If you don’t have the video, play a game so students can
practice describing pitch. Make a space in the classroom
and tell students to stand up. Explain that when they
hear a high note, they have to stretch up as high as they
can, when they hear a low note, they have to curl up
into a ball, and when they hear a middle note, they cross
their arms. If you play an instrument, play a selection of
high, low, and middle-pitched notes. If you don’t play
an instrument, sing the notes. Students do the correct
actions.

3 Read and listen. •
Play the recording while students read the text. Explain
the meaning of
pitch . Demonstrate how making a string
shorter/tighter makes a note higher (and vice versa) with
a real string instrument, if possible.

Then play the recording again, pausing for students to
find and point to the correct photograph in activity

when they find the words
vibrate, make tighter, think string, and
thin string .
