Duties
Primary purpose of the role
In this role, you will perform a range of complex scientific tasks, including environmental dispersion modelling and dose calculations, to estimate risk and potential health impacts to the public, workers and the environment from exposure to ionising radiation. You will work closely with other staff within the Assessment and Advice Section, and liaise with internal and external stakeholders, to ensure that advice provided is based on the latest scientific knowledge and national and international experience.
Key accountabilities

Under limited direction perform diverse tasks and set day-to-day work area priorities related to radiation protection and assessing risks and health impacts from exposure to radiation, with a focus on ionising radiation;

Maintain and develop modelling tools for use in radiological assessments;

Implement best international practice and contribute to the development of Codes and Standards for radiation protection;

Perform roles defined in the ARPANSA Incident Management Plan as a member of the Analysis and Assessment group;

Maintain accurate records of work performed and results obtained, and support the preparation of associated guidance documents and technical reports;

Contribute to ARPANSA’s radiation literature program, which reviews literature related radiation and health that may be of interest to the general public;

Be an active member of ARPANSA’s Talk to a Scientist program, which responds to enquiries from industry, and member of the public.
Eligibility
Job specific capabilities
You must possess a tertiary degree in a branch of the physical sciences, from an Australian educational institution or a comparable qualification. A sound knowledge of physics and environmental modelling is essential. Experience in radiation protection and with geographic information systems, simple programming, and database management would be advantageous.
You will have well developed interpersonal skills and the ability to contribute effectively in a team environment, sometimes in a leading role, together with the ability to liaise with all levels of staff, clients and members of the general public. You will have the ability to consistently perform efficiently and effectively at a high level and the demonstrated ability to make well balanced and informed decisions.
You must hold Australian citizenship or possess permanent residency status leading to citizenship and be prepared to travel interstate from time to time as required. This position is a designated security assessment position which will require you to successfully undertake and maintain a security clearance.
