behind their backs. You think you're a big shot when you haven't the

Brains to realize you never will amount to anything more than a two-bit

paper pusher. Yes, I know you."

The lawyer was stunned! Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across

the room and asked,

"Mrs. Jones, do you know the defence attorney?"

She again replied, "Why, yes, I do. I've known Mr. Bradley since he was a

youngster, too. He's lazy, bigoted, and he has a drinking problem.

He can't build a normal relationship with anyone and his law practice is

one of the worst in the entire state. Not to mention he cheated on his

wife with three different women. One of them was your wife. Yes, I know

him." The defence attorney almost died.

The judge asked both counsellors to approach the bench and, in a very quiet voice, said,

"If either of you idiots asks her if she knows me,

I'll send you to the electric chair!!"

Hi Everyone,

OKA OWNERS GROUP (PUTTING PEOPLE AND THE ENVIRONMENT FIRST)

NEWSLETTER March 2007

Thank you to all those who have sent articles and information for inclusion in the newsletter. I am only the editor, so I rely on members to provide the input.

We are in the process of updating the information about availability of parts that was put together by Bob Etherington some years ago. I send this on to all new members for their information, but as Bob lives in Sydney many of the suppliers/repairers are in that area. Oka’s in general are made up of fairly readily available components and we would like to include information from all over Australia that members have found, either in their travels or their own areas. Please note that parts listed may only apply to your model of Oka, and most Okas are different in at least some respects from all the others when they leave Oka at Bibra Lake. John Hendriks has put a list onto the website and alternatively you could send further information to him.

I have also included another topic from the website forum. This isn’t just for your information – you may be able to provide more or different views on this topic that you could put forward, either onto the forum or via the newsletter. The website has all kinds of information that isn’t available elsewhere but some members don’t have computers or don’t access the Internet on a regular basis.

Many Oka Owners are preparing for their winter treks at this time of year. We are planning to travel to the Coburg Peninsula via Western Queensland and Lawn Hill but our preparation is behind schedule as Lloyd’s mother passed away recently after a long period in hospital. If you might be interested in travelling with us, you would have to make contact with us quickly, as there are only about 15 vehicles permitted to travel on these roads each day. We will leave in early July.

Don’t forget that permits are required in many Aboriginal areas. These are usually provided free, but can take some time to process if you have a special request. On the other hand, some can be arranged through the internet very quickly. I know that some people travel without permits, but we did hear that if you are found without, the locals can be difficult, and if you have an accident or mishap, they will refuse to help you in any way. We have found the ExplorOz Website has some great information. You can find it at: www.ExplorOz.com , and if you join, they will send you a newsletters by email – free.

Drive safely

Still Wondering What To Do At Easter? Come to YatteYattah and find out about . . . .

The Blessing of the Fleet Festival - Ulladulla - Thursday to Easter Sunday

“...This picturesque coastal resort, with beaches and national parks is also a substantial fishing port. Each year the town holds an Easter ceremony begun by the Italian immigrants who built up the local fishing fleet in the 1930s. This rite is the centerpiece of an Italian-style festival with plenty of fresh seafood, local wines, music, entertainment, stalls, amusement rides and other fun activities such as the Greasy Pole Contest, a Lantern Parade and Show Time on the Harbour. Easter Saturday is Children’s Day, while the Main Street Parade, the Blessing of the Fishing Fleet and the closing fireworks occur on Sunday....” From Gregory’s “See Australia All Year”.

From “Cassowary Crossing” by David Astle

“...scarecrows lining the streets and shop windows ... And believe me, the Milton-Ulladulla-Scarecrow-Blessing-of- the-Fleet-Festival is fun on a stick...”.

Learn from our hosts about Wiltipolls, see them in the flesh.

Learn about calving, first hand. The Black Angus heifers are due to calve at Easter. Have you been to Tianjara Falls?

Travel the Fire Trial from Porters Creek Dam to the Nowra/Braidwood Road. Enjoy the beautiful scenery of the South Coast.

OKA RALLY - Tooroongo falls, Noojee, Victoria 5th - 7th January 2007

Written by Rowena Paterson

I think we had the whole little town of Noojee (east of Melbourne in the high country) talking, amazed at these weird looking trucks going through town heading up to the falls. They must have felt the army had arrived as 14 OKAs went through town during the weekend. What a sight it must have been, to those who have never seen an OKA before. All of a sudden there were OKAs everywhere. With a roll up of 14 OKAs, 16 members, a fantastic little camping area on the Toorongo River who wouldn't be pleased. The whole area was green, a very welcome sight from the dry drought conditions gripping the majority of the countryside. Noojee is one of Victorias highest rainfall areas.

It was great to see the following members attend the rally: OKA Pete Furlong, Geoff & Annette Lloyd, Chris & Elanie Deed & family, Paul Nott, Lex & Corina Brown, Ian & Jackie Jones, Darren Visser & Janine Ridley & family, Fred Hallett & Vicki Blackley, Andrew Crowther & Pam, Geoff & Sandra Wilkinson, Jurgen & Robbie Mauracher, John & Dianne Smithard, OKA Bob & Marge, Peter Davis, Greg & Maree Boyle & family and myself.

We also had a number of visitors during the weekend, most being family members. Glen, a visitor from the Mornington area came along for a few hours on Saturday to learn about OKAs (as he is thinking about buying one). Glen had a talk to many of the members and also was lucky enough to have a drive of Jurgen's OKA (along some 4wd tracks in the Noojee area). I think he went home pretty happy. Maybe we have converted another person to join our OKA family.

We had hot weather on Friday with Saturday and Sunday being overcast with showers. The kids played in the river, it was freezing mountain water, but that didn't seem to worry them. Alot of us walked up to the Toorongo falls, a good hour walk from the camp.

Our OKAs created alot of interest to the campers in the area, with many driving around to have a good look. I heard one strange question "is this some type of movie set or something?" Another guy drove around his little hotted up car, hung his head out the window and asked "what are these funny trucks?" OKA Pete answered "made in Australia". The guy replied, "anything made in Australia good hey?" and off he went happy with the reply.

Majority of members left on Sunday. Before leaving, Jurgen decided to try out his 4wd skills, showing fellow campers what an OKA can do. He gave a demo on how to race up a steep embankment and how to rock climb. Everybody in the camp just stopped what they were doing and stared, amazed! Thanks Jurgen, great show!

We had 4 OKAs stay on Sunday night. A few campers joined us around the camp fire including Pat & Joanna (who originally came from Canada). They had never seen an OKA before, but soon learnt all about them. Joanna brought out her guitar and sang. We had some kids from the neighbouring camp also join us. Before long we were making heaps of noise including Didgeridoo, Guitar, Tapping Sticks, singing & dancing. Sandra and the kids were having a ball dancing around the camp fire.

Then the question came from Pat "when's your next rally?, we would love to come". I think somebody really enjoyed our company.

Thanks to Paul for removing the huge black snake from the toilet block. Well done! Photos from the weekend have been placed on the website.

We would love to see as many OKAs as possible attend the rally on the 25th March at Jurgen & Claudias property at Mornington. It's going to be "The biggest OKA rally yet".

23rd - 24th March is also the weekend of the International Air Show, which is on at Avalon between Geelong and Melbourne for those who might be interested.

OKA Weekend at Edi Cutting Friday 9th – Monday 12th March 2007

What a great time I had at the OKA Rally on the long weekend in March at Edi Cutting! I travelled with my friend Rowena in her OKA. I had just experienced a few bad days as my motorhome had a wrecked gear box and was out of action. I was stranded. Rowena came to my rescue and I went with her to Edi, north of Whitfield where the bushfires had raged over the hills a few months earlier. The area was still very dry but the cool, refreshing, running water in the King River made you forget about those devastating fires. The campsite was good, not overcrowded and mainly flat under the shade of the gum trees. The central campfire was the meeting place for all the OKA owners and their families.

On the Friday evening just Rowena and I were camped beside the river. I was a ‘ring-in’ as I had my tent – a bit different to my Mazda bus motorhome. What would this weekend be like with all these 4WD enthusiasts? I would wait and see. Friday evening saw us light the campfire and cook tea. I always enjoy this part of camping – the campfire, the stories told and the friendliness of the campers. However, there were just two of us. Then Tiger, the friendly dog from the campers next door paid a visit and jumped up on my lap. She was quite content there for quite awhile.

Next morning Greg and Maree Boyle arrived with their four children, twins Thomas and Phillip, Emma and Robert in their OKA with everything from firewood to an extra tent for the kids. More OKAs were expected. After the quietness of the previous night, Saturday was full of excitement. Each OKA, as it arrived, did the mandatory horn blast as it quickly surveyed the campsite from the highway above. The dogs next door did not know what was happening! Was it some alien spaceship arriving to destroy the tranquil and sereneness of the King River? By the time the fifth OKA arrived, the dogs plus the campers were accustomed to the special OKA welcome and the sight of the large off road vehicles!

The five OKAs were all different although their basic shape was the same. Some of the owners showed me their vehicle and how they had adapted it to suit their needs. Andrew’s was decked out like a motorhome with a special platform out the back so you could sit and watch the scenery or watch the world go by without getting muddy or wet in the out-of–the-way places his 4WD vehicle could go. Chris and Arlene had a fold out slide-on camper on the back with a tent for their two sons, Bradley and Wyatt. Peter and Serina arrived with their young son, Cameron who had a great time playing with the other kids.

The children certainly enjoy their many OKA camping weekends. They played and swam in the river, took turns in riding Brad’s and Wyatt’s bikes, played cricket or a special OKA version of cricket, stoked up the campfire from the ashes each morning and generally had a thoroughly good time together. The adults enjoyed a swim or paddle in the river which doubled as the bath, each other’s company around the campfire, all the interesting and varied conversations or just relaxed with a book or magazine away from the bustle of home life.

Unusual entertainment was when Chris, Greg and Peter were standing near the opened front passenger door of Chris’s vehicle when he suddenly yelled, “Snake!” Greg leapt up into the vehicle from a standing start while Chris and Peter broke the jumping backwards record! A 2 foot (60cm) red belly black snake was eventually caught but not until it had been outwitted by the fellas in its ‘hide and seek’ game! Everyone else congregated at a safe distance around the OKA. The resultant discussion on snakes by Maree to the assembled youngsters reminded them to take care in the bush. A great “hands-on” teaching episode. Little Cameron nervously asked if the tail section of the snake was safe to hold so that he could go and show his parents part of the unwelcomed intruder.

That night while all were gathered around the campfire, the children toasted marshmallows for their special treat. Later the Boyle children shared Glow in the Dark sticks with their friends. Rowena entertained us with her didgeridoo playing while I accompanied her on the clap sticks. Some of the children also wanted to participate so Rowena had different accompaniment rhythms with a youngster tapping the sticks. We have some budding percussionists within the group!

On Sunday afternoon Ian and Paul arrived in one OKA to join the group and were immediately told of the snake episode and the previous evening’s entertainment. Paul had just arrived back from Darwin that morning so it was a marvelous effort for him to come. Just shows that some people just can’t stay away from their OKA rallies! Another great night followed and some could not pull themselves away from the interesting topics that were discussed around the campfire. I believe it was about 1am before the fire was allowed to wane and the last OKA owners retired for some sleep. Just as well it was a long weekend!

Next day most OKAs departed at varying times during the day while Andrew, Ian and Paul remained for another night’s get together. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and all were pleased they had made the special effort to attend. It started out to be a record low for the number of OKAs attending a rally (only one and a tent for Friday night!) but the weekend grew to six OKAs plus an extra owner gaining a ride! For most it was their first visit to the beautiful free campsite of Edi Cutting with pit toilets. What a great way to find out about different parts of Victoria with your friends in the OKA Club. Many thanks to Rowena for organizing the weekend and to everyone for accepting me as an Honorary OKA member for the weekend.

Having recently purchased our Oka from John & Maree Hendricks at Winmalee, we decided to take it for its first trip as its new owners.

As we live in the Hunter Valley and one of our son’s lives in Cobar we thought that a visit to him would be appropriate. Grabbing a few supplies, clothes and bedding, we headed off – first stop being just out of Dunedoo. There is a lovely stock reserve beside a dry creek bed, very quiet and private, just what we like.

First night everything seemed to be OK. We had bought a Prep. bench for outside, so that I could cook and wash up out there instead of inside the camper. From our stock of camping gear, we’d bought along a fluro for outside and a lamp for our dinner table.

Second night was spent on the verge outside our sons place in Cobar – curtains drawn, but still very comfortable, considering we were in the middle of Cobar residential area.

Getting used to the blinker control being on the other side took a while. Our son asked to have a drive and we couldn’t stop laughing every time the windscreen wipers went on.

On the way home we headed for Warren and using our “Camping with Animals” book (as we had our dog “Bonnie” with us) we went looking for a suggested spot near the weir. Decided it wasn’t what we wanted, so drove a little further on to a reserve that ran along the banks of the Macquarie River.

Finally found a spot that wasn’t too steep to get down to the water and was under a canopy of trees. Very secluded, shady and the river was at our doorstep for a swim. Had a very relaxed afternoon and night, several swims, peace and tranquility.

The Oka performed very well; we were comfortable and had a very enjoyable few days. Looking forward to meeting other Oka owners.

TECHNICAL (taken from the website forum)

Has anybody been able to modify the noisy air intake from behind the drivers head and re-locate it to a better position....would like to find out a suitable way and improve my OKA. Rob Williamson chezandrob@westnet.com.au

The OKA has 2 Air Filters have you replaced Both of them?

I have no Excess noise at all, the dronning you can get when the filters are getting blocked,

I have insulation around the drop pipe but believe this is standard, try removing the Outer Filer Only and go for a quick test drive and see if there is any difference.

I am starting to believe the OKAs may have a too small air box and not allowing enough air through and some possible larger replacements, David

It's been a long time but if you are still interested, I have fixed the air intake noise problem on our Oka 2 ways:

I've insulated (actually over-insulated) the air intake pipe behind the drivers seat (refer previous post), and

I've fitted an extended snorkel up and forward over the drivers door so the air intake is now along side the sun visor. It uses standard 90mm PVC piping.

This has shifted the source of the sucking noise to the front and it has all but disappeared (except when the window is down).
