AB - ABSTRACT: Palynological and well-log analyses of Cretaceous strata from southeastern Venezuela allow the recognition of third-order eustatic cycles and are the basis for a chronostratigraphic framework with a datum approximately every 0.8 m.y. This definition permits the correlation of events in the local geologic evolution with regionally important sedimentological and tectonic events. An Early Cretaceous marine transgression reached areas north of the Andes before 113 Ma; however, according to our framework, the transgression extended into the Barinas area shortly after 98 Ma. An interval of relatively low sea level, from 95.5 Ma to 91.5 Ma, is represented by oil-bearing sandstones and dolomitic limestones. A second marine transgression reached the area at approximately 91.5 Ma and resulted in the deposition of organic-rich clastics that are correlatable with source rocks from areas to the north. A major hiatus (Santonian-Campanian) encompasses approximately 11 m.y. and probably is related to the emplacement of oceanic rocks in western Colombia. A younger major hiatus (Maastrichtian-Eocene) encompasses approximately 26 m.y. and probably is related to the emplacement of the Lara nappes in northern Venezuela. Two other minor intra-Turonian and intra-Maastrichtian hiatuses are recognized and encompass approximately 1.5 m.y. each.

AB - ABSTRACT: Pollen analysis of sediment cores from Laguna Angel (4 degrees 28'N, 70 degrees 34'W, 200m elevation) and Laguna Sardinas (4 degrees 58'N, 69 degrees 28'W, 80m a.s.l.) in the savannas of the Llanos Orientales of Colombia are presented. The pollen record of Laguna Angel includes 7 radiocarbon dates and shows the Holocene vegetation and climatic history since 10,030yr B.P. The record of Laguna Sardinas includes 7 radiocarbon dates and shows the late Glacial and Holocene history since 11,570yr B.P. Both pollen records show that the present-day savanna vegetation, dominated by grassland (Poaceae) with only few woody savanna taxa (e.g. Curatella, Bryrsonima), was present since the late Glacial, indicating dry climatic conditions with a marked dry season. Shrubs and trees of forest and/or gallery forest, e.g. Mauritia, Mauritiella, Moraceae/Urticaceae, Melastomataceae, Alchornea, and Myrtaceae are well represented during the recorded period. The proportions between forest and savanna were subject to change in the past, but also the composition of the forest and savanna ecosystems changed. Laguna Sardinas shows a greater abundance during the late Glacial/Holocene transition than today for Alchornea, especially from 10,680 to 10,070yr B.P. For this interval, synchronous to the El Abra stadial (Younger Dryas equivalent) in Colombia, more humid climatic conditions have been inferred, which are primarily the result of higher moisture levels under colder conditions. During the early and middle Holocene, from 9730 to 5260yr B.P. in Laguna Angel, and from 9390 to 6390yr B.P. in Laguna Sardinas, the maximum expansion of grassland occurred, indicating very dry climatic conditions. The following period, from 5260 to 3890yr B.P. in Laguna Angel, and from 6390 to 3680yr B.P. in Laguna Sardinas, shows a decrease of savanna herbs and an increase of forest and gallery forests, reflecting a wetter period, probably with a shorter annual dry season. In both lake records, the period after ca. 3500yr B.P. is incomplete, but is characterized by a high representation of the palm genera Mauritiella in Laguna Angel, and Mauritia in Laguna Sardinas. This marked change has been interpreted as evidence of a strong anthropogenic influence on the vegetation, but also wetter climatic conditions than during the late Glacial and early and middle Holocene periods.

AB - ABSTRACT: Strontium isotopic ratios and Sr contents of molluscs from the Miocene Pebas Formation in Colombian Amazonia indicate that the bulk of the Pebas Formation was deposited in a freshwater environment, predominantly draining the Andes, with minor contribution from the shield regions. The molluscan oxygen and carbon isotopic composition does not provide a palaeosalinity proxy, but points to a lacustrine palaeoenvironment. The faunal character confirms such an interpretation. Sr isotopic ratios further suggest that a marine incursion that reached the area was composed of a mixture of shield-derived freshwater and seawater, with a maximum salinity of about 5 psu. Faunistic components of this incursion-level support a shield-seawater mixing. The incursion most likely reached western Amazonia from the north, probably along the western Guyana shield.

AB - ABSTRACT: By using rank-order statistics, it is possible to predict the likely scale of future "extreme" volcanic events (eruptions larger than a given threshold size, or repose periods longer than a given time) on both a local and global scale. When ranked by diminishing size, the largest and most devastating volcanic eruptions in terms of volume, or consequent fatalities, can be described by power-law functions. In turn, this approach permits projection of, for example, (1) the likely size of the next volcanic eruption larger than the A.D. 1815 eruption of Tambora ( approximately 90 km (super 3) of magma); (2) the size of the next eruption of the Taupo volcano, New Zealand, that is larger than the eruption of A.D. 186 ( approximately 82 km (super 3) of tephra); and (3) the likely duration of the current repose period of the Taupo volcano (4000+ or -1200 years). This approach can also be employed on shorter time scales, for example to provide quantitative criteria to assess when a period of activity has ceased. With the establishment of procedures for making projections such as these, volcano hazard assessment may be placed onto a more rigorous and quantitative basis.

AB - ABSTRACT: The thick oceanic crust of the Caribbean plate appears to be the tectonized remnant of an eastern Pacific oceanic plateau that has been inserted between North and South America. The emplacement of the plateau into its present position has resulted in the obduction and exposure of its margins, providing an opportunity to study the age relations, internal structure and compositional features of the plateau. We present the results of (super 40) Ar- (super 39) Ar radiometric dating, major-, trace-element, and isotopic compositions of basalts from some of the exposed sections as well as drill core basalt samples from Leg 15 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project. Five widely spaced, margin sections yielded ages ranging from 91 to 88 Ma. Less well-constrained radiometric ages from the drill cores, combined with the biostratigraphic age of surrounding sediments indicate a minimum crystallization age of approximately 90 Ma in the Venezuelan Basin. The synchroneity of ages across the region is consistent with a flood basalt origin for the bulk of the Caribbean plateau (i.e., large volume, rapidly erupted, regionally extensive volcanism). The ages and compositions are also consistent with plate reconstructions that place the Caribbean plateau in the vicinity of the Galapagos hotspot at its inception. The trace-element and isotopic compositions of the approximately 90 Ma rocks indicate a depleted mantle and an enriched, plume-like mantle were involved in melting to varying degrees across the plateau. Within the same region, a volumetrically secondary, but widespread magmatic event occurred at 76 Ma, as is evident in Curacao, western Colombia, Haiti, and at DSDP Site 152/ODP Site 1001 near the Hess Escarpment. Limited trace-element data indicate that this phase of magmatism was generally more depleted than the first. We speculate that magmatism may have resulted from upwelling of mantle, still hot from the 90 Ma event, during lithospheric extension attending gravitational collapse of the plateau, and/or tectonic emplacement of the plateau between North and South America. Still younger volcanics are found in the Dominican Republic (69 Ma) and the Quepos Peninsula of Costa Rica (63 Ma). The latter occurrence conceivably formed over the Galapagos hotspot and subsequently accreted to the western edge of the plateau during subduction of the Farallon plate.
