AB - ABSTRACT: Strontium, oxygen, and carbon isotope compositions of well-preserved mollusks (bivalves) indicate a dominantly freshwater depositional setting for the lower Miocene-upper Miocene Pebas Formation in Western Amazonia. Molluscan (super 87) Sr/ (super 86) Sr ratios identify different freshwater sources. Andean runoff was the dominant water source in Miocene Western Amazonia, though there was occasional influx of waters from cratonic catchments. At only one stratigraphic level, isotope signals indicate increased (mesohaline) aquatic salinities, in concert with a clearly more saline molluscan faunal assemblage. Strontium isotope-based salinity estimates are surprisingly low when compared to other paleosalinity estimates based on the interpretation of (ichno)faunal assemblages and sedimentological structures. We propose that these seemingly contrasting observations can be unified if Miocene Western Amazonia was occupied by a long-lived (lacustrine) wetland system with a restricted connection, via the Los Llanos Basin, to the Caribbean Sea. Abundant runoff supplied fresh water to this system, which effectively blocked the influx of saline waters through the restricted marine connection to the north. Much like modern Lake Maracaibo, such a system could have been the site of microtidal currents and thus could have hosted brackish-water fauna in a dominantly freshwater depositional system.

AB - ABSTRACT: By screenwashing sedimentary rocks from three localities in the middle Miocene Villavieja Formation, Rio Magdalena valley, Huila Department, Colombia, we collected several fossils that add to the knowledge of bats in the ca. 12-13 million-year-old La Venta fauna. The new specimens represent an emballonurid, a noctilionid, three phyllostomids, a thyropterid, three molossids, and a probable vespertilionid, and they came from a level (Monkey Beds) bracketed by dates of 12.5 million and 12.2 million years. The first known upper molars of Notonycteris magdalenensis reaffirm this species' close relationship with Vampyrum and Chrotopterus, as does a new species of Notonycteris based on two lower molars and characterized by smaller size than N. magdalenensis. Two upper molars of a primitive nectar-feeding bat represent another new taxon of Phyllostomidae (Glossophaginae), a new genus and species which provides the only Tertiary record for this group. An additional but not yet identifiable molossid adds to the bat list, and an unidentified probable vespertilionid is the first of its family recorded in the fauna. The La Venta fauna now includes 14 species of bats, several of which are indeterminate.

AB - ABSTRACT: In the northern part of the middle Magdalena river valley and in the Santander tablelands, there are volcanic rocks, whose relation with the Cretaceous sediments has not been clearly understood. In some sectors they have been mistaken Cenozoic sediments. In other places, they have been mapped as volcanic rocks of Jura-triassic age or they are without age estimates and in some sector of the cordilleran region in Santander, they received names of Cretaceous sedimentary formations.

AB - ABSTRACT: The first outlines of the Isthmus of Panama began in the middle Miocene. Its formation had impacts on paleography. The elevation of the Cordillera Oriental, which began between 12.9 and 11.8 million years ago, had its maximum intensity between 5 and 2.5 million years ago, causing changes in the hydrographic networks of the Amazon, Orinoco and Magdalena rivers. The record of a cold epoch in the Sabana de Bogota, dated at 2.7 million years ago, may correspond to a glacial stage of the upper Pliocene. The formation of the Itsthmus led to the great faunal exchange between North and South America. During the Pleistocene, along the Caribbean coasts of Colombia, a series of coral reefs, dated between 300,000 and 124,000 years, formed.

AB - ABSTRACT: An analysis of the stratigraphy and radiocarbon datings of an excavation in the El Totumo site (Tocaima, Cundinamarca, Colombia), where bones of Mastodon and Megatherium were found associated with stone artifacts of the El Abra type, brings to the conclusion that man and megafauna still cohabited in the area between 6000 and 5000 years before present. A stone statue of the early San Agustin Culture (perhaps of the ninth century before Christ), shows a face or mask that seems to represent an elephant; this may mean that they had a knowledge of the existence of Mastodons still in that time, or of an ancestral memory (cultural/tradition) of an earlier period.
