Duties


The Bureau of Meteorology is Australia's national weather, climate and water agency. Its expertise and services assist Australians in dealing with the harsh realities of their natural environment, including droughts, floods, fires, storms, tsunami and tropical cyclones. This position is within the Bureau's National Forecasting Services Group which delivers forecasting and warning services to emergency services and the general community. Reporting to the General Manager Public Safety, the National Manager, Disaster Mitigation Policy, is responsible for developing best practice policies, procedures and projects to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of Disaster Mitigation including leading the policy development for new multi-hazard impact warning services and the Bureau's Services Plan for the Emergency Management customers.
This important and challenging senior role oversees the planning, organisation and coordination of all aspects of Disaster Mitigation Policy including improving resilience and minimising impact. The role will monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of public safety warning services, lead policy initiatives to improve warnings impact and deliver enhanced value. The position will provide the secretariat for the Bureau’s Hazard Services Forum and monitor the implementation of the Inter-governmental Agreement (IGA) for Bureau Hazard Services including the Flood, Extreme Weather and Fire Action Plans.
The National Manager, Disaster Mitigation Policy will represent the Bureau at inter-departmental, major national and international stakeholder forums and committees related to disaster mitigation and resilience and lead consultation with State Government disaster mitigation and emergency management authorities. The role also leads the team that coordinates relationships with the International Disaster Risk Reduction community and the World Meteorological Organisation and contribute to developing a community of practice for disaster risk reduction in Australia.

Eligibility


A degree or diploma of an Australian institution, or a comparable overseas qualification, which is appropriate to the duties OR other comparable qualifications, which are appropriate to the duties.

Duties


The Group Executive - Data & Digital is a member of the Bureau’s Executive Team accountable for delivering the data, infrastructure and systems that underpin the Bureau's operations, from measurement and collection through to production and delivery.
The Group Executive will ensure that data is managed at a whole of enterprise level along the full value chain, from the observations network through to the high-performance computing needed to generate products and services for customers.
The Group Executive will lead a multidisciplinary team of approximately 600 staff that deliver services through a range of digital channels, with a focus on user-centred designs that respond to customer needs. He or she will work closely with peers on the Bureau’s Executive Team to contribute to organisational Strategy and leverage the capabilities of the Bureau to provide maximum impact and value for Australia.
This is an exciting opportunity for an outstanding professional to provide leadership in a role that is central to the delivery of the Bureau’s Strategy.
The successful candidate will have a proven record of working in partnerships to address complex business needs and deliver high-value ICT solutions. They will have a background in information science, digital technology or engineering, and be a strong communicator with extensive national and international networks in both the public and private sectors.
