AB - ABSTRACT: The detailed structural analysis of field geologic maps, remote sensing images and a closely spaced grid of industry 2-D seismic reflection data allowed the northern portion of the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia to be divided into seven major structural domains. The interpretation of the stratigraphic and structural relationships between Upper Jurassic syn-rift type deposits and Lower Cretaceous post-rift sedimtary rocks, allowed to interpret these domains as the result of inversion of Jurassic rift basins and half grabens during the Tertiary. A more detailed geologic analysis on the eastern margin of the northern portion of the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia lend new insight into the extent, style, and sequence of thrusts, and timing of deformation within this fold belt. At least three major deformation events are invoked for the structures along the eastern margin of the northern portion of the Eastern Cordillera. A first event is interpreted to have occurred during the Oligocene, forming a southeast-vergent imbricate fan. This imbricate fan was eroded and covered by middle-late Oligocene deposits forming a major angular unconformity. A subsequent contractile event in Miocene-Pliocene time reactivated pre-existing thrust faults and created new ones that folded those formed during the earlier event. Thrust faults produced in this later shortening event offset the angular unconformity. A more recent tectonic event has folded all the structures from the previous events. The thin-skinned thrust faults of the eastern margin of the Eastern Cordillera can be linked to the inversion of Jurassic-early Cretaceous age extensional faults since the Oligocene, which are still active.

AB - ABSTRACT: In active volcanic environments magmatic water may accumulate in the volcanic-hosted geothermal systems, or, more rarely may reach the surface along deep fractures inside the volcano crater. Knowledge of magmatic contribution to emerging fluids in volcanic active areas is critical to understanding the chemical evolution of the magma, the conditions in which it exists in the crust, and the mechanisms by which it erupts in the crust. The source of volatiles (especially water) is also of interest when eruptions are driven by the expansion of hydrothermal fluids against atmospheric pressure, without the involvement of fresh magma ("hydrothermal" or "phreatomagmatic" eruptions). In both cases the occurrence of volcanic and/or phreatic activities is likely to be preceded by substantial isotopic and chemical changes in the crater fumarolic systems. H and O isotopic composition of condensed water from crater fumaroles appear to be able to give strong evidence for the existence of magmatic waters in the high-temperature manifestations of the volcanic systems. Isotopic data and specific hydrological models from seven different volcanic systems (Galeras Volcano, Colombia, Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii, Kudryvy Volcano, Kuril volcanic arc, Mount Saint Helens, USA; Guagua Pichincha, Ecuador; Vulcano island, Italy; the Aegean volcanic arc, Greece) are discussed in order to highlight the possibility to use those isotopic parameters in the assessment of the environmental risks of an active volcanic area.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Oligocene-Lower Miocene Cienaga de Oro Formation is the main exploratory target at the Magangue arch, one of the tectonic elements of the Lower Magdalena Province. More than 400 ft of conglomeratic to fine grained sandstones deposited under deltaic conditions lie unconformably over igneous basement, conforming a very complex unit which contains more than 200 proved gigas of dry gas in the study area. Two-dimensional seismic, cores, well logs and production data were integrated to carry out a geologic characterization of the area. At least two seismic surfaces were identified into the Cienaga de Oro Formation and calibrated with well logs. Geological maps of these surfaces allowed the reconstruction of the paleogeography of this part of the basin during Oligocene-Lower Miocene time. Fan Delta geometries associated to lower areas of the basement and marked by the seismic surfaces mentioned above, show a general east-west trending. Gas production reported from some of those deltaic environments drives to consider additional drilling along several untested areas.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Catatumbo Basin covers an area of 9,000 square kilometers, has a thick sedimentary fill of about 15,000 feet and forms the southwestern extension of the Maracaibo Basin, one of the most prolific hydrocarbon producing basins in the world. The Mesozoic and Cenozoic evolutionary history of the basin is tied intimately to that of the Maracaibo Basin. Started from extensional setting during Triassic-Jurassic to foreland stage during the Cretaceous-Tertiary time. The Catatumbo Basin is the second oldest hydrocarbon-producing area in Colombia. Since early century there has been nearly continuous exploration activity in the Catatumbo Basin resulting in the discovery of eleven oil and gas fields (500 MMBOE), in a wide variety of structural and stratigraphic traps. The produced zones are structural and stratigraphically complex and include Cretaceous siliciclastics and fractured carbonates and clastic fluvio-deltaic Tertiary deposits. The type of oil vary from asphaltic to paraffinic, with gravities ranging from 17 degrees to 55 degrees API. The abundance of hydrocarbon resources in the Catatumbo Basin is a consequence of good to excellent, mature to over mature oil source rocks in the Cretaceous La Luna and Cogollo Formations. Recent exploration efforts including an integrated geological and geophysical study and geochemical analysis allow us to propose new play concepts, define the petroleum systems and delineate primary exploration play fairways of Catatumbo Basin. The major play types include: triangular zones, subthrust structures, and structural closures related to inverse structures and normal faults, in addition to stratigraphic traps, with significant hydrocarbon potential. Primary exploration targets include naturally fractured reservoirs sealed by shales in different levels of the section. Source rocks for hydrocarbon include cretaceous carbonaceous shales. Play types are summarized in term of hydrocarbon play elements, and are characterized by the spatial probability of occurrence within proven, maturing, immature and frontier structural play fairways and may provide the best.

AB - ABSTRACT: The coal is an abundant fossil resource, hence the development of clean technologies that allow a future massive use of coal. Therefore, it is necessary to generate or to adapt models that facilitate the design or scale-up of gasifiers. Such models permit the study of some influences on the carbon total conversion: pressure, solid residence time and gas composition. Additionally, the yield of interesting gases such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide, dioxide carbon, methane and water vapor may be estimated using the developed model.
