AB - ABSTRACT: The way in which strands of uncertain volcanological evidence can be used for decision-making, and the weight that should be given them, is a problem requiring formulation in terms of the logical principles of Evidence Science. The basic ideas are outlined using the explosion at Galeras volcano in Colombia in January 1993 as an example. Our retrospective analysis suggests that if a robust precautionary appraisal had been made of the circumstances in which distinctive tornillo signals were detected at Galeras, those events might have been construed as stronger precursory evidence for imminent explosive activity than were the indications for quiescence, given by the absence of other warning traits. However, whilst visits to the crater might have been recognised as involving elevated risk if this form of analysis had been applied to the situation in January 1993, a traditional scientific consideration of the available information was likely to have provided a neutral assessment of short-term risk levels. We use these inferences not to criticise interpretations or decisions made at the time, but to illustrate how a structured, evidence-based analysis procedure might have provided a different perspective to that derived from the conventional scientific standpoint. We advocate a formalism that may aid such decision-making in future: graphical Bayesian Belief Networks are introduced as a tool for performing the necessary numerical procedures. With this approach, Evidence Science concepts can be incorporated rationally, efficiently and reliably into decision support during volcanic crises.

AB - ABSTRACT: With the proliferation of three-component seismometers on volcanoes, the temptation is great to use polarization analysis, as we do in earthquake seismology, to determine propagation direction and/or wavetype in order to locate and characterize the wave"s source. In volcano seismology, there are two impediments to such a procedure: the complexity of the volcano"s structure and the often long-lasting volcanic seismic signals. I develop a simple model of acoustic scattering and apply it to three simple, theoretical source signals, which represent the classes of signals encountered at volcanoes. When the medium is strongly scattering, the polarization at a receiver location for impulsive, sinusoidal or square-wave sources mimics the characteristics for volcanic shocks, tornillos with a single frequency and multichromatic tremor or tornillos. The polarization observed for the square-wave source resembles that observed for multichromatic tremor at Lascar Volcano, Chile, and multichromatic tornillos at Galeras Volcano, Colombia. At low frequencies, the particle motion is fairly linear and nearly constant, but cannot necessarily be used directly to indicate the direction to the source. At all frequencies, the particle motion exhibits some characteristics of Rayleigh waves, namely ellipticity of varying degrees and an "RZ" product that oscillates with twice the frequency of the mode. If this model is correct, the lack of change of fundamental wavefield parameters, such as the polarization, for low frequencies during any given tornillo and from one tornillo to the next implies that the location of the source is stable to within a resolution of about 200 m.

AB - ABSTRACT: In Colombia are available a discreet number of historical seismology investigations, dating back 50 years. This paper reviews basic information about earthquakes studies in Colombia, such as primary sources, compilation of descriptive catalogues and parametric catalogues. Father Jesus Emilio Ramirez made the main systematic study before 1975. During the last 20 years, great earthquakes hit Colombia and, as consequence, historical seismology investigation was developed in the frame of seismic hazard projects.

AB - ABSTRACT: Two sediment cores were recovered from two swamps in the dry forest lowland ecosystem of the Patia Valley (Colombia). The 500-cm long core El Patia-1 was analysed using diatoms, pollen, lithostratigraphy, geochemistry, charcoal and radiocarbon dates. The 270-cm long core Patia-2 was analysed using pollen, lithostratigraphy and radiocarbon dates. The environmental reconstruction includes the local development and history of the Patia-1 swamp and the regional vegetation history of the two swamps. The environmental reconstruction shows a fluvial system in the area before 7830 (super 14) C yr BP (ca. 8590 cal yr BP). After this date, the river gradually moved away leading to the formation of the swamp Patia-1; open vegetation with patches of dry forest surrounded the swamp. Between 7670 and 6860 (super 14) C yr BP (8350-7690 cal yr BP), the swamp become partially isolated from the river and was a permanent water body which was alkaline and mesotrophic. During this period, the surroundings were covered by dry forest. From 6860 to 5870 (super 14) C yr BP (7690-6690 cal yr BP), the swamp was totally isolated from the river and suffered from frequent periods of desiccation and erosion. From 5870 to 3570 (super 14) C yr BP (6690-3890 cal yr BP), the swamp turned into a marsh/terrestrial environment and in the surrounding area, the dry forest alternated with open vegetation; it is possible that there were human impacts on the environment during this period. Between 3570 and 1990 (super 14) C yr BP (3890-2000 cal yr BP), unstable conditions prevailed. After 1990 (super 14) C yr BP (2000 cal yr BP), swamp conditions of permanent water were re-established; open vegetation surrounded the swamp. Agriculture and human activities were present and have continued since then. The climatic reconstruction suggests an increase in humidity at ca. 7670 (super 14) C yr BP (8350 cal yr BP) and a dry climate between 6860 and 5870 (super 14) C yr BP (7690-6690 cal yr BP).

AB - ABSTRACT: It is considered that the current delta of the Canal del Dique is the result of shovel outlets of the Magdalena river (Pleistocene) and of human activity represented in the opening of a channel that began, with ups and downs in XVII century. During the Holocene, they conformed several islands, very probably due to mind diapirism between the island of Baru and Punta Flamenquito, giving place to a system of wetlands lagoon type where the Magdalena river partially or sporadically ended, giving origin to a complex of fluvial and brackish wetlands described by the colonial cartographers. During the second half of the XX century they open up a definitive waterway, intensifying the sedimentation problems in the wetlands complexes as in the bays of Cartagena and Barbacoas.

AB - ABSTRACT: This field trip guide, synthetizes the recent geochronological and petrographical developments about the nature and origin of the lithological units that crop out in the Aburra Valley, as well as the tectonic mechanism that generated the valley. It was developed for the IX Colombian Geological Congress that took place in Medellin from July 30 to August 1st 2003. The lithological units observed during the field trip include the Medellin Dunite, the Rodas chloritic schists and actinolitities, the El Picacho Metagabbros, the Medellin amphibolite, the Antioquian Batholith, the Ancon muscovitic schists and the La Miel Gneiss. In several stations the geomorphological units were described, in particular the faults that limit the eastern side of the valley, as well as the versant deposits. The tectonic origin of the valley is attributed to left-lateral movements that produced a pull-apart basin about 3 to 4 Ma.
