AB - ABSTRACT: The surface geological exploration complemented with core drilling, carried out during 1998 by INGEOMINAS on the municipalities of El Tambo and Patia, as well as the data obtained during the exploration in 1994, have permitted to collect the information needed for the first evaluation of coal resources on the area of El Hoyo-Quilcace, El Vergel y Yeguas-Limoncito. Using the concepts, classification criteria and dispositions of the Classification of Coal Resources and Reserves System by ECOCARBON, were calculated and ordinate on categories the coal volumes. The total figures of the basic reserves and resources, calculated on the whole referred sectors are: 1.967.061 Tons Measured reserves, 5.965.533 Tons Indicated reserves, 12.268.418 Tons Inferred reserves, 4.415.939 Tons Measured resources, 13.099.071 Tons Indicated resources, 18.455.711 Tons Inferred resources and run out of reserves do not exist The global results of coal quality on the area of El Hoyo-Limoncito, indicate a calorific power between 6858 and 7354 cal/gr. on moisture base free of mineral material; An ash content between 8.12 and 18.04% on dry base and a total sulfur content between 0.89 and 2.32 % on dry base; all of this associated with ASTM classification, as bituminous coals high in volatiles C and D, permit to assign a technological use as thermic Coals.

AB - ABSTRACT: The limestone mine "El Toro" of Cementos El Cairo S.A. is located on western flank of the Cental Cordillera, formed by metamorphic rocks that had suffered many tectonic events; for this, they show a lot of structures such as schistocity, faults, joints, and caves. During many years the quarry was exploited by open pit mining and since the 90's get began the underground exploitation due technical problems produced by the structural disposition of mineral body in front of the topographic conditions. As an alternative method of exploitation "Sublevel Stoping" was selected, with 65 m high, 20 m wide and 120 m long stopes; 10 m thick vertical pillars and 16 m thick horizontal pillars between explotation blocks. This paper presents a small description of mine operation where this method is applied, as well as the more representatives indexes obtained during the works.

AB - ABSTRACT: The seismic activity registered by the Red Sismologica Nacional de Colombia (RSNC) from the beginning of its operation in the middle of 1993, have shown some variations related with the known seismicity before its installation. In this paper deductions based on data from the colombian seismic catalog (INGEOMINAS, 1995) from 1566 to 1993, is compared with those based on earthquakes registered by the RSNC from June 1993 to October 1999. The analysis shows an important superficial activity, registered by the RSNC, mostly associated with active geological faults, which do not appear in the colombian catalog. Furthermore, there are differences related with the location of the principal colombian seismic sources.

AB - ABSTRACT: The riparian zone of Caucasia and its associated village Puerto Espana in Antioquia are being affected by strong erosive processes in the main channel of Cauca River in response to human actions over the river system along time, in the vicinity of the main town. In order to present solutions for the settled community under flood hazard, geomorphologic and hydraulic analysis of the study reach as well of considerations of social aspects were made. As a result of the investigations, the high instability of the Cauca River channel, between Carlos Lleras Restrepo Bridge an Severa Island, is mainly due to action as: closure of secondary channels for expanding the urban area, occupation of the floodplain by urbanizations and houses without meeting the minimum requirements of riparian space (in both horizontal and vertical planes), revetments of parts of the channel banks contracting the channel width, mining upstream of the study reach decreasing the transport capacity of the river. The proposed solution involves relocation of Puerto Espana Village and margin protection structures to prevent a change of the main channel course.

AB - ABSTRACT: This integrated reservoir study of upper Cretaceous to upper Eocene reservoirs in Apiay field documents more than 57 MM.S.TB (million stock tank barrels) of unrecovered mobile oil in a zone (K1 operational unit) which contains 87.5 MM.S.TB of OOIP (original oil in place). This study proposes new recompletions and new targeted infill wells that will be necessary to produce the remaining oil in this highly prospective interval. Apiay field, located in southwest Llanos Basin in Colombia, produces from an upper Cretaceous to upper Eocene fluvial and transitional marine system. The Apiay structure contains reserves in upper Cretaceous to lower Tertiary strata, although since its discovery in 1981, production has come exclusively from the massive fluvial sandstones of the K2 operational unit. A high production decline and the necessity of finding additional reserves from uncharacterized reservoirs provide the justification for developing a multidisciplinary approach to understand and predict facies architecture in the K1 operational unit and to evaluate its potential for additional oil. The K1 operational unit was divided into six genetic units from detailed stratigraphic correlation and vertical seismic resolution. Interpretation of facies distribution was carried out and integrated with well log, core, seismic amplitude, petrophysical, and production behavior analyses. Facies distribution demonstrates that the lower K1 operational unit was deposited in a fluvial-dominated delta during the Cretaceous transgression. The middle K1 operational unit formed in a mesotidal shorezone system which evolved into a fluvial-dominated deltaic system in the middle part. Finally, the upper K1 operational unit was discordantly deposited above the upper Cretaceous and records braided fluvial stream sedimentation in the late Eocene.

AB - ABSTRACT: Interpretation of seismic profiles, earthquake fault-plane solutions, radar images, and geometry of structures suggests that two different structural styles are viable alternatives for the Putumayo basin in Colombia. An eastern domain, varying in width from 4 to 13 km, might be characterized by strike-slip faulting parallel to the Andes because it exhibits similar structures to those formed in restraining bend settings, an example is the Orito fold, the largest known oil field in the basin. Correlation of seismic reflections with wells into the Orito fold and foreland indicates a post-Miocene age for this structure. Previous interpretations of contractional dip-slip movement on Andes-parallel structures, as proposed by Portilla (1991) with faults involving basement, are also viable. A 15 km-width western domain is interpreted as a region of foreland-dipping rocks uplifted above their regional level by wedging of pre-Cretaceous (?) rocks beneath known Jurassic rocks. Above the Jurassic rocks thin-skinned deformation occurs inside of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic sedimentary cover, also in the form of wedging. Mesozoic and Paleozoic (?) rocks were injected into of a late Cretaceous-early Paleocene unit composed of shale. The western domain is truncated to the west by a major reverse fault that places Paleozoic rocks over Mesozoic and Cenozoic rocks.

AB - ABSTRACT: An articulated assemblage of chondrichthyan teeth remain, previously described by Larrazet (1886) as selachian dermal scutes from the Carboniferous of New Granada, is re-described as a Ptychodus sp. and turns out to be Cretaceous in age, presumably from the La Luna Formation of Colombia or Venezuela. This Ptychodus species seems to differ from all the other known prychodontids by its homodontous dentition, tooth morphology and ornamentation, however we prefer not to erect a new taxon here until tooth morphology morphoclines become better known and help in the understanding of the phylogenetic relationships among chondrichthyans.

AB - ABSTRACT: The 364 sheet--Timbio--is located in southern Popayan, Cauca Department, and geographically comprises parts of the Central and Western Cordilleras, and the Patia Valley. Paleozoic rocks crop out in the Central Cordillera. Basically they are metamorphic rocks of the amphibole-epidote and green schist facies, and the Bellones metagranitoid that exhibits cataclastic metamorphism. Basic rocks, sedimentary rocks and ophiolitic complexes are the Mesozoic rocks that outcrop in the studied area. Both Paleozoic and Mesozoic bodies appear as tectonic blocks. Mineralogical, lithological and tectonic characteristics of Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks indicate an oceanic environment of deposition for these rocks, specially the latter. Cenozoic rocks, wich occur in the inter-cordilleran depression, consist of three sequences: a turbiditic (Pena Morada Formation), a molassic (Mosquera and Esmita Formations), and a Volcanic-Sedimentary conformed by andesitic lavas, pyroclastic flows, epiclastites and ash. Several fault-systems affect the studied area: Romeral, Cali-Patia, and a transversal one, wich goes E-W or N 60 degrees W. Some folds were mapped in cenozoic rocks. According to the geochemical distribution and interpretation of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Ni, and report values of Ag, Mo and Au, several a interesting anomalies were detected: Piedrasentada, Dominical, San Miguel, Bellones and Salao. Some of the geochemical anomalies are associated with mineralized areas in the Bellones, Piedrasentada and Dominical areas. This paper described another mined prospects as La Calixta, La Mirringa, Las Lajitas, gold placers and coal prospects of El Hoyo, Guanabanal and Baraya. The Geological History chapter covers aspects that have relation with geotectonic events that occurred in the area of work. This chapter describes the events that had occurrence since Paleozoic time to the late Cenozoic time.
