JCTVC-O0064 HLS: SEI message for transfer function information [S. Hattori, T. Suzuki (Sony)]

This contribution proposes a new SEI message to signal knee function information to enable display devices to process decompression or compression of colour samples of the decoded pictures to customize the picture for a particular display environment.
It was remarked that the tone mapping SEI message seems to have something similar to this. The contributor said that this indicated a warping applied prior to the gamma pre-compensation to try to better reproduce the original dynamic range of the input, whereas the tone mapping SEI message has a different purpose.
There was an error in the proposed syntax regarding the syntax handling of the cancel flag, as the presence of the subsequent parameters should be conditioned on that.
It was asked whether this was sufficient to be generally applicable and fully adequate for what is needed – e.g., whether additional parameters or some other model might need to be added.
The contributor indicated that knee functions are well understood and widely used and are specified in a SMPTE registered document RDD 18:2012 (registered by Sony).
A participant said that the proposal seemed useful and expressed interest and support for it.
Further study was encouraged to confirm the appropriateness and completeness of the proposal.
