Medical/Religious Waiver

The administration may grant a waiver to a student exempting him/her from physical education requirements based on one of the following criteria:




  1. The student presents a physician’s statement indicating that participation in physical education will jeopardize the student’s health and well-being. The physician’s statement will determine the length of time a student is exempt.




  1. The parent or student must be a member of a recognized religious faith that objects to physical education as a part of its official doctrine or creed. Further, the parent and student must show that attending these classes would violate their religious beliefs and not be merely a matter of personal objection.

Students must complete a medical/religious physical education waiver application and attached the appropriate documentation. Waiver applications can be obtained in the guidance office.

Medical Notes
Parents and students are encouraged to limit medical notes to serious illness and injury. If a medical note is given for more than 2 weeks, students will need to substitute an elective class for PE.

DUAL CREDIT

Dual credit is an opportunity for high school juniors and seniors who are capable of meeting an increased challenge to earn free college credit through selected high school courses.



  1. Both high school and college credit is earned for dual credit courses.

  2. Dual credit classes may be taught at the high school by a qualified teacher (who is also a John A. Logan College faculty member).

  3. The high school determines whether a college course is offered for concurrent high school and college credit, according to the school’s policies and practices of their district.

DUAL ENROLLMENT

High school juniors and seniors may also enroll in a college level course offered on the College’s main campus, at the DuQuoin and West Frankfort Extension Centers, on–line, and at other approved College sites.



  1. Students earn college credit exclusively. High school credit is not usually awarded.

  2. The College Catalog lists all the courses offered at John A. Logan College.

  3. The Class Schedule identifies the days of the week and the times each class is offered during a particular semester.

  4. Students may take day, evening, or on-line classes as approved by their high school. On-line classes are listed separately in the on-line section of the class schedule.

Registration Deadlines

High school students are subject to the registration deadlines for regular college courses and may not enroll in a course after the course closes. Please pay particular attention to the “last day to register.”



Admissions Requirements:

Admission is ordinarily restricted to students in their junior and senior years of high school. Additionally, students accepted for enrollment in college–level courses must have the following:



  • Appropriate academic qualifications as determined by their high school; and

  • High level of motivation and adequate time to devote to studying a college-level course

Students must also

  1. Make course selections in consultation with their high school guidance counselor and/or principal, or parent administrator if home schooled.

  2. Take the College’s entrance exam (Asset) or provide their ACT test scores and score appropriately.

  3. Complete all course prerequisites as required by the College and any additional requirements set by their high school.

  4. Complete a Dual Credit registration form or Dual Enrollment registration form.

What is Not Covered

Some courses are not eligible through the Dual Credit or Dual Enrollment Program. These include the following:



  • Summer courses

  • Continuing Education courses

  • Developmental courses (i.e. ENG 050, ENG 052, ENG 053, ENG 090, ENG 099, MAT 051, MAT 052, MAT 052H, MAT 061, MAT 062H, and MAT 099)


On–Line Classes

John A. Logan College offers online instruction through Blackboard and Moodle – online computer software tools.

To learn about Blackboard or Moodle and how to navigate through an on-line course, students must complete an online orientation (ORI 110). You will learn about Blackboard and Moodle; how to create an account; how to log in to your class(es); requirements for e–mail accounts; and procedures for downloading, uploading, and communicating with your instructor and fellow students. You will also learn what to do and who to contact if you experience technical problems while taking an online class.

Students cannot begin an on–line course until they have completed the Blackboard or Moodle orientation.



Tuition and Fees

Currently, the College waives the tuition and fees for dual credit courses taught at the high school. Students taking classes at JALC or its extension programs may have course fees assessed. Students must have the permission of their district high school to participate in the dual credit or dual enrollment programs. Enrollment forms and a list of the dual credit courses approved by your high school are available through your high school guidance office. Dual enrollment classes have tuition waived but will require payment of fees if the course has a fee.



Meeting with a Campus Advisor

After meeting with a high school guidance counselor, students are encouraged to arrange an appointment to meet with the Dual Credit Director at the College. The Director can provide valuable insight to careers, programs offered at the College, and assist students interested in pursuing a baccalaureate degree after attending John A. Logan College. Student Login

Students may check their schedules and view their transcripts through the College’s WebLink. The student I.D. is your social security number (or student ID #). The password is your birth day and year (do not include the month). For example, if your birthdate is November 3, 1989, enter 03/89.



Vol Text

VolText is the College’s campus alert notification system that sends text messages to cell phones. Students can stay informed of campus events, closings, and emergencies by signing up, online or through admissions.

Sophomore Dual Credit and Dual Enrollment Criteria
Generally, dual credit and dual enrollment is for high school junior and seniors. John A. Logan College recognizes that, in some instances, sophomores may be academically prepared for college course work.
The College will consider approving sophomores for dual credit and/or dual enrollment on an individual basis provided the student can clearly demonstrate they meet all of the following criteria:
1. Appropriate academic qualifications

2. High level of motivation

3. Adequate time to devote to studying a college‐level course
Students requesting special consideration under this policy must submit the following documentation (with their enrollment form) for consideration at least six weeks prior to the beginning of the semester:
1. Dual Credit/Dual Enrollment form

2. Two letters of reference from academic sources stating how the sophomore 1) meets the appropriate academic qualifications and 2) has the high level of motivation and maturation required for college course work (specific examples must be included).

3. One to two page student essay (double spaced) stating how you meet these guidelines (specific examples must be cited).

4. If the request is approved, sophomores must schedule their courses through an academic advisor at the College. The advisor will confirm the student has taken their placement tests and submitted their transcripts.

Principal or Superintendent
It is understood that all the stakeholders (student, parents, guidance counselors, principal or superintendent, and academic references) agree, without hesitation, that the student is ready to take on the challenge of college coursework. Further, they understand the College withdrawal policies apply to high school students.
Sophomores who satisfactorily complete a college level course with a grade of “C” or better in the fall semester will be approved to enroll in spring semester courses. They must submit a new dual credit/dual enrollment form for spring semester and it must be approved by all the stakeholders listed above. They will not be required to re‐submit their letters of reference or essay.
