The Opportunity
The Vacation Employment Programme is a paid internship occurring in the 2017/18 university summer holidays. If you are an enthusiastic and motivated student and would like to gain valuable and practical hands on experience in Government then we want to hear from you!
Successful applicants will be placed in a policy adviser role within Domestic Policy Group. Using your skills and knowledge from your studies, you will have the opportunity to work on a broad range of tasks, such as developing policy advice, research and analysis.
Positions will be based in Canberra and successful applicants will be responsible for covering all costs related to relocation and accommodation for the duration of the Vacation Employment Programme.
Successful applicants will be placed in one of the following areas:
Economic Policy Branch: Provides advice to the Prime Minister on domestic and international economic developments, on Australia’s economic outlook and on microeconomic policies. The branch also works to integrate domestic and international economic policy priorities, including in areas such as trade and foreign investment, and coordinates and shapes whole-of- government positions on the G20 policy agenda.
Taxation, Financial Sector and Employment Branch: Provides advice to the Prime Minister on taxation and superannuation policy, workplace relations, employment, small business and foreign investment issues. The branch works closely with the Treasury and the Department of Employment to implement the Government’s tax and superannuation package (announced in the 2016-17 Budget) and the delivery of the Youth Employment Package.
Commonwealth-State Relations Branch: The Commonwealth-State Relations Branch is responsible for strategic direction and policy advice on Commonwealth-State relations. This includes: implementation of the Intergovernmental Agreement on Federal Financial Relations (IGA FFR), which governs funding transfers from the Commonwealth to the states and territories (the states); strategy and arrangements for meetings of the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) and its Senior Officials group; and advice on COAG Councils. The branch also advises on horizontal fiscal equalization, housing affordability and performance against COAG priorities.
Office for Women: Works across government to deliver policies and programmes to advance gender equality and improve the lives of Australian women. The Office’s current priorities are: strengthening women’s economic security including women’s workforce participation; supporting more women into leadership positions; and, ensuring that women and their children are safe from violence.
Cities Division: Leads the delivery of the Australian Government’s cities agenda, through the implementation of the Smart Cities Plan. The Division is designing bespoke City Deals in partnership with state/territory and local governments – City Deals outline agreed priorities for the city and identify the initiatives and responsibilities to which the three levels of government commit.

Additionally, the Division is establishing a national performance framework for cities, conducts cities economic analysis and is implementing innovative programs aiming to enhance the use of smart technologies.

Project Office: Provides in-house consultancy capabilities to deliver high quality policy advice to the Prime Minister, the Cabinet and the Secretary. The Office contributes to cross-departmental taskforces as well as working in smaller project teams to tackle complex policy problems across all functions of government. In doing so, the Project Office works collaboratively across all areas in PM&C and the APS, using a unique methodology to drive new and innovative approaches towards policy design and project management.
Industry, Infrastructure and Environment Division: Responsible for providing advice to the Prime Minister and the Executive on issues in the Industry, Innovation, Science, Environment and Energy, Water and Resources and Northern Australia Portfolios. The Division also provides advice on policies relating to Infrastructure, Agriculture, Regional Development, Biosecurity and Population. All areas of the Division work closely with other Departments and areas of PM&C to facilitate policy development and Cabinet processes.
Our Ideal Candidate
We are looking for enthusiastic self-starters that:

  have completed at least their first year of University
  
• 
  have obtained strong results across all or completed subjects (distinction average is preferable)
  
• 
  are studying one of the following disciplines: Economics; Finance; Econometrics; Business; Commerce; Law; Public Policy; Political Science; Development Studies and International Relations.

  are Australian citizens
  
• 
  are willing to undergo character checks and have the ability to obtain and/or maintain a security clearance or waiver at the minimum of Baseline Vetting.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this position you must be an Australian Citizen at the closing date of application.
The occupant must be able to obtain and maintain a Baseline level security clearance, or hold a current security clearance of an appropriate level.

These non-ongoing positions will be offered for a specified term of 10 weeks, with the possibility of extension (agencies should note the maximum initial engagement period is 18 months which can possibly be extended to 3 years).
