3D Audio Phase 2

Sang Bae Chon, Samsung, presented

The contribution contains additional information on the MPEG-H DAM 2 technology for carriage of Systems data. The presenter gave an overview of the issue addressed by the technology and then gave detailed information meant to address concerns raised.

The contribution proposes to carry a URL that would permit e.g. the TV to retrieve the missing System data from a web server. The missing systems data is expressed in XML and may indicate:

A mime type is defined for MMT and DASH.

Information carried:

  • Program_id

  • URL

This will continue to be discussed in the joint meeting.

        1. Metadata transport method in MPEG-H 3D Audio stream

        1. Ikuo Tsukagoshi, Toru Chinen, Takehiro Sugimoto

The contribution presents a method for fragmentation/assembly mechanism, but that is already provided by 3D audio core coder syntax. In addition, it proposes an “organization name” field to encode providing organization, e.g. as a 4-character code. The presenter noted that this could be added to the mpegh3daExtElementConfig() instead.

The relevant parts of this contribution (organization name, fragment counter) will continue to be discussed.

        1. Thoughts on MPEG-H 3D audio Phase 2

        1. Juergen Herre, Sascha Disch, Max Neuendorf

The contribution notes that in 2014 ATSC issued a Call for Proposals that requested contributions with the following operating points:

  • 5.1 at rates as low as 80 kb/s (~ 32 kb/s/ch pair)

  • 7.1+4 at rates as low as 144 kb/s (~ 24 kb/s/ch pair)

  • 22.2 at rates as low as 288 kb/s (~ 26 kb/s/ch pair)

These are bitrates that fall between what was investigated in 3D Audio Phase 1 and what is currently being investigated in Phase 2, as highlighted in the following figure:

This corresponds to channel pair bitrates from 32 kb/s to 24 kb/s. The contribution proposes that Phase 2 investigate this bitrate range. More specifically, that the investigation focus on broadcast applications where a MUSHRA quality of “Good” is required.

In summary, the contribution urges that Phase 2 address both of the following:

  • Compression at this intermediate range

  • “Non-compression” functionality, e.g. metadata” that is particularly needed for the broadcast industry.
