Ask students if they’ve ever gone on a school trip. Check
comprehension of the phrase.

Ask students to look at the photograph and ask
What kind of place is this? (
Desert. ) Elicit adjectives to describe
it (
dry, hot, beautiful, dangerous ). Students guess where
the desert is. You can also ask more prediction questions
for students to guess about Joe’s school trip, e.g.,
What season did Joe visit the desert? How long did he stay? What did he see and do? 1 7 Read and listen. •
Say
Let’s find out. Read and listen. Play the recording.
Students read and listen to Joe’s report of the school trip.
Then ask the prediction questions again for students to
answer and see if their guesses were right. (
The desert is in Mexico. Joe visited in the spring. He stayed for a week. He saw sand dunes and lots of cacti with beautiful flowers. He climbed the sand dunes and went hiking .) Explain
new words (e.g.,
sand dunes ) and check that students
understand the phrase
