Duties

The Australian Border Force (ABF) has been established as the front-line agency of the integrated Department of Immigration and Border Protection, reinforcing the Commonwealth’s focus on the border as a strategic national asset. Charged with significant service and enforcement responsibilities, it brings together the full spectrum of operational border management; facilitation of the movement of people and goods, investigations, compliance, detention and enforcement functions. By applying an intelligence-led model, the ABF works with partner agencies across the border continuum to deliver effective control over who and what has the right to enter or exit, and under what conditions.

The ABF consists of two commands, Operations Group and Support Group. The two Groups work in unison to bring to effect the ABF’s operational priorities.

The ABF is looking to create a merit pool to fill Assistant Commissioner positions, across both Groups, as they become available over the coming 12 months. Successful applicants may be required to relocate to the relevant command.

We are seeking candidates who:

  have a strong law enforcement background who have experience across a range of enforcement and legislative frameworks
  
• 
  are accomplished leaders with a strong track record as a successful executive
  
• 
  have experience in a large operationally complex organisation adept at crafting enterprise wide solutions
  
• 
  can lead a diverse and complex command
  
• 
  display evidence of superior operational conceptual and strategic thinking skills
  
• 
  contribute to policy thinking, forge clear directions and deliver large and complex projects within tight timeframes
  
• 
  display superior communication, negotiating and stakeholder engagement skills.

The successful candidate(s) must be an Australian citizen, successfully undergo the Department’s Employment Suitability Clearance process and have the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance at a minimum level of Negative Vetting 2.
