AB - ABSTRACT: The Lower Magdalena Valley of northern Colombia can be subdivided into two very distinct structural provinces separated by the Romeral fault system. The Sinu-San Jacinto Province, located west of the Romeral fault, is a Paleocene to Oligocene accretionary wedge floored by Cretaceous oceanic crust. The Plato-San Jorge Basin is a back-arc basin filled by Oligocene to Pliocene sediments. The basin is structured into several northwest-southeast-trending structural highs and lows controlled by transtensional and transpressional faults that evolved through geologic time. The basement of the Plato-San Jorge Basin is a Paleozoic metamorphosed oceanic crust. Paleocene-Eocene siliciclastic series including shale, sandstone, and mostly conglomerate and breccia unconformably overlie the basement close to the Romeral fault. A widespread deltaic sandy section referred to as Cienaga de Oro Formation overlies this section. The Cienaga de Oro sandstone (locally, "Cicuco Limestone") represents the main reservoir of the area and is overlain by deep-water shale with interbedded sandstone (i.e., Porquero Formation). The Sinu-San Jacinto area is the onshore part of the northern Colombia accretionary prism, related to the subduction of the Caribbean Plate underneath the South American Plate. The onshore part of the wedge is dominated by west-vergent imbricates involving Cretaceous oceanic crust (Cretaceous ophiolitic series)and Cretaceous to Oligocene sediments. The Cretaceous sedimentary section (i.e., Cansona Formation) consists of organic-rich shale, limestone, and chert. The Paleocene-Eocene section consists of deep-water shale and turbiditic sandstone, except in the Tolu area where it is made up of shallow-water sandstone, conglomerate, and reefal limestone (La Risa Reef). The Miocene section is composed mostly of flyschtype deposits (i.e., Floresanto Flysch), which can be reservoir rock. Seismic and geologic data suggest that the Romeral fault is a major strike-slip fault that offsets the obduction suture.

AB - ABSTRACT: Major oil discoveries in the foothills of the Venezuelan and Colombian Andes have recently focused the interest of exploration companies toward sub-Andean basins. Seismic, well, and core data from the El Furrial (Venezuela) and Cusiana (Colombia) productive fields have been integrated herein with other regional information to document the evolution of the thrust belt and the history of the petroleum systems, and to propose practical guidelines for prediction of sandstone reservoir quality in such a complex geodynamic environment. Although timing of deformation is slightly different in these areas of eastern Venezuela and Colombia, sedimentary and tectonic burial of the foreland autochthon in both regions led to the maturation of prolific Cretaceous marine source rocks, resulting in successive and diachronous hydrocarbon migration and trapping episodes. Early sedimentary burial at the current location of the Serrania del Interior (Venezuela) and the Eastern Cordillera (Colombia) resulted in long-range migration of early-generated hydrocarbons toward the foreland, forming the large accumulation of hydrocarbon along the Faja Petrolifera (Eastern Venezuela). Early entrapped hydrocarbons also have been preserved in pre-Andean prospects of the Andean foothills, as evidenced by the complex charge history of the Cusiana field. However, wide areas of source rocks in the Andean foothills and adjacent foreland reached the oil window only during the late Neogene and Pliocene-Quaternary, when maximum burial was attained. This produced a second migration episode, coeval with the growth of frontal anticlinal prospects. The main reservoir in Cusiana is fluvial sandstone of the Mirador Formation (Eocene); in El Furrial, it is sandstone of the Naricual-Merecure Formation (Oligocene). Pressure solution and quartz cementation decreased permeability of these sandstones. Results of studies of the anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility (AMS), coupled with studies of fluid inclusions in quartz overgrowths and thermal modeling, demonstrate that sandstone reservoirs of these oil fields were compacted both vertically, by the load of the synflexural sequence, and horizontally, by tectonic stress (layer-parallel shortening) prior to being tectonically emplaced into the allochthon. Layer-parallel shortening by pressure solution is a major source of silica in the underthrust foreland. Venezuelan and Colombian sandstones still have reasonably good reservoir characteristics, although they have been buried to great depths. Overpressure that developed in these reservoirs as a result of rapid foredeep sedimentation probably caused a delay in compaction. Early carbonate cements also may have contributed locally to prevent compaction until secondary porosity developed as a result of dissolution of this early diagenetic phase. Finally, development of structural closures and hydrocarbon trapping has resulted progressively in the shutting down of the hydraulic system, preventing the transport of exotic silica by regional fluid flow.

AB - ABSTRACT: This paper synthesizes technical, commercial, and strategic issues regarding the petroleum systems and exploration of the northwest corner of South America in three parts: a technical analysis of the presence and distribution of the hydrocarbon systems; analysis of the areas with the largest remaining potential; and Colombia's exploration strategy in relation to its geology and potential. The technical portion outlines, with the use of countrywide paleogeographic maps, the main reasons for the presence and distribution of hydrocarbons in the region. Regional petroleum systems are described using a process and genesis methodology. The proposed hypothesis for source-rock quality and distribution combines regional plate tectonics with the formation of a large igneous province, global warming, increased upwelling, widespread anoxia-dysoxia, and sea-level rise. The hypothesis for reservoir distribution and quality comprises details of a regional orogenic event that affected the northwest margin of South America. The distribution of different reservoir qualities is determined by the erosion of an elongated mountain belt formed by this orogeny, the associated synorogenic sedimentation, and the evolution of a closing foreland basin that received sediments from the west from a mountain chain with varied basement stratigraphy, and from the east, sediments from the Guyana Shield. The explanation for regional seal deposition lies in the tectonic extension and foundering of large portions of Colombia and western Venezuela, the regional subsidence associated with diminished plate-tectonic convergence, and the associated increase of accommodation space. The inversion of the Eastern Cordillera and the development of doubly verging thrust belts bounding the mountain belt explain the formation of most traps. Adjacent forelands and foredeeps to the mountain belt and thick molasse packages combined with tectonic burial of the source rock explain generation and migration patterns. This paper also considers where the largest volumes of hydrocarbons will be found in the future, based on technical issues, and on the exploration history of different play areas in Colombia.

AB - ABSTRACT: Volcanic, sedimentary, and granitic plutonic rocks that are part of the early Mesozoic Cordilleran continental magmatic arc are exposed in a belt from the southwestern United States to Guatemala. In the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Zacatecas, and San Luis Potosi, these rocks form a discontinuous southeast-trending belt across north-central Mexico. Whole-rock geochemical analyses of volcanic and intrusive rocks in north-central Mexico indicate a calc-alkaline suite formed in this continental volcanic arc along the convergent margin of western North America. Paleomagnetism, field relations, and isotopic ages ( (super 40) Ar/ (super 39) Ar, K-Ar, Rb-Sr, and U-Pb) of 73 volcanic and intrusive rocks document the Late Triassic-Middle Jurassic age of the arc. In the region, isotopic ages commonly are reset, apparently because of thermotectonic events during the "Laramide" orogeny that led to the development of the Sierra Madre Oriental fold and thrust belt and to deep burial of the arc rocks. Available evidence suggests that the arc underwent two main phases of subsidence. One phase of extensional subsidence created intra-arc basins and a peak of volcanism throughout the arc in the Early-Middle Jurassic. A second phase began in the Oxfordian, with subsidence and initial deposition of the Zuloaga and La Gloria Formations. Continued sedimentation during this phase led to accumulation of 5-7 km of strata above the arc, as Cretaceous seas transgressed westward over inland Mexico. The similarities in age, depositional environment, clastic composition, magma types, and geochemical affinity and, more importantly, the tectonic settings that gave rise to the Nazas Formation in Mexico and La Quinta and Giron formations in Venezuela and Colombia suggest that these two volcanic-sedimentary sequences, now hundred of kilometers apart, were once part of the Late Triassic-Jurassic continental magmatic arc. This arc extended from Alaska to South America and evolved during simultaneous subduction along the western margin of Pangea, rifting in the Caribbean-Gulf of Mexico region, and associated large-scale transpressive activity.

AB - ABSTRACT: Lycopsis longirostris, a middle Miocene Colombian borhyaenoid, is compared functionally with early Miocene borhyaenoids from Patagonia and the Tasmanian thylacine Thylacinus cynocephalus, the largest Recent marsupial carnivore. The postcranium of Lycopsis shows a mosaic of features. Although several features characterizing the long bones are consistent with a primarily terrestrial mode of life (e.g., a straight ulna and tibia, a semi-digitigrade forefoot), other features like the development of mm. spinati, pectoralis and biceps and the pseudo-opposable pollex indicate that the forelimb had manipulative and grasping abilities. On the hindlimb, the poorly stabilized lower ankle joint, the short metatarsals, and the well-developed hallux also preclude fast running. When compared to three early Miocene borhyaenoids, Prothylacinus patagonicus, Cladosictis patagonica, and Borhyaena tuberata, which form a morphological gradient from the most arboreally-adapted taxon to an incipient cursorial one, Lycopsis is placed between Cladosictis and Borhyaena. Lycopsis was more likely an ambush hunter than a pounce-pursuit predator, stalking small-to medium-sized prey.

AB - ABSTRACT: This thesis consists of seven papers which are divided into three parts. Part I includes two papers dealing with earthquake location and crustal attenuation in Colombia. The main achievements are the elaboration of the crustal model for the region, which serves as a velocity model for earthquake location and starting model for future 3D tomographic studies, and the evaluation of crustal attenuation through a Q (sub Lg) tomography. The lateral variations in Q (sub Lg) were found to be well correlated with the tectonics, with a stronger attenuation in the volcanic belts. Part II consists of three papers that investigate the integration and influence of geologic and paleoseismic data in seismic hazard analysis for three different regions. The first of these papers aims to compare and evaluate the seismic hazard scenario of Istanbul (Turkey) by using pure probabilistic and pure characteristic earthquake occurrence models. Also a comparison between different attenuation relationships is done. The second paper of part II deals with the seismic hazard evaluation in the Lower Rhine Graben. This paper shows the strong influence of fault geometry and fault segmentation in the spatial distribution of peak ground acceleration (PGA). The third paper of part II describes the integration of geologic and paleoseismic data in seismic hazard analysis for the Catalan Coastal Ranges, Spain. This paper shows the influence of recurrence time and time elapsed since the last occurrence of characteristic earthquakes through the use of different models. The tow papers of Part III investigate and describe the potential use of microtremors, weak and strong motion data as tools for evaluating local site conditions in two Colombian cities, Pereira and Bogota. The first paper of part III shows that the predominant period of vibration for soft soils in Pereira can be well estimated using either microtremors, weak or strong motion. In all the cases the obtained periods are very similar. In the last part of the paper, a zonation map based on dominant soil periods of Pereira is proposed. The second paper highlights the new accelerograph network for Bogota, capital of Colombia. The new accelerograph network in the near future may provide good data for assessing a realistic seismic risk scenario for Bogota.

AB - ABSTRACT: A dynamic source model is presented, in which a three-dimensional crack containing a viscous compressible fluid is excited into resonance by an impulsive pressure transient applied to a small area DS of the crack wall. The source behavior depends critically on two dimensionless parameters called the crack stiffness, C = (k/u)(L/d), and viscous damping loss, F = (12nL)/(pd2a), where k is the bulk modulus, n the viscosity, and p the density of the fluid, u is the rigidity, and a the compressional velocity of the solid, L is the crack length, and d the crack thickness. The first parameter characterizes the ability of the crack to vibrate and distinguishes the spectral signature of the source, while the second quantifies the effect of fluid viscosity on the duration of resonance. The dynamic motion of the crack is marked by distinct time scales representing the duration of the impulsive transient and the periods of acoustic resonance in the lateral and longitudinal dimensions of the source. In this model, the mechanism responsible for the excitation of the crack into resonance is the brittle failure of rock caused by excess fluid pressure. The rupture has a duration proportional to the area DS of crack expansion, and the resonant periods are proportional to the crack stiffness and to the width and length of the crack. These periods are usually much greater than the duration of brittle failure. Resonance is sustained by a very slow wave trapped in the fluid-filled crack. This guided wave, called the crack wave, is similar to the tube wave propagating in a fluid-filled borehole; it is dispersive, showing a phase velocity that decreases with increasing wavelength, and its wave speed is always lower than the acoustic velocity of the fluid, decreasing rapidly as the crack stiffness increases. The source spectrum shows many sharp peaks characterizing the individual modes of vibration of the crack; the variation of spectral shape, both in the number and width of peaks is surprisingly complex, reflecting the interference between the lateral and longitudinal modes of resonance, as well as nodes for these modes. The energy loss by radiation is stronger for high frequencies, resulting in a progressive enrichment of the crack response in lower frequencies over the duration of resonance. These source characteristics translate into a far-field signature that is marked by a high-frequency content near its onset, and dominated by a longer-period component in its coda. The source duration shows a strong dependence on the fluid viscosity and associated viscous damping at the crack wall. The far-field signature of the source is in harmony with that displayed by long-period events observed at Kilauea, Hawaii, Mount St. Helens, Washington, Nevado del Ruiz, Colombia, and in hydrofracture experiments conducted at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratories, New Mexico. The very low velocity which is possible in a crack with high stiffness (C 100) also provides an attractive explanation for very long-period tremor, such as Type 2 tremor observed at Aso volcano.
