This contribution presents the investigation results on screen content coding. In the investigation, all the available 4:4:4 screen content sequences were encoded by the HM10.0_RExt2.0 software at various QPs as well as in the lossless mode. As part of the investigation, close inspections on the subjective quality of the decoded sequences were also carried out. The study reportedly showed that HEVC could indeed achieve subjectively or visually lossless quality when QP was smaller than some moderate values. However, compared with the lossless coding results from an alternative solution proposed to HEVC, the lowest HEVC bitrates that led to the perceptually lossless quality were higher or significantly higher for some sequences. Based on these investigation results, it was reported that there is a potential that the coding efficiency of HEVC can be significantly improved for screen content. The contribution suggested further study on screen content coding for HEVC future extensions.
