Criteria for Accelerated Class Recommendation:
To be eligible to be recommended for Advanced Language Art classes, a student must earn, during the preceding year, an “A” or “B” in Accelerated English G or Accelerated English L or an “A” in English G or

English L.


Selection of students for both Advanced English and AP English will follow Language Arts Department guidelines and procedures.

English I, Grammar/Composition .5 Credit 9

Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation


This one-semester writing intensive college-prep course will offer instruction and practice in the following areas: spelling; grammar; vocabulary; sentence, paragraph and theme composition; study skills; preparation for college entrance testing; and employability skills. Through exercises and paragraph construction, the course will stress the parts of speech, the parts of the sentence, phrases and clauses, language usage, and sentence structure. A minimum of two book reports is required to pass the course. *Approved NCAA core course
Accelerated English I, Grammar/Composition .5 Credit 9

Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation


This one-semester writing intensive course will be available to students who meet the requirements for recommendation. This will offer a more complex curriculum than English IG with an increased emphasis on the following:

a) vocabulary development through word study and reading and b) the improvement of writing skills through expository and creative writing. The curriculum will also include independent reading, responsive and persuasive writing, and preparation for college testing. A minimum of four book reports is required to pass the course. *Approved NCAA core course


English I, Literature .5 Credit 9

Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation


This one-semester, college-prep course will introduce the freshman to the various types of literature - short story, novel, drama, biography, essay, poetry, etc. Through guided reading, the freshman will be introduced to major literary works of the past and present. This course will also offer instruction and practice in reading, study skills, note taking, comprehension, vocabulary, multi-paragraph essay composition, and preparation for college testing. *Approved NCAA core course
Accelerated English I, Literature .5 Credit 9

Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation


This one-semester class will be available to students who meet the requirements for recommendation. While this course will initially offer the same curriculum as English IL, it will offer a greater depth of study in literary techniques, a more extensive vocabulary study, more varied reading assignments, multi-paragraph compositions based on literary analysis, and responsive writing. *Approved NCAA core course
Speech I .5 Credit 9-10

No Prerequisite


The following basic areas are stressed: a theory of communication and its importance, critical listening, researching, organizing and outlining material, and delivering the speech. Some speeches will focus on research, while others will focus on creativity. In order to receive a passing grade, students must complete all speeches, as well as assigned coursework. *Approved NCAA core course
English II, Grammar/Composition .5 Credit 10

Prerequisite: English IG


This one-semester writing intensive college-prep course will offer instruction and practice in spelling, grammar, vocabulary, paragraph and theme composition, college entrance testing, study skills, and employability skills. Grammar fundamentals, punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, specific methods of development, and outlining will be stressed in paragraph and theme construction. A minimum of two book reports is required to pass the course. *Approved NCAA core course
Accelerated English II, Grammar/Composition .5 Credit 10

Prerequisite: Accelerated English IG or grade of "A" in English IG


This one-semester writing intensive course will be available to students who meet the requirements for recommendation. This accelerated college preparation course includes spelling instruction, comprehensive grammar study, vocabulary development, and writing exercises stressing syntax and paragraph construction. The curriculum also includes an independent reading unit, responsive and persuasive writing activities, and preparation for college testing. Book reviews and author biographies are also required to pass the course. *Approved NCAA core course


English II, Literature .5 Credit 10

Prerequisite: English IL


This one-semester, college-prep course will aim toward a better understanding of all types of literature. Short stories, novels, poetry, and the Shakespearean play Julius Caesar will constitute a major portion of the course.

Instruction and practice in the development of reading, study skills, note taking, comprehension, vocabulary, composition skills, and college entrance testing will also be provided. *Approved NCAA core course


Accelerated English II, Literature .5 Credit 10

Prerequisite: Accelerated English IL or grade of "A" in English IL


This one-semester course will be available to students who meet the requirements for recommendation. This accelerated college preparation course will offer the same core curriculum as English IIL. It will place a greater emphasis on literary techniques and figurative interpretation of the different literary genre. The curriculum will also include extensive study in drama and contemporary poetry and creative writing. Book reviews and author biographies are also required. *Approved NCAA core course
English III, Grammar/Composition .5 Credit 11

Prerequisite: English IIG


This one-semester writing intensive college-prep course is designed for the student who seeks a third year of college-prep instruction in language arts skills. The primary emphasis of this course will be on the construction of single and multi-paragraph compositions, which discuss and/or analyze assigned reading material or persuasive response to prompts. A grammar review, vocabulary and spelling development, independent reading assignments, a research paper, employability skills, and an orientation to college entrance examinations will also be included in the curriculum of this course. Two book reports and one research paper will be assigned this semester. Completion of such papers is a course requirement. Failure to complete these assigned papers will result in a failing grade in the class. *Approved NCAA core course
Accelerated English III, Grammar/Composition .5 Credit 11

Prerequisite: Accelerated English IIG or grade of "A" in English IIG


This one-semester writing intensive course will be available to students who meet the requirements for recommendation. The curriculum of this accelerated college prep course will primarily emphasize construction of single and multi-paragraph compositions based on in-depth, well-researched literary analyses as well as persuasive response to prompts. The curriculum will also include a grammar review, vocabulary and spelling development, independent reading assignments, a research paper, and an orientation to college entrance examinations. *Approved NCAA core course
English III, Literature .5 Credit 11

Prerequisite: English IIL


This one-semester course is designed for students whose reading skills and interests prompt them to seek a college-prep study of major literary works by American writers. The curriculum of this course presents the major literary movements in chronological order: Colonial; Romantic; Transcendental; Dissenter; Civil War; Western; Realism; early 20th Century writings of Hemingway, Steinbeck, Faulkner, and Fitzgerald; and contemporary literature. This course will also offer instruction and practice in reading-study-note taking skills, comprehension, vocabulary, composition, and preparation for college entrance examinations. *Approved NCAA core course
Accelerated English III, Literature .5 Credit 11

Prerequisite: Accelerated English IIL or Grade of "A" in English IIL


This one-semester class will be available to students who meet the requirements for recommendation. This course will offer the same core curriculum as English IIIL; however, it will place greater emphasis on literary analysis and offer an extensive overview of American literature, and responsive writing. *Approved NCAA core course


English IV, Grammar/Composition .5 Credit 12

Prerequisite: English IIIG or Accelerated English IIIG


This one-semester writing intensive course is designed for the student who seeks a fourth level of college-prep instruction in language arts skills. The curriculum will include a) grammar, spelling, and vocabulary instruction and b) a college-prep composition program, including research papers. At least one research paper will be assigned per quarter. Completion of all research papers is a course requirement. Failure to complete any assigned research paper will result in a failing grade in the class. *Approved NCAA core course
English IV, Literature .5 Credit 12

Prerequisite: Accelerated English IIIL or grade of “C” or above in English IIIL


Highly recommended for the college-bound, this course presents an overview of the major British literary periods: Anglo-Saxon, Medieval, Elizabethan, Jacobean, Puritan, Restoration, 18th Century, Romantic, Victorian, and 20th Century. *Approved NCAA core course
Accelerated English IV, British Literature .5 Credit 12

Prerequisite: Accelerated English IIIL or grade of "A" in English IIIL


This one-semester course will be available to students who meet the requirements for recommendation. This course will offer the same core curriculum as English IV Literature. In addition, it will include an extensive survey of English literature, critical literary analysis, literary terminology, and research essays. This course is designed to prepare students for the Advanced Placement exam in Literature, administered by the College Board for a fee. *Approved NCAA core course
AP Rhetoric .5 Credit 12

Prerequisite: Accelerated English IIIG or grade of "A" in English IIIG


This one-semester writing intensive course will be available to students who meet the requirements for recommendation. This accelerated, college-prep course will offer instruction and practice of expository and argumentative writing, the different methods of paragraph development and arrangement, literary analysis, the research paper, persuasive writing, and extemporaneous writing. This course is also designed to prepare students for the Advanced Placement Examination in English, a proficiency exam administered by the College Board for a fee. *Approved NCAA core course
Young Adult Literature .5 Credit 9-12

No Prerequisite


Students will read and analyze five novels and one novel-length piece of nonfiction in this course. This literature deals with the vast potential and possible problems of teenagers' lives. In addition to traditional quizzes and tests, a component of the student's grade will be determined by Socratic Seminars, student-directed discussions about the texts. It is considered a writing intensive class
Creative Writing .5 Credit 10-12

Prerequisite: Sophomores may register with the consent of instructor only


Creative writing offers experiences that draw from a student's imaginative and creative abilities. The course presents a wide range of writing opportunities, allowing individual choice and individual development. Students will experiment with different types of writing -- short stories, poetry, essays, and dramas. It is considered a writing intensive class. *Approved NCAA core course
Drama .5 Credit 10-12

Prerequisite: Speech I, with a suggested “B” average; if lower than a “B” average must have consent of instructor.


This one-semester course will introduce students to all aspects of theatre. Some subjects students will study are theatre history, pantomime, improvisation, movement, and vocal interpretation. Students will also read, interpret, analyze , and recreate scenes from Euirpides’ Medea, Shakespeare’s The Tempest, Lawrence and Lee’s Inherit the Wind, Rose’s Twelve Angry Men, and Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire. Drama is a performance based class. In order to receive a passing grade, students must complete all performances, as well as assigned coursework. Approved NCAA core course
Journalism .5 Credit 10-12

Prerequisite: A grade of “B” or higher in previous year’s grammar class and a recommendation of previous year’s grammar instructor. Recommendations can be picked up from the journalism instructor.


Students will receive instruction in the basics of news writing, interviewing, feature writing, and other journalism-related material. JOURNALISM IS CONSIDERED A WRITING INTENSIVE CLASS. Newspaper staff members are strongly urged to take this course, although it is open to any students in grades 10, 11, and 12 who meet the prerequisite and are interested in writing in general or newspaper writing in particular.

Accelerated Speech/Forensics .5 Credit 10-12

Prerequisite: Suggested “A” or “B” in Speech I; Consent of instructor


This course is designed to improve a student's skill in speech planning, writing, and delivery through the study of communication theory. Interpretation of poetry, prose, and drama will be introduced, as well as debate techniques and media communication. Areas to be stressed: organization and clarity in the speaking situation and a strong, confident performance attitude. *Approved NCAA core course
Debate .5 Credit 11-12

Prerequisite: Juniors and Seniors only plus consent of instructor; suggested "A" or "B" in Speech and at least a “C” in English.


This course is designed to improve a student's research skills and skills in argumentation. Informal and formal class debates on current problems will be held. *Approved NCAA core course
Introduction to William Shakespeare .5 Credit 11-12

Prerequisite: Offered to Juniors and Seniors; Sophomores may take course with consent of instructor.
The aim of this one-semester, college-prep course is to expand on a student’s current knowledge of Shakespeare and for him or her to leave the class with a better understanding and more of an appreciation of all things Shakespeare. In addition to studying the Elizabethan era and the Globe Theatre, students will read, interpret, and analyze his sonnets and five of his plays (two tragedies, two comedies, one history).

Technical Writing .5 Credit 12

Prerequisite: None
This semester-long writing intensive class is for seniors. This course focuses on problem/solutions analysis, technical memoranda, letters, formal reports, writing instructions, resumes, proposals, and other forms of writing that are used by both technical and non-technical workers. It will also teach students to speak effectively to clients, peers, business audiences, and to work collaboratively in a team setting. Students will gain the knowledge base and skills to communicate effectively and efficiently on paper. *Approved NCAA core course
