AB - ABSTRACT: Observed long-period P-waves compared with synthetic waveforms. Fault-plane solutions show reverse faulting, crustal shortening, probably in response to subduction of the Nazca Plate. Balance between compressive stress applied to the Andes in the direction of subduction, which causes thrust faulting in the sub-Andes, and the gravitational body forces acting on the topographically higher parts and the crustal root of the Andes, which may cause normal faulting at high elevation.--Modified journal abstract.

AB - ABSTRACT: The new Medellin International Airport in Colombia is under construction, and at present earthmoving works have just been completed. It required excavating 14.6 million m (super 3) of earth and placing 8.3 million m (super 3) of fill with a water content high above optimum, and mostly during three dry seasons about 4 months long each. The airport is located on top of deep highly compressible residual soils. These conditions caused high pore pressure generation, slope failures and excessive compression of the fills, which made necessary unconventional approaches in dealing with these problems.--Journal abstract.
