AB - ABSTRACT: The fault-bounded Bolivar Ultramafic Complex (BUC) on the eastern fringes of the Western Cordillera of Colombia was tectonically accreted onto the western coast of South America in the late Cretaceous-early Tertiary, along with pillow basalts of the Caribbean-Colombian Oceanic Plateau (CCOP). The complex consists of a lower sequence of ultramafic cumulates, successively overlain by layered and isotropic gabbroic rocks. The gabbros grade into, and are intruded by, mafic pegmatites that consist of large magnesiohornblende and plagioclase crystals. These pegmatites yield a weighted mean (super 40) Ar- (super 39) Ar step-heating age of 90.5+ or -0.9 Ma and thus coincide with the timing of peak CCOP volcanism. The chemistry of the BUC is not consistent with a subduction-related origin. However, the similarity in Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopes between the CCOP and the BUC, in conjunction with their indistinguishable ages, suggests that the BUC is an integral part of the plume-derived CCOP. The parental magmas of the Bolivar complex were probably hydrous picrites that underwent 20-30% crystallization. The residual magmas from this fractionation contained approximately 7.0 wt% MgO and enough water to permit fractionation of magnesiohorn-blende (and bytownite) on the sidewalls of veins, forming hornblende-rich pegmatites. As the residual magmas migrated upwards through the complex, they became more evolved and, thus, fractionated less magnesiohornblende along with a greater proportion of more sodic plagioclase. At the highest preserved levels of the complex the pegmatites consist predominantly of andesine plagioclase with quartz and biotite. During crystallization of the pegmatites some of the residual magma was tapped or erupted and intruded at higher levels to form breccias and dykes that are exposed nearby at Vijes. Our calculations suggest that the BUC resulted from melting of a mantle plume source region that contained at least 400 ppm H (sub 2) O. We propose that mantle plumes, as well as being heterogeneous in terms of radiogenic isotopes and trace elements, are also heterogeneous with regard to their water content, and so can have portions that are more hydrous than others. This has fundamental implications for mantle rheology and the environmental impact of Large Igneous Province eruptions.

AB - ABSTRACT: The seismic strain rates and configuration in the northern Andes are estimated by summing the components of the Centroid Moment Tensor (CMT) solutions for earthquakes with M (sub w) >5.0 and are compared with those predicted by various models of relative plate motions and GPS data. Moment tensor components are summed linearly in four different regions with similar seismotectonics to infer changes in the regional strain patterns along the northern Andes and to retrieve strain rates and relative plate velocities between this region and the stable South American plate. The Andean seismic strain rates are the result of east-southeast-directed contraction due to the collision of the Nazca and Caribbean plates with the South American plate and the collision of the Panama block against central Colombia, with a component of northeast-directed motion due to the obliquity of the eastern boundary of the northern Andes with respect to the boundary of the Nazca and Caribbean plates, with the South American plate along the Colombia trench and the Southern Caribbean Deformation zone, respectively, where the convergence is normal. The present motion of the Central Andes towards the northeast does not require the plate boundary between the Caribbean and South American plates to be along the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia and the Bocono Fault in Venezuela. The seismic moment rates for the northern Andes are small compared to the total expected seismic strain rates calculated from plate motion models and GPS data, suggesting that most of the strain is released aseismically and that is accommodated by folding, fault creeping, rigid block translation or other undetermined processes. Finally, a three-dimensional model of the CMT solutions and other seismicity in northwestern South America is presented, where major subducting slabs, including the Peru flat-slab and the Ecuador and Central Colombia segments of the Nazca and Caribbean plates, become more evident and easier to interpret. The Caribbean plate is interpreted to culminate at the location of the Bucaramanga "nest" offering an explanation to this swarm of seismicity in the northern Andes.

AB - ABSTRACT: We propose to explain the origin of the double trend in seismicity of the Macas swarm in the Subandean Cordillera of Cutucu (Ecuador) and characterize the corresponding active deformation of that region. For that purpose, seismological and geological data have been used, with the deployment of a temporary seismological array, with geological field observations and image processing. We found that some earthquakes are aligned on a well known NNE-SSW trend corresponding to the orientation of the nodal planes of the reverse focal mechanism of the M (sub w) = 7.0 1995 Macas earthquake as for its aftershocks. Nevertheless, many smaller events are aligned on an unexpected NNW-SSE trend inside the Cutucu Cordillera. We interpret these two orientations of the Macas swarm as linked to Subandean basement thrusts inherited from the inversion tectonics of a NNE-SSW trending Triassic-Jurassic rift, which has been uplifted and partly extruded in the Cutucu Cordillera. The present partitioning of this part of the Subandean deformation is controlled by pre-existing NNE-SSW to NNW-SSE Triassic-Jurassic normal faults that have been subsequently compressed-transpressed and reactivated into reverse faults. Major boundary faults of the rift were NNE-SSW oriented and correspond now to some main Subandean thrusts as confirms the focal mechanism of the 1995 main shock located on the eastern border (Morona frontal thrust) and the orientation of its aftershocks. In the Cutucu Cordillera, the double orientation of present swarm can be interpreted as the result of accommodation of deformation along NNW-SSE pre-existing faults inside the inverted rift system, linked to the motion of the Morona frontal NNE-SSW thrust.

AB - ABSTRACT: A combined gravimetric and geochronological interpretation of the Parguaza intrusion in the Guayana shield, southwestern Venezuela, indicates that there is a pattern of inverse cooling within this pluton. Based on a positive correlation between Rb/Sr whole rock apparent ages and residual Bouguer anomaly, density contrasts over the Parguaza intrusion are linked to temperature and crystallization of mineral phases. This hypothesis is supported by density measurements on hand samples and by independent geochemical evidence. A simple 2D gravity model is constrained by surface geology, Rb/Sr apparent ages (whole rock) and residual Bouguer anomalies. Gravimetric modeling implies a model of horsts and grabens that accounts for inverse zoning of the intrusion as a result of geological and age contrasts across the faults.
