The Emblem




The Emblem of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences is a symbolic expression of the confluence of both Eastern and Western Health Sciences. A central wand with entwined snakes symbolises Greek and Roman Gods of Health called Hermis and Mercury is adapted as symbol of modern medical science. The pot above depicts Amrutha Kalasham of Dhanvanthri the father of all Health Sciences. The wings above it depict Human Soul called Hamsa (Swan) in Indian philosophy. The rising Sun at the top symbolises knowledge and enlightenment. The two twigs of leaves in western philosophy symbolises Olive branches, which is an expression of Peace, Love and Harmony. In Hindu Philosophy it depicts the Vanaspathi (also called as Oushadi) held in the hands of Dhanvanthri, which are the source of all Medicines. The lamp depicts human energy (kundalini). The script “Devahitham Yadayahu” inside the lamp is taken from Upanishath Shanthi Manthram (Bhadram Karnebhi Shrunuyanadev…), which says “May we live the full span of our lives allotted by God in perfect health” which is the motto of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.

SECTION I
REGULATIONS

  1. Aims and Objectives

The aim of the Post-graduate education in Unani shall be the orientation in specialities and to produce specialist who can be an efficient Teacher, Clinician, Pharmaceutical Expert and research worker in respective fields of Unani Tib.

  1. Post-Graduate Degree – Specialities Nomenclature

The nomenclature of postgraduate degree in respective specialities shall be as follows:

Mahire Tib (M.D.Unani) in

1. Ilmul Advia Pharmacology

2. Tahaffuzi Wa Samaji Tib Preventive and Social Medicine

3. Moalejat Medicine



Mahire-Jarahat (M.S.Unani) in

1. Ilmul Qabala wa Amraze Niswan Obstetrics and Gynaecology



II. Medium of Instruction

The medium of instruction shall be Urdu substantiated with Arabic, Persian and English where ever necessary. The terminologies shall essentially be in Unani Tib.



IV. Criteria for admission

Persons holding degree/diploma in Unani System of Medicine of not less than 4 years duration from a recognised institution included in IInd schedule of Indian Medicine Central Council Act 1970 and enrolled in State register of ISM are eligible for Post-graduate course in Unani.

The candidates will be called for competitive written tests on the basis of their academic records in Under-graduate course. Test shall consist of ONE paper CARRYING 100 MARKS. TEST paper SHALL be OF OBJECTIVE TYPE QUESTIONS related to all Unani subjects including clinical knowledge of Unani System of Medicine. The admission shall be given on the basis of marks secured in the competitive examination in order of merit. Qualifying marks shall be 50% in order to make the candidate eligible for consideration on the merit list under no circumstances it should be less than 50%.However, the qualifing marks for SC/ST and OBC candidates will be 40%.

A CANDIDATE WHO IS ALREADY HOLDING A POST GRADUATE DEGREE IN ANY SPECIALITY OF UNANI MEDICINE SHALL NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR ADMISSION TO ANY OTHER POST GRADUATE DEGREE



V. Obtaining Eligibility Certificate

No candidate shall be admitted to any PG course Mahire Tib (M.D.Unani)/ Mahire-Jarahat (M.S.Unani), unless the candidate has obtained and produced eligibility certificate issued by the university. The candidate should obtain the eligibilty certificate before the last date for the admission as notified by the university. The candidate has to make an application to the university with the following documents along with the prescribed fee.



  1. BUMS passed degree certificate issued by any recognised university.

  2. Marks card of all the university examinations passed (I, II, III, Professional Examination / 1st to 5th year BUMS course).

  3. Attempt certificate issued by the Principal.

  4. Certificate regarding the recognisition of Unani Medical College by the CCIM New Delhi.

  5. Completion of Internship certificate from a recognised institution.

  6. Registration by State Unani Practitioners Registration Board/Unani Council.

  7. Proof of SC/ST or Category I, as the case may be in case of reserved category of seats.

  8. Nativity certificate issued by a revenue official not below the rank of district revenue authority by the candidates claiming the seat under the seats reserved for outside the state candidates.

  9. Service certificate if he/she is in service issued by the concerned head of the institution.

  10. A candidate who has been admitted to the PostGraduate degree course should register his/her name in the university within a month of admission after paying the registration fee.

VI. Duration and Course of Study

All the candidates for PG degree are required to pursue the recommended course for at least three academic years as full time candidates in an institution affiliated to and approved for PG studies by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and Central Council of Indian Medicine New Delhi.



The course of study for the period of three academic years after admission shall be devoted to speciality course

VII. Methods of Training

  1. The participation of students in all facets of educational process is essential.

  2. Every candidate shall be given intensive training in classical knowledge along with comparative and critical study in respective specialty.

  3. The emphasis should be on in-service training and not in didactic lectures.

  4. Every candidate is required to know about the method and technique of research work done in respective fields.

  5. The training of PG students shall be full time with graded responsibility in management and treatment of patients entrusted to his/her care and to deal with emergencies.

  6. Every candidate should take part in seminars, group discussions, grand rounds, case demonstration, clinics journal review meetings, practicals and demonstrations.

  7. Training should include involvement in laboratory and experimental work and research studies.

  8. In the 1st year period the emphasis should be to have adequate knowledge in applied aspects of the fundamental of all the subjects of medicine in all the applied and comparative aspects relevant to the speciality concerned with special reference to the fundamentals of Unani.

  9. Students of basic subject should be posted to allied and relevant clinical departments. Similarly students of clinical subjects should be posted to basic medical sciences and allied specialities.

  10. The clinical training should aim to extend the knowledge of candidate to undertake independent work as a specialist.

  11. In the specialty of Ilmul Qabala wa Amraze Niswan (Obstetrics and gynaecology) / any other such departments included time to time, the practical should aim in eliciting knowledge on investigative procedures, techniques and surgical performance so that the candidate may be capable to undertake independent work in surgical procedures and their management in the respective speciality.

  12. Thorough and intensive training as per the planned programmes should be given to every candidate during all stages of course and such programmes should be available for the inspection and scrutiny. Adequate training in teaching technology and research methods should be undertaken during the course of studies.

  13. Study visit to centres of excellence in Unani should be under taken.

  1. Attendance, Progress and Conduct

    1. Each candidate is required to have a minimum 85% attendance in each of the subject in theory and practical, separately, during each academic year of PG degree course provided further any kind of leave shall not be counted as part of academic year without prejudice to minimum of 85% of training period every year.

  1. Each year shall be taken as a unit for the purpose of calculating attendance.

  2. A candidate pursuing degree should work in the concerned department of the institution for the full period as a full time student. No candidate is permitted to run a clinic or work in clinic/laboratory/nursing home/massaging centre/or such centres while studying PG course. However an official posting for a special training / observation or other such education purpose can be made by institute at a location which is out side the institute. Such posting will not be more than 3 months duration in entire course.

  3. No candidate should join any other course of study or appear for any other examination conducted by this university or any other university in India or abroad during the period of registration.

  4. Every student shall attend symposia, seminars, conferences, journal review meetings, grand rounds, continuing education activities, case presentations, demonstrations, clinics, practical, lectures, etc. during each year as prescribed by the department.

  5. Every student will be required to attend the hospital and other duties as may be allotted to him or her, during course of study. Every student is required to do the house job duties and clinical registrar’s duties in their respective departments during preliminary and final courses respectively.

  6. Any student who fails to complete the course in the manner stated above shall not be permitted to appear for the university examination.

IX. Monitoring Progress of Studies

Work diary/ logbook: Every candidate shall maintain a work diary and record of his/her participation in the training progress conducted by the department such as journal reviews, seminars etc as given in the checklist (see section IV for cheklists and logbook format). Special mention may be made of the presentation by the candidate as well as details of clinical or laboratory procedures, if any, conducted by the candidate. The work diary shall be scrutinised and certified by the head of the department and head of the institution, and presented during the university practical/ clinical examination.

X. Dissertation

1. Every candidate pursuing MD/MS degree course is required to carry out work on the selected research project under the guidance of the recognised post graduate teacher. The result of such work shall be submitted in the form of dissertation.

2. The dissertation is aimed to train a postgraduate degree student in research techniques. It includes identification of problems, formulation of the hypothesis, search and review of literature, getting acquainted with the recent advances designing of the research study, collection of data, critical analysis, comparison of results and drawing of conclusions.

3. Every candidate shall submit to the Registrar (Academic) of the RGUHS in the prescribed proforma, two copies of synopsis containing particulars of proposed dissertation work within six months from the date of commencement of the course/ registration or as per the calendar of events published by RGUHS. The synopsis shall be sent through proper channel to the university.

4. Such synopses will be reviewed and dissertation topic will be registered by the University. No change in the dissertation topic or guide shall be made without prior approval of the university.

5. The dissertation should be written under the following headings:



    1. Introduction.

    2. Aims/objectives of study.

    3. Review of literature.

    4. Material and methods.

    5. Results

    6. Discussion

    7. Conclusion

    8. Summary.

    9. References

    10. Tables

    11. Annexure

6. The subject of every dissertation should be practical oriented, devoid of unpromising specifications and should be helpful in the development of science of Unani System. The subject of dissertation must be related with the subject matter of the specialty offered by the candidate.

7. The dissertation work shall be not less than 50 pages and should not exceed 150 pages excluding References, Tables, Questionnaires and other annexure. It should be neatly typed in double line spacing in one side of paper (A4 SIZE 8.27”x11.69”) and bound properly. Spiral binding should be avoided. The dissertation shall be certified by the guide, In-Charge/Head of the Department and Head of the Institution. A declaration by the candidate for having done the work should also be included and the guide, head of the department and Head of the Institution shall also certify that the dissertation is the bonafide work of the candidate.

9. Four copies of dissertation thus prepared shall be submitted through proper channels to the Registrar (Evaluation) six months before final examination on or before the dates notified by the university, along with a soft copy (CD) as per the guidelines issued by RGUHS in this regard.

10 The dissertation shall be valued by three examiners appointed by the university. Two

examiners will be external in the subject and the guide/superviser as internal examiner.

Approval of dissertation work by external and internal examiners is essential Pre condition for the candidate to appear in the university examination.

11. Guide: The Academic Qualification and Teaching Experience required for recognition in this University as a guide for dissertation work is as per Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and Central Council of Indian Medicine regulations 2007.

12. A Co-Guide may be included provided the work requires substantial contribution from the sister department or from another institution recognised for teaching by RGUHS/CCIM. The co-guide shall be a recognised postgraduate teacher of RGUHS.

13. Change of Guide In the event of registered guide leaving the Institute/ college in the middle of the academic year due to any reason or in the event of death of the guide or any other valid reasons, guide may be changed with prior permission from the university only.

XI. Students Teacher Ratio

The student teacher ratio shall be such that the number of PG teachers to the number of PG students admitted per year be maintained at the ratio of 1:3 in case of Professors, 1:2 in case of Readers and 1:1 in case of Lecturer per academic year.



XII. Schedule for Examination

The M.D. PG degree shall have two examinations as follows:



1. First year examination at the end of one academic year after admission to1st year.

2. Final examination shall be held at the end of 3 academic years after admission to 1st year.

Passing first year examination is essential to appear in final exam.

Acceptance of dissertation is a pre-condition for permission to appear for final exam.

Not more than two examinations shall be conducted in an academic year.

If any student fails to clear the I year in four consecutive chances, his/her registration shall be deemed to be cancelled.



XIII. Scheme of Examination

University Examination

A. FIRST YEAR MD/MS [Doctor Of Medicine/Master of Surgery] EXAMINATION.

Shall consist of four theory papers for each subject of speciality and one practical/viva examination for each subject of Doct6or of Medicine/Master of Surgery.

Each theory paper shall be of 100 marks and three hours duration. The pattern of papers for each Post Graduate Degree course is as follows.



1. Moalijat (Medicine)

Paper I: Biochemistry and Genetics.

Paper 2: Moalijat Usoole Tehqeeq wa Hayati Shumariyat (Fundamentals of Clinical Research and Biostatistics).

Paper 3: Usoole Tashkheesh, Tajveez mai jaded izafat (Principles of diagnosis and Treatment with advancements).

Paper 4: Ilaj bit tadabeer (Regimental therapy).

2. Ilmul Advia (Pharmacology)

Paper I: Ilmul Wasful aqaqeer (Pharmacognosy)

Paper 2: Usoole Tahqeeq wa Hayati Shumariyat (Research Methodology and Biostatistics)

Paper 3: General and experimental Pharmacology.

Paper 4: Tibbi Keemiya wa Mearbandi advia (Standardization of Unani drugs)

3. Amraze niswan wa Qabalat (Gynaechology and Obstetrics).

Paper I: Hayaati Kemiya-wa-ltlaqui Janinyat (Biochemistry, Applied Genetics).

Paper 2: Usoole Tehqeeq wa Hayati Shumariyat (Research Methodology and

Biostatistics).



Paper 3: Applied Anatomy and Physiology of female reproductive system .

Paper 4: Ilmul Qabalat.

4. Tahaffuzi-wa-samaji tib (Preventive and social medicine)

Paper I: Tarikh-e-Hifzane Sehat ( Histroy of Hifzane Sehat wa Samaji Tib).

Paper 2: Sehat-wa-Marz Main Maholyati Asrat-wa-Sehati Tanzeemat ( Concept of health and diseases, Environmental influence on health).

Paper 3: Usoole-Tahqeeq-wa-Hayati Shymariyat.

Paper 4: Asbab-e-Siitta Zaroriya-Mai-Jadeed Izafat.

There shall be one common practical and viva voce examination of I00 marks for each subjects of speciality.

B. FINAL YEAR MD/MS [Doctor Of Medicine/Master of Surgery] EXAMINATION.

Passing the first year examination will be essential to appear in the final examination.

In any branch of study the examination shall consist of :



  1. Dissertation.

  2. Theory – written papers.

  3. Clinical /practical and viva voce examination as the case may be.

a) Theory – written papers: There shall be four/three theory papers, in the speciality/subject selected by the candidate for special study. Each paper shall carry 100 Marks and will be of three hours duration. There shall be two Long Essay questions of 20 marks each and six Short Essay Questions of 10 marks each.

There shall be separate practical/viva exams for each of the four subjects.

The distribution of papers in the different subjects is as follows:

I. Amraz-e Nizame Hazm, Boal wa Tanasul (Diseases of Digestive and Urino-genital

systems).

II. Amraz Mutaddiya, Hummiyat, Jild wa Mafasil (Infectious diseases, Fevers and

Diseases of skin and Joints).

III. Amraz Nizame Aasab wa Ghudade Laqanati (Diseases of nervous and Endocrine

systems).

IV. Amraz Nizame Tanaffus wa Daurane Khoon (Diseases of Respiratory and

Circulatory Systems).

b) Practical / clinical and Viva –Voce examination:

Practical / clinical examination should be aimed at assessing competence and skills of techniques and procedures, interpretation and inference of laboratory or experimental or clinical work relating to his/her subject for undertaking independent work as a specialist.

Practical or clinical examination shall consist of total 200 marks. Each candidate should examine at least 4 cases.



Viva voce examination: Shall aim at assessing the depth of knowledge, logical, reasoning, confidence,oral communicating skills and dissertation work and shall consists of total 100 marks.

d) Examiners: Teachers with minimum of 5 years of P.G.teaching experience are eligible asP.G. examiners.The qualification prescribed for P.G teaching staff.in Unani is as per CCIM regulations 2007. There shall be two examiners for practical and viva-voce for the first year examination. Similarly there shall be two examiners for practical and viva voce for final year examination. One examiner will be external and one will be internal for each speciality. The two examiners shall value the theory papers of first year and final year examination.

  1. Criteria for Declaring Pass

    1. A candidate depending on his/her subject of speciality shall appear in all theory papers, practical/clinical and viva- voce examination conducted by the university and shall secure not less than 50% marks both in theory and in the practical / viva examination, separately for each subject.

2. A student securing less than 50% marks as described above shall be declared to have failed in the examination.Failed candidate may appear in any subsequent examination upon payment of fresh fee to the Registrar [Evaluation].

XV. Tour



An educational tour will be organised in second or third year to visit the institutions of Unani system of medicine, pharmaceutical concerns, herbal gardens and hospitals to acquaint the students with regional problems and research work on different regional diseases in India. They will prepare and submit the tour report for scrutiny by Head of the Department.

SECTION II

Goals and Objectives of the Course

Goals

The Goals of the Postgraduate course in the various specialities are to train M.D.Unani graduate:



  • To practice respective speciality of Unani efficiently and effectively backed by scientific knowledge and skill.

  • Exercise empathy and caring attitude and maintain high ethical standards.

  • Continue to evince keen interest in continuing professional education in the speciality and allied specialities irrespective of whether in teaching or practice (Matab).

  • Willing to share the knowledge and skill with any learner, junior or a colleague.

  • To develop faculty for critical analysis and evaluation of various concepts and views, to adopt the rational approach.

Objectives

  • The objective is to train a candidate so as to ensure higher competence in both general and special area of interest in the field of Unani Medicine and prepare him / her for career in teaching, research and speciality practice. A candidate must have high degree of clinical proficiency in the subject matter and develop competence in research methodology as related to the field of Unani Medicine.

  • The objectives are stated as related to: Knowledge (cognitive domain), Skills (psycho motor domain), Human values, ethical practice and communication abilities (Affective Domain).

  • At the end of training a candidate shall be able to:

Knowledge

  • Demonstrate understanding of basic sciences – USOOLE TIB relevant to speciality. Describe aetiology, patho-physiology, principles of diagnosis and management of common problems within the speciality in adults and children. Acquire adequate classical and advanced/ progressive knowledge. Identify social, economical, environmental and emotional determinants in a given case and take them into account for planning treatment and to refer to appropriate specialists. Update knowledge through self-study and by attending courses, conferences and seminars relevant to competence. Undertake audit, use information technology and carry out research in both basic and clinical sciences with the aim of publishing the work at various scientific journals.

Skills

  • Take a proper clinical history, examine the patient, perform essential diagnostic procedures and other relevant tests and interpret them to come to reasonable diagnosis about the condition (mizaj / sue mizaj / temperaments, akhlat / humours & marz / disease in the light of Unani Medicine).

  • Acquire adequate skills and competence in performing various procedures as required.

Human Values, Ethical Practice and Communication Abilities

  • Adopt ethical principles in all aspects of practice.

  • Foster professional honesty and integrity.

  • Deliver patient care irrespective of social status, caste, creed or religion of the patient.

  • Develop communication skills in particular skill to explain various options available in management and to obtain a true informed consent from the patient.

  • Provide leadership and get best out of his/her team in a congenial working atmosphere.

  • Apply high moral and ethical standards while carrying out human or animal research.

  • Be humble and accept the limitations in his/her knowledge and skill and to ask for help from the colleagues when needed.

  • Respect patient’s rights and privileges including patient’s right to seek second opinion.
