structural architecture manifests both thin-skinned deformation, from Colombia to central Peru and central to southern Argentina, and basement-involved inversion of Mesozoic grabens. The intervening segment is characterized by more continuous pre-Tertiary stratigraphy resulting in efficient detachment surfaces, thin-skinned deformation and folds of great strike length.

AB - ABSTRACT: Determining and evaluating the boundary between normal pressure and anomalous pressure regimes is essential to the successful exploration for hydrocarbons, especially when exploring for deep-basin or basin-center gas accumulations in petroliferous basins. In order to achieve this objective, interpretive techniques based on decompacted sonic log velocity and seismic interval velocity have been developed by the Institute for Energy Research at the University of Wyoming. The process of identifying the top of anomalous pressure using velocity data involves a number of intermediate steps. First, the raw sonic velocities are filtered for lithology (i.e., the filtering is accomplished using the gamma ray log so that only fine-grained clastic lithologies are represented). This step is particularly important in those basins where the section of interest is dominated by fine-grained lithologies. Second, the filtered sonic velocity is decompacted. The decompaction model assumes that sonic velocity increasing with burial as an exponential function and is constrained by the highest observed sonic log profile (i.e., typically about 5000 m/s). Finally the "anomalous" sonic profile is derived by taking the difference between the observed sonic velocity and the modeled sonic velocity (e.g., normal compaction trend). The objective of this technique is to isolate sonic velocity anomalies that can be attributed to anomalously pressured and gas saturated rock. This technique has been applied to a wide variety of petroliferous basins, including the Powder River Basin, Bighorn Basin, Wind River Basin, Washakie Basin, Denver Basin, San Juan Basin, Western Canada Basin, and Sand Wash basins in North America; Colombia basins in South America; Kutai Basin in Indonesia; and several basins in China. Results document that the technique can be used successfully to determine and evaluate the boundary between normal pressure and anomalous pressure regimes.

AB - ABSTRACT: An integrated study of organic petrography and analyses was used to evaluate the oil generation potential of the Upper Cretaceous coals in the Greater Green River Basin of Wyoming. The results indicate that these coals have great potential to store large volumes of oil and gas. Under proper geological conditions (at a certain maturation level with appropriate microfracturing and faulting) a significant volume of these hydrocarbons both oil and gas, will be expelled from the coal beds, saturating the interbedded sandstone layers. Hydrous pyrolysis experiments were used to simulate the generation and expulsion processes of Mesaverde coals and shales, and also to calculate their hydrocarbon generation potential. Hydrocarbon generation and destruction and the origin of some oil and gas fields in the Washakie Basin were modeled using the kinetic parameters obtained from these experiments. The methodology developed in this study was also used to evaluate the hydrocarbon generation potential of coals in the Cauca Valley Basin of Colombia. The methodology proved to be very successful in areas where no subsurface samples were available. The Eocene-Oligocene coaly sequence of the Cauca Basin contains coals with hydrogen index values above 300 mg/g and excellent oil and gas generation potential.

AB - ABSTRACT: A positive relationship between the population size of Globorotalia truncatulinoides in deep-sea sediments and thermostad thicknesses in mode waters of both the northern and the southern hemispheres is documented. In cores RC12-113, DSDP 588 and DSDP 591 (located north of the Tasman Front) G. truncatulinoides shows a decreasing trend in abundance from oxygen isotope stages 6 to 1, suggesting a progressive reduction of Subantarctic Mode Water (SAMW) thermostads in the northern Tasman Sea. Heating, seasonality and/or a more dynamic East Australian Current are suggested as possible mechanisms that cause the piling up of isotherms that distort thermostads in the northern Tasman Sea. Alternatively, a more vigorous mixing of the ocean (by convection and overturning) may have been in operation south of the Subtropical Convergence during glacial stage 6. Palaeoceanographic conditions during glacial stages 6 and 2 appear to be significantly different.

AB - ABSTRACT: Carbon and hydrogen isotopic data and biomarkers from oils, allowed the assessment, identification and differentiation of lacustrine and marine source rock depositional environments. The samples studied were recovered from Latin American syn-rift, sag and drift stages of Cretaceous and Tertiary ages. Two environments were identified in the syn-rift stage: (i) Lower Neocomian deep, fresh to brackish water lacustrine (Reconcavo basin, Brazil), (ii) Upper Neocomian shallow hypersaline lake (Sergipe basin, Brazil). Two environments were identified in sag basins: (iii) Tithonian semi-restricted shallow marine carbonate (Chiapas basin, Mexico), (iv) Aptian marine evaporitic. Four environments were identified in a drift stage: (v) Cenomanian-Turonian deep marine carbonate (Maracaibo basin, Venezuela), (vi) Miocene marine deltaic siliciclastic system (Lower Magdalena basin, Colombia), (vii) Miocene marine deltaic system with carbonatic influence (Foz de Amazonas basin, Brazil), and (vii) Oligocene marine deltaic proximal (Plato basin, Colombia). Within the tectono-sedimentary settings, successive sea level changes or expansions and contractions of the lacustrine water bodies, created variations in water column salinity and temperature and, hence, the development of water stratification and bottom water anoxia. These differences can be identified using only oil samples, without the need of actual source rock data. Even when oils or depositional environments are mixed, individual components and their relative contributions can be assessed.
