NEW PERSPECTIVES ON DEALING WITH SYNONYMY

(Abstract)
In this study, we tried to prove that, in order to determine the semantic identity of two lexical units, it is important to resort to a phrastic context. Our research emphasizes the importance held by the use of a syntactic-semantic criterion in the contextual analysis of the synonymy of adjectives and verbs. Concerning the adjectives, one should take into account their position in relation to the nominal, given that, in many situations, adjectives get different meanings, according to whether they come in ante- or in postposition. The verbs that are labelled as synonymous must have the same syntactic behaviour and the same number of arguments, fulfilling the same theta role.
