A = 4.00 B = 3.00 C = 2.00 D = 1.00 F = 0.00

A- = 3.50 B- = 2.50 C- = 1.50 D- = 0.50

Class rank, based on grades, is figured at the end of each semester.
Accelerated and/or AP Courses

Three criteria will determine placement in Accelerated or AP courses:

1. Past class performance in related subjects

2. Attendance (fewer than 10 absences per semester)

3. Standardized test scores (Past performance and attendance take priority over standardized test scores.)
Students enrolled in Accelerated or AP courses may be removed at the quarter or semester if they are not meeting requirements as deemed by the teacher with consultation of administration. Some Accelerated or AP courses require summer reading and/or assignments. If these requirements are not completed by the beginning of the fall semester, the student will be removed from the class.
The following classes are currently designated as accelerated:

Advanced Algebra Physics Acc English IIG & IIL

Intro to Calculus Chemistry II Acc English IIIG & IIIL

Calculus A/B AP American History Acc English IVL

Calculus B/C Acc English IG & IL AP Rhetoric
Designated accelerated classes will be given credit based on the following point scale:

A = 5.00 B = 4.00 C = 3.00 D = 2.00 F = 0.00

A- = 4.50 B- = 3.50 C- = 2.50 D- = 1.50

AP and accelerated courses are given weighted credit. In order to receive weighted credit in an AP course, the student will be required to take the AP exam for that course. If a student does not take the AP exam, he/she will not be given weighted credit in the course. In accelerated courses that don’t have AP exams, students will be required to take an end of the semester exam in order to receive weighted credit.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
The Illinois School Code, Section 27-6, requires all students enrolled in grades 9-12 to engage daily, during the school day, in a course of physical education. Therefore, all students at Herrin High School will be enrolled in one physical education course for each semester of attendance. The school code does allow for the following waivers/exemptions:

Marching Band Exemption

Students in grades 9 through 12 enrolled in Marching Band for both semesters may be exempt from a physical education class. To obtain a physical education exemption for Marching Band, an application must be completed and on file in the guidance office.

Physical Education Exemption

Juniors and Seniors may request exemption without credit from physical education for the following reasons:

  • The student is determined to be participating in interscholastic athletics as certified by the appropriate district personnel during a semester. If the student participates in fall athletics, a fall semester exemption may be requested. For winter or spring athletics, a spring semester exemption may be requested. If a student quits or is removed from an athletic team for any reason by parents, athletic department personnel, administration, disciplinary reasons, etc., he/she will be placed, immediately in an appropriate physical education class (within the first two weeks of a semester, otherwise, the student will have to make up the credit in the following semester). If a student does not complete the second consecutive sport for any reason, the exemption will be revoked and the student must make up the physical education class.

  • The student provides written evidence from an institution of higher education that a specific course not included in existing state or local school minimum graduation standards is required for admission. The guidance counselor must verify that the student's present and proposed schedule will not permit completion of the needed course.

  • The student lacks sufficient course credit in one or more courses required by state statute or local school board policies for graduation. A student who has failed required courses, transferred into the district with deficient credits, or who lacks credits due to other causes will be eligible to apply for this exemption.

Students do not receive a grade for the semester(s) that they are exempt nor do they receive the actual credit in hours. Students who are exempt are merely satisfying the graduation requirement by earning semesters toward the requirement.

Each request for exemption from physical education instruction is verified and eligibility determined on a case-by-case basis by the high school administration and/or guidance personnel.

Physical Education Exemption Applications can be obtained in the Guidance Office.
