    1. Summary of discussions

      1. M6381: Demo of Energy-efficient media selection in DASH

  • The demo simulates battery depletion and video streaming of 10 representations (5 resolutions x 2 bitrates). Each representation consisted of 3 sequences concatenated into a single bitstream.

  • Four scenarios were demonstrated on a tablet:

    1. The traditional DASH scenario in which selection is based on network conditions. If network conditions are good, then the battery is depleted quickly.

    2. The simplest representation is chosen. This provides poor quality.

    3. A reactive power saving mode which has a one- to two-segment delay in selecting the appropriate representation for power saving. This leads to poor quality at scene changes.

    4. A proactive power saving mode that uses Green Metadata to anticipate video complexity changes and thus provides good quality.

      1. M36394: Detailed Evaluation of Tunable Image Quality HEVC Decoding

  • The contribution fixed a bug that resolved the chroma artifacts in m36024.

  • New luma interpolation filters are proposed and PSNR results for Y, U, V are shown across 4 bitstreams and 4 bitrates.

  • The decoding-time reduction (compared to a compliant decoder) and PSNR were

shown to be proportional to the activation level.

  • The decoded bitstreams were viewed by the group and no artifacts were observed.

  • Results were also provided to show a comparison between an optimized compliant decoder and an optimized tunable decoder. Up to 22% decoding-time reduction was observed in the optimized tunable decoder compared to the optimized compliant decoder.

  • The proponent is encouraged to continue the study and to provide energy measurements on a mobile platform across a wide range of bitstreams such as the gamma anchor that was used for the Green MPEG CfP.
