AB - ABSTRACT: This paper discusses the results of 1D modeling and geochemical analyses of rock, oil and gas samples performed in the foothills of the Putumayo Basin, Colombia. A multivariate statistical assessment of biomarker data points to the existence of three oil groups, two of the them similar to oil families reported in previous studies and related to the Villeta Formation source rocks, and a novel one tentatively associated with the Caballos Formation source rocks. Geochemical data of oil and gas samples points to a complex reservoir filling history in the foothills, with at least two migration pulses with distinct maturity levels. Vitrinite reflectance data together with modeling results shows that the source rock is practically immature in the Putumayo foothills, even in the footwall of large thrust faults. The thermal and burial reconstruction of a pseudo well located in the present cordillera area suggests that the source rocks have started petroleum generation and expulsion during the late Oligocene/Miocene. The oil and gas expelled during such a period have migrated over 80 km, reaching the present foreland area. Subsequent tectonic burial and/or higher heat flows related to the late Miocene/Pliocene Andean Paroxysm is thought to account for a second pulse of migration of thermally evolved hydrocarbons limited to the foothills area.

AB - ABSTRACT: The 300 m wide La Carbonera stock intrudes the northern approximately 1 Ga Oaxacan Complex, and ranges in composition from diorite through granodiorite to granophyric granite. The associated brecciation of the host rock and the zoned nature of amphibole and plagioclase suggest an explosive mechanism of intrusion. U-Pb analyses of abraded zircons yield variably discordant data that plot on a chord with intercepts at approximately 1,400 Ma and 275+ or -4 Ma, the latter interpreted as the time of intrusion based on the nearly concordant analysis of euhedral crystals. The upper intercept may be interpreted in terms of a mixed crustal source in the Oaxacan Complex that may include subducted sediments and enriched mantle sources. Variations in the major elements with silica (55->75%) suggest that the rocks represent a consanguineous series with crystallization of amphibole, Fe-Ti oxides and apatite up to approximately 60% SiO (sub 2) , above which plagioclase crystallized. Their chondrite-normalized REE patterns are enriched in LREE, with this enrichment decreasing with increasing SiO (sub 2) content. Their arc magmatic signature is recorded by various chemical discriminants: (1) mantle-normalized trace element patterns which show depletion in Nb and Ti; (2) their locations on Nb+Y versus Rb tectonic discrimination diagram; and (3) their locations in the pre-collisional field in the Batchelor and Bowden's chemical classification scheme. La Carbonera stock appears to form part of the Permo-Triassic magmatic arc that extends from the southern U.S.A through Mexico to Colombia, which has been related to subduction of Pacific plates beneath the western margin of Gondwana.

AB - ABSTRACT: The geological history of Mexico shows that there has been three events that were suitable for the development and formation of coal beds. The first event happened during the time span from the Upper Triassic to Middle Jurassic Epochs (200-170 Ma); the second event of favorable geologic conditions took place at the end of the Late Cretaceous Epoch during the Maestrichtian age (75-65 Ma); and the last third event happened during the Eocene Epoch, Lutetian-Bartonian Age (50-40 Ma). The Triassic-Jurassic event is represented by the coals of Northwest Mexico in the State of Sonora, and the coals present in the South of Mexico in the State of Oaxaca. The Maestrichtian age event is represented by the higher tonnage coals of the Sabinas and Fuentes-Rio Escondido sub-basins in the State of Coahuila; the coals of Ojinaga and San Pedro Corralitos of the Chihuahua State; and the coals of Cabullona in the state of Sonora. Eocene Epoch coals and lignites are present in the Colombia-San Ignacio region of Coahuila State. The Mexican coals that have been more explored and developed, because of their economic potential, are the Maestrichtian coals in the Coahuila State. Most of the coals in the sub-basins of Sabinas and Monclova are metallurgical, whereas the coals from the Fuentes-Rio Escondido basins are steam coals (long flame type); the latter ones are being used by the utility company (Federal Commission of Electricity, CFE) to generate electricity in their plants of Nava, Coahuila. Total annual production of steam and metallurgical coal of the State of Coahuila, is approximately 15.4 million metric tons. Six million is metallurgical coal and 9.4 is steam coal used locally to generate electricity. The Triassic-Jurassic coals from Sonora and the Oaxacan Mixteca are mostly bituminous but range up to semi-anthracitic or anthracitic. All the coal beds are badly deformed by several tectonic events that avoids any type of economic exploitation; some of them have also been affected by igneous intrusions, in Central Sonora, that formed graphite beds that are presently being mined successfully for this commodity.

AB - ABSTRACT: We have estimated the amount of magma that passed through the Stillwater Complex to form its Ultramafic Series. The estimate ranges from 70,000 to 210,000 km (super 3) . By comparison, the estimated eruptive volume of the Colombia River Flood basalt province is 170,000 km (super 3) . The estimate for the Stillwater volume is a minimum because the Ultramafic Series is about 20 percent of the thickness of the Complex where it is most complete and the chamber was larger then the exposed Complex now. About 20 cyclic units compose much of the Ultramafic Series, and most workers interpret their presence as an indication that the magma chamber filled and vented many times. In addition, the Complex is almost 6 km thick at its thickest point and was probably at least 8 km originally. The maximum metamorphic pressure at the base is 3 kb (9 km). Thus, the top of the complex was very close to or even at the surface, and venting almost certainly took place to the surface. Estimating the volume of magma involved several factors: (1) the area of the Complex, (2) the thickness of the Ultramafic Series; and, (3) the amount of fractionation that took place to form the cyclic units. The area of the Complex as determined by gravity and magnetics is 2500 to 4400 km (super 2) . From measured sections, the average thickness of the Ultramafic Series is 1400 m. From detailed study of the very small amount of change in Mg/(Mg+Fe) in the cumulate olivine and orthopyroxene (Mg .86-.84), we conclude that no more than 3-5 percent fractionation took place during the deposition of the Ultramafic Series. Thus, 95 to 97 percent of the liquid was probably vented because the cumulates above in the Banded Series display a different crystallization order than in the Ultramafic Series. Given the dimensions and an estimate of the fraction of liquid vented, we arrive at the volume extruded. Recall this estimate is for only about 20 percent of the Complex, we do not yet have a method to estimate the volume for the rest of the Stillwater. We find no trace of the basalt that almost certainly vented to the surface 2.7 billion years ago. In addition, there are no known flood basalt provinces that are boninitic as the parent composition of the Stillwater Complex was.
