AB - ABSTRACT: Numerous coal beds of economic importance are intercalated in the Guaduas formation (upper Cretaceous-Eocene) of the San Jorge and Llano de Animas districts, Zipaquira, Colombia. Anthracite seams are present in the Guadalupe formation (upper Cretaceous) and uncommercial bituminous strata occur in the Villeta formation (lower Cretaceous). Reserves of the principal seam in the Guaduas formation are estimated at 1,900,000 tons.

AB - ABSTRACT: An account of the geology of the site of the proposed hydroelectric plant on the Anchicaya river, Cauca valley, Colombia. The area is composed essentially of a tonalite intrusion, probably related to Cretaceous-Tertiary magmatic activity of the western Andes, and Precambrian-Paleozoic schists and quartzites. The igneous rock is highly resistant and impermeable, affording a suitable site for the dam and reservoir; the metamorphic rocks are impermeable, but their structure makes them less suitable for the construction of the proposed tunnels.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Rektor ore body on the east slope of Luossavaara in the Kiruna district, northern Sweden, is a mixed magnetite-hematite ore with abundant apatite, intercalated between a quartz-bearing porphyry (below) and a hydrothermally altered porphyry (above), believed originally to have been a lava flow. The ore is considered magmatic in origin and to have been intruded in the late stages of the hydrothermal processes which caused alteration.

AB - ABSTRACT: The southern Pacific coast region of Colombia comprises a Tertiary sedimentary basin, and igneous and metamorphic masses, presumably Mesozoic in age, of the front ranges of the Cordillera Occidental. The two units are separated by an extensive fault. Pliocene and Miocene beds total some 5,000 meters in thickness and are underlain by Oligocene and possibly Eocene strata. Cretaceous beds are not known, but are believed to occur below the Tertiary.

AB - ABSTRACT: "The Hannatoma fauna is an assemblage of marine and brackish-water mollusks present in Tertiary strata at several widespread points in northwestern South America. The distinctiveness and wide geographic range of the fauna combine to make it important in stratigraphic correlation, but its value in this respect has been impaired by difference of opinion as to whether its age is middle Oligocene, as originally claimed, or upper Eocene. The seven papers in this symposium comprise the response to a circular requesting current opinions as to the age of the Hannatoma fauna. Different aspects of the age-relationships of associated mollusks and Foraminifera in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru are discussed. The authors conclude that the Hannatoma fauna occurs mainly in upper Eocene but locally in Oligocene beds.".
