Duties

The Opportunity
Cyber security is a key priority for governments, businesses and citizens all over the world. As this area of government responsibility continues to increase in importance, the Department is looking to fill the new role of Deputy Secretary, Cyber Security. This will suit a senior executive with the technical, policy and engagement expertise to build on the existing policy framework and drive an ambitious national cyber security agenda.
Reporting to the Secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C), the role is accountable for the delivery of Australia’s Cyber Security Strategy and the development of future cyber policy directions. It has a high public profile, is fast paced and requires extensive engagement with media and senior executives across the private, not for profit and public sectors both domestically and internationally.
As a key member of PM&C’s executive leadership team, the Deputy Secretary will also work collaboratively to provide strategic direction and cohesive leadership across the Department.
Our Ideal Candidate
This role requires technical expertise, the ability to understand and influence operational outcomes and the ability to set and deliver policy direction at a national and international level. To be successful you will require a sophisticated knowledge of cyber security, acquired through extensive professional and management experience in the private and public sectors. You must also have a strategic understanding of PM&C’s role in the national security and intelligence communities and the changing environmental factors impacting Australia’s cyber security policies.
You will be a strong leader with excellent influencing and negotiation skills, with an established record working at a senior level across the private and public sector, and be adept at building relationships in a complex environment. Given the role involves regular engagement with the media, industry bodies and senior private sector representatives, you must have demonstrated skills in communicating to both a technical and general audience and must be adept at engaging with various stakeholders.
You will need to be a resilient, adaptive, forward-looking person with a strong personal drive. You must thrive under pressure and have experience delivering high quality advice and outcomes in a changing and resource limited environment. You will demonstrate sound judgment and risk management skills, and possess a high-level capacity for conceptual and analytic work.
The occupant of this position is considered an Officer under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 and is required to exercise due diligence in complying with their obligations under this Act. They are also required to exercise the appropriate powers, authority, delegations and discretions under the relevant legislation including the Public Service Act 1999 and the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013.
What We Offer

  • A flexible, diverse and inclusive workplace and attractive executive remuneration package including generous employer superannuation contributions.

  • Exciting and fulfilling work at the heart of government with career development and networking opportunities difficult to find elsewhere.

  • The opportunity to work with strong, smart, visionary and experienced leaders who encourage and support you to develop your interests and expertise and achieve your ambitions.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this position you must be an Australian Citizen at the closing date of application.
The occupant must be able to obtain and maintain an NV2PV level security clearance, or hold a current security clearance of an appropriate level.
